The CD features film music composed and in most of the recordings performed by Theodosii Spassov, the capacities of whose kaval are indeed beyond the frontier. A chance meeting thousands of kilometers away from Bulgaria provoked this abundance of sounds and ideas, this musical "conspiracy" between two musicians belonging to two different generations yet equally sharing their love for the traditional Bulgarian folk music. This meeting gave birth to the programme entitled Nа Trapeza.
Nikola Iliev belongs to that generation of musicians who grew up with the music of the wedding orchestras. Together with this, he received classical music education, first at the Plovdiv School of Music and after that, at the State Academy of Music in Sofia as pupil of Prof. Petko Radev (a soloist of long standing in the Milan La Scala and the Sofia Philharmonic). Theodosii Spassov, on the other hand, graduated from the School of Folk Singing in Kotel and from the Academy for Music and Dance Arts in Plovdiv. The two performers are representatives of two different systems of education and schools of playing! And while Nikola Iliev introduces in traditional music the classical sound-production (the clarinetists from the older generation play with an open tone, reminiscent of the bagpipe and the zurna) and elements from the European form-building, Theodosii Spassov follows the same process, yet in the reverse direction - from the pure, unsophisticated folk music to jazz, pop music and even to classical musical forms.
Na Trapeza is a unique professional achievement because of the spontaneity of the idea and its practical realization, the incredible synchrony in the two performers' musical ideas and the brilliant improvisations. The uniqueness of the release lies in the fact that the musicians have never rehearsed or discussed the music they perform. The recorded melodies date as far back as their childhood although they have never played together. Moreover, the traditional accompanying band has also been excluded. The two players take turns in the performance of the leading melody and harmony
Na Trapeza is like a reunion between friends, who have not seen each other for a long time and have too many things to share!

A legend from Kyustendil region has it: a poor woman had naughty and always hungry children. She got tired of working for the daily bread, which was never enough for her children; she got tired of being kept responsible for their mischief and cursed them. She herself turned into a welkya (night tawny owl). But then her anger receded and she keeps looking for her children to the present day.
This legend has inspired Theodosii Spassov to write his highly impressive piece Welkya. The mythical, the invisible, the impossible, the unexpected turns into a sound reality. And it seems this is exactly that makes Theodosii Spassov unique. Even in the pronouncedly folk pieces his jokes and musical witticisms surprise and amaze with their rich imagination and "jumps" from one genre to another. The artist feels pleasure to "juggle" with them, to "play" with his kaval. And thus everyone is involved in this game, both the musicians and the listeners!

Performed by: Theodosii Spassov (kaval, vocals, bagpipe), Yanka Rupkina (vocals), Boika Velkova (recitatives), Georgi Petrov (gadulka), Valentin Yankov (tamboura), Georgi Donchev (bass), Stoyan Yankulov (percussions)

Philip Koutev's work was in constant progress and this CD is an illustration of the almost half-a-century folk-musical process. Starting with Koutev's famous Polegnala e Tudora (Tudora Lay Down), the singers perform several of his songs. The songs and instrumental pieces by Georgi Genov, Georgi Andreev and Hristofor Radanov show us the musical idiom of the younger generation, while Theodosii Spassov's works are indicative of a musician's non-traditional approach to the different genres. The programme ends with Dva guluba (Two Pigeons) by Kosta Kolev, a renowned master of folk arrangements. And to complete the picture, there are three sisters from the Pirin Mountains and some Shoppe singers, who take us back to the original sources of this fascinating music.

Elena Kouteva, chief artistic director
Georgi Genov, choir-master
Georgi Andreev, conductor of the orchestra

Soloists: Sorina Bogomilova, Stoyanka Dosseva, Nikolina Raikova, Todorka Momcheva, Neli Andreeva, Sofia Ilieva, the Bisserov Sisters, Yordan Georgiev (tupan). Nedyalko Nedyalkov (kaval), Peyo Peev (gadulka), Nikola Nikolov (gaida), Lyudmila Radkova, Daniela Radkova, Monika Stoyanova, Antoaneta Zareva, Reni Pavlova, Kouna Zhelyazkova, Nikolina Skorcheva, Theodosii Spassov (kaval), Dimiter Todorov (gaida)

PLETENITSA - PEYO PEEV, gadulka

PLETENITSA - PEYO PEEV, gadulka
ID: GD328
Disk: 1
Type: CD
Kolekce: TraditionalPodkolekce: Folk Music

For centuries the gadulka has been among the most favourite instruments in Bulgaria. While in the past it was used only in some folk regions, today it is widely popular throughout the country. Since the middle of the 20th century, it has been invariably included in the folk music orchestras in all regions of Bulgaria. This brought about a change in the musical concept of the folk musicians. They began to unite melodies and techniques characteristic for various folk regions or other genres. They managed to prove that even though the gadulka is a more primitive instrument, it can still compete technically with the classical string instruments.
Peyo Peeev is among the most renowned young gadulka players. Born and brought up in the heart of Trakia (Southern Bulgaria), the musician’s first interest in music was connected with the children’s ensemble Zagorche, then he studied at the Philip Koutev Secondary School of Music in the town of Kotel (1989-1994) and the Academy of Music, Dance and Fine Arts in Plovdiv (1994-1998). His professional career began in the Philip Koutev State Ensemble of Folk Songs and Dances. After that he participated in the world-famous dance show Riverdance (1999-2000) and since 2000 he has been soloist in the Bulgarian National Radio Folk Music Orchestra. Peyo Peev has won twice the “Golden gadulka” prize named after the famous gadulka player Yanko Petrov (1996 and 1997), he participated in the world tour of the Mystery of Bulgarian Voices Choir in Hong Kong (1997) and is one of the founders of Academica formation (1998).
He gives concerts actively and participates in different projects with the world-famous musician Theodosii Spassov and the virtuoso players Petar Ralchev, Stoyan Yankulov, etc. These musicians also participate in the present release. Peyo Peev has also performed with different groups throughout Europe, the USA, Japan, and has made a lot of recordings.
The ten pieces included in this release are unique in their style and characterise his musical concept and creative imagination. They are real jewels, which skilfully combine both the traditional and contemporary approach.
