Jacques Martin Hotteterre’s compositions are among the most substantial works of French chamber music from the early 18th Century. The two volumes of Pieces pour la flûte-traversiere have particular significance within his wide-ranging œuvre, much of which reveals didactic intent. Never before had a musical language of such expressiveness and sublime intimacy been realised in composition for a wind instrument. Aside from this multifaceted suites, the Airs et brunettes -with a bounty of original ornamentation- and the Sonates en trio -based on Arcangelo Corelli’s triosonatas- provide a particularly good impression of Hotteterre’s stylistic diversity. Michael Form has chosen the recorder for the interpretation of Hotteterres flute music. Alternative arrangements were of course a welcome means of ensuring a wider dissemination of musical works - and a common practice among composers of the time. For the majority of the suites which descend below the range of the treble recorder in f’, Michael Form decide to use a flûte de voix in d’ -with his warm timbre this instrument gives the pieces a special charm. Contenu: Les compositions de Jacques Hotteterre font partie des plus riches œuvres de musique de chambre française des premières décennies du 18ème siècle. Au sein de son œuvre variée, les deux tomes des Pièces pour la flûte traversière tiennent une place à part, également sous des aspects didactiques. Jamais auparavant, une langue sonore aussi expressive, aussi sublime de ferveur, ne fut inventée pour un instrument à vent. Au-delà de cettes suites aux nombreuses facettes, les Airs et brunettes (croulant sous les ornements originaux) ainsi que les Sonates en trio (prenant appui sur les sonates en trio d’Arcangelo Corelli) offrent une bonne impression de la diversité stylistique de Hotteterre. Pour interpreter cette musique Michael Form a choisi la flûte à bec. Pour les suites qui descendent en-dessous du registre de la flûte à bec alto en fa’ - presque toutes -, Michael Form a décidé d’utiliser une flûte de voix en ré’. Avec son doux timbre cet instrument donne la musique une charme exeptionelle. |

Unter den Herzögen von Valois wurde Burgund im 15. Jahrhundert zu einer der mächtigsten politischen Kräfte Westeuropas und seine Hauptstadt Dijon ein Zentrum der Musik. Was hier erklang, war so innovativ und eigenständig, dass man heute von einer »Burgundischen Schule« spricht. Gleichwohl kamen die Musiker der Burgundischen Hofkapelle aus allen Himmelsrichtungen - unter ihnen Guillaume Du Fay, einer der größten Meister nicht nur seiner Zeit, sondern der Musik generell. Geehrt für seine Melodien von kunstvoller Anmut, begabt mit einem einzigartigen Instinkt für die harmonische Balance der musikalischen Phrasen, galt er als jemand, der die Sphären der Vollkommenheit der musikalischen Kunst seiner Zeit erreichte.
Die drei "Triste Plaisir"-Musiker haben sich eigens zusammengefunden für dieses Repertoire voll von Raffinesse, großzügiger Gesanglichkeit und jener süßen Melancholie, welche den Meisterwerken der spätmittelalterlichen Liedkunst eigentümlich ist. Entgegen der gängigen Praxis versuchen sie mit minimalster Besetzung - nur Stimme und zwei Streichinstrumente - der Intimität dieser Kleinodien gerecht zu werden. |

Mit »Jardin de Plaisance« ist die erste CD der schola cantorum basiliensis edition bei Raumklang erschienen. In dieser Reihe werden viel versprechende junge Musiker und Ensemble vorgestellt, die an der Schola Cantorum Basiliensis ihre Ausbildung erhalten haben. Gleichzeitig werden spannende Programme abseits der Hauptstraßen der Alten Musik repräsentiert. Die Musiker-Generation nach Guillaume Dufay und Gilles Binchois begann um 1450 mit neuen Kompositionstechniken zu experimentieren, die zu einem sehr fortschrittlichen und eigenständigen Repertoire von weltlichen Liedern führten. Gesammelt und überliefert wurden diese Werke nach 1460 in mehreren Handschriften aus Kreisen des französischen Hochadels. Das junge Basler Ensemble La Morra präsentiert eine Anthologie dieser höchst verfeinerten Kunst instrumentalen und vokalen Musizierens in der Frische und Unmittelbarkeit eines »Gartens der Freude«. Early on Nuremberg had established itself as a centre of book printing. The first printing-offices that occupied themselves seriously with the printing of music, however, were those of Hieronymus Formschneider and Johannes Petreius. Most of the pieces on this recording are taken from these collections of three-part music. They contain international repertoire, including old masterworks such as Caecox and Tandernaken by Alexander Agricola, but also arrangements of German folk songs and ballads, as well as French compositions and more recent Italian forms. |

Subcollection: Chamber EnsembleThirty largely original instruments in the hands of music-making angels in Freiberg Cathedral are unique evidence of Saxon musical-instrument-making in the sixteenth century. Copies were made of the angels’ instruments - cornetts, trombones, shawms, triangle, tambourine, harps, citterns, violins and lutes - during the course of a research project. Their sound can be rediscovered on this CD of late-Renaissance instrumental and vocal works from Saxony. Musica Freybergensis is a hand-picked group of musicians chosen by Music Instrument Museum of Leipzig University and Raumklang for the purpose of practical research into the sound of the Freiberg instruments. Before making this recording a number of concerts were presented over the period of a year, including one in Freiberg Cathedral, giving the musicians time to break in the instruments, to become accustomed to them, and to discover their possibilities. |

Auf dem Programm dieser „Fiesta Española“ ergänzen sich in temperamentvoller Anmut frühbarocke Stücke - wie das eingängige „Ojos pues me desdeñais“ von José Marin (gesungen von Mercedes Hernandéz) - mit modernen Flamencokompositionen. Besonders spannend wird die Aufnahme durch das hörbare Tanzen von Elva La Guardia - Palmas, Kastagnetten und der kraftvolle Rhythmus ihrer Füße begleiten nicht nur die Flamencostücke, sondern auch einige der frühbarocken Kompositionen. So wird bspw. das Instrumentalstück »Jácaras« von Gaspar Sanz mit dem Flamencorhythmus der bulerias unterlegt, am Ende steigert es sich bis zu den markanten zapateados der Tänzerin. Aus diesen zahlreichen Begegnungen entstehen ungewohnte und mitreißende Momente. Eine wahrhaftige „Fiesta española“, auf der Laute und Barockgitarre gemeinsam mit Flamencogitarre und Cajon erklingen und auf der sich frühbarocke Melodien mit dem Klagegesang des Flamenco verbinden.

Selections from The Song Book of Anna von Köln
This collection of devotional songs in Latin and the vernacular (indeed, in several medieval dialects) was compiled about 1500 in Cologne, an example of devotio moderna, the late-medieval movement to adopt a lifestyle midway between secular society and the religious orders. The title of the disc, “the rose of Jericho,” refers to a Macaronic song in low German and Latin honoring the Blessed Virgin, who was invariably venerated while her Son was worshipped. A few of these songs have appeared in collections of the LP era. Konrad Ruhland’s group sang “Jure plaudant omnia,” included here. Several other songs recorded in that era are not duplicated here, but this seems to be the first focused collection drawn from this source.
Late-medieval collections of anonymous vocal music of this type have been largely overlooked in music history courses and texts in favor of identifiable composers. Reinhard Strohm, in The Rise of European Music, 1380-1500 (Cambridge, 1993), made a major breakthrough in devoting the entire Part 3 of his four-part book to the subject. The Songbook of Anna of Cologne (D-B 8o 280) has been edited by Salmen and Koepp (Schwann, 1954), so it should be accessible at least to performers and scholars. Even so, Strohm barely mentions the collection in a paragraph devoted to 15th-century compilations of this type, next to the slightly earlier Wienhäuser Liederbuch, which was given a whole disc on a Psallite LP of 1976.
The 16 songs from this source that are recorded here make a delightful program. All are sung by the women’s group of 11 singers and five players, while four instrumental selections from the Glogauer and Locheimer songbooks are inserted at intervals. Some of the songs are sung solo, and some are lightly accompanied on period instruments. The acoustics of the chapel cast a warm glow around the voices. Anonymity is a burden, as evident from the attention devoted to composers (Perotinus) and works (the “Farewell” symphony of Haydn) not so disabled. Anyone who comes across this disc is going to be entranced by the unexpected pleasure that it affords. Give it a chance and you’ll turn back to it again and again. The last time I was so unexpectedly delighted was on hearing “Ninna Nanna” by Montserrat Figueras (26:6). That’s the kind of disc it is.
