Male choir of the Representation Church of the Laura of the Holy Trinity and St.Sergius in Moscow. Precentor Vladimir Gorbik
This is a recording of Matins of Great Friday performed by the male choir of the Representation Church of the Laura of the Holy Trinity and St.Sergius in Moscow. This service is celebrated in the evening of Great Thursday. You are familiar with it through «The Office of the Passions of the Lord» recorded by the monastic choir of Valaam Monastery. Lovers of church singing are offered a wonderful opportunity to compare these recordings and make certain that though the manner of performance differs, they are equally beautiful.
The performance is so full of feeling that those who cannot be in the church on Great Thursday will feel themselves present.
Colour booklet (8 pages) in Russian and English with a short narration on the service and the choir. |

Kolektion: Sacred MusicSubkolektion: Choir 2 CD, color booklet (52 pages) in Russian and in English with a narration on the history of the akathist and the chants as well as with the full text of the Praise to the Most Holy Mother of God.
This akathist is like a wreath interlaced with the most beautiful laudations for the Queen of Heaven. The exultant «O Victorious Leader…» was heard for the first time in 626 when Constantinople was saved from pagan siege by the intercession of the Mother of God. As a token of their gratitude for the miraculous escape the faithful sang a hymn with an exclamation «Rejoice!» all night long, and Constantinople patriarch Sergius composed this akathist.
Along with the Common chants the CD includes original authors" compositions performed by the soloists with choir («O Mother worthy of all praise», «O Victorious Leader» in various chants, Canon to the Mother of God, music of irmoses by P. Chesnokov; music of troparions by A.Arkhangelsky). |

Kolektion: Sacred MusicSubkolektion: Choir 1 CD, color booklet (44 pages) in Russian and in English with a narration on the history of the akathist and with the full text of the Praise to the Most Holy Mother of God.
This marvelous akathist was composed in the terrible times of Russian history. In 1917, on the 2 of March Emperor Nicholas II abdicated the throne, but that very day there happened an event that made many people recover their spirit. In the village of Kolomenskoe near Moscow a new icon of the Mother of God appeared, known as the «Derzhavnaya» icon. The Queen of heaven was depicted as an earthly queen there. In the years of cruel persecutions of the Church the icon didn’t cease to pour out the miraculous healings. Nowadays it still strengthens and consoles the believers, being one of the most loved and worshiped icons of the Mother of God.
St. Patriarch Tikhon took part in composing the Divine service and the akathist of Theotokos - the Queen and Protectress. The akathist is performed with reverence by the Moscow Churches’ Choir of Singers (Precentor Anatoly Kuleshov) in various chants and melodies, from classical Greek chant to severe monastic melody of the Sarov Hermitage.
