This recital of new pieces for clarinet and basset clarinet, includes works by Mark-Anthony Turnage, Emily Howard, Gary Carpenter, Patrick Nunn, Kenneth Hesketh along with Mark Simpson’s Lov(escape).
Mark Simpson writes ... When I was asked to perform Mozart’s Clarinet Concerto in 2008 with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, it was expected that I would play the work on a modern-day basset clarinet. Having purchased one and used it in performance, I wasn’t happy to leave it sat idly gathering dust in its case. In my eyes the basset clarinet is an exciting enhancement of the standard soprano clarinet, and its logical development: its lower range gives it a subtler and richer sonority than the soprano clarinet.
The works on this disc are a culmination of five years of actively working with and commissioning composers. My aim during this period was to develop the repertoire for the basset clarinet, and also provide a platform for composers in whose work I was interested and believed in; I was able to develop these relationships through the opportunities that followed my winning BBC Young Musician of the Year in 2006. |

Charles Mingus once said “Making the simple complicated is
commonplace; making the complicated simple, that’s creativity”. This tends to describe our philosophy for this CD. The majority of the original compositions on this CD are based on the chord changes from well known works taken from the classical repertoire. One thing I can assure you is that this CD is nothing like the old “Bach meets Jazz” idea. For these pieces we applied the same concept used by jazz musicians during the Be Bop era where new melodies were applied to existing chord progressions. The major difference is that instead of sourcing our chord changes from songs out of the American songbook tradition we opted to explore the European classical music tradition for our harmony. During the preparation for this recording we had a great time playing with the endless possibilities provided us by the old masters and enjoyed looking for simple ways to transpose these rich harmonies into the language of jazz.
The Andrew Read Trio
The trio's first CD "Live in de Tor" and the follow up "The Andrew Read Trio - A2B" were received well by both the public and the press. The CD "Winter of my Dreams" featuring guest vocalist Lils Mackintosh and Sax player Wouter Kiers was a success generating substantial international sales. In 2009 The Andrew Read Trio signed with the Dutch label Aliud Records. The first release under this new contract is due for release December 2010. |

Penguin Cafe is a continuation by Arthur Jeffes of the ideas and music that his father, Simon Jeffes the English composer and musician, created with the enduring and ever-evolving concept of the Penguin Cafe Orchestra.
During the last two years they've been touring and playing the original music and adding a few new pieces as they emerged. This record is a collection of some of these pieces.
13 years after Simon Jeffes' death, his son, Arthur, has started playing his music again. Under the name Penguin Cafe, Arthur - along with a new group of musicians - is re-visiting his father's music and starting a new chapter in the story of this unique and strange creative world. Their sound is at once familiar and new, combining acoustic power and a beguiling, feisty charm.
The Penguin Cafe’s first year, 2009, saw them playing the Acoustic stage at Glastonbury, the main stages at Big Chill and Bestival, and selling out the Snape Prom among many other adventures. In 2010 one major highlight was playing at the Albert Hall in their own BBC Late Night Prom.
Over these first two years Arthur has been writing new material to compliment and respond to the old. A love-letter to the original music, ‘A Matter Of Life...’ is the result of this endeavour and is one of the most startling, beautiful and extraordinary records of the year. |

Released in April 2011, this re-mastered and re-packaged edition of the 1994 Penguin Cafe Orchestra album Union Cafe is now available on the new Penguin Cafe Label along with re-mastered editions of both Concert Program (PCO, 1995) and Piano Music (by Simon Jeffes, posthumous).
This record retains the intimacy and charm of all previous works, featuring a recording of the electric Aeolian harp on Cadbury Hill, Somerset, and a piece dedicated to the memory of John Cage recorded at the Real World recording week in 1992.
This is the re-mastered version of the original 1993 release.

Rob Keeley was born in Bridgend in 1960. He studied with Oliver Knussen at the Royal College of Music, Magdalen College Oxford under Bernard Rose, and later with Robert Saxton.
As a pianist Keeley has premiered works by, among others, Harrison Birtwistle, Michael Finnissy, Jonathan Cole, Richard Emsley and Nicola Moro.
He is currently Senior Lecturer in Composition at King's College, London.
Keeley's music is jazz tinged with elements of Satie and Poulenc.
Bayan Northcott writes ... Rob Keeley is both a ‘natural’ as a composer, and a bit of an enigma. While his music always unfolds lucidly, often engagingly, it resists easy categorization - at least accordingly to current critical notions. Apparently untouched by avantgarderie, minimalism or post-modern poly-stylistics, it might seem to fall into a traditionalist slot or even be mistaken as academic. Yet his music sounds singularly undriven by theory or the fi ndings of analysis; nor will one so easily discover textbook sonata or fugal procedures in his works. More frequently he generates his forms by flexible refrain-and-chorus procedures, and sometimes, the illusion of traditional thematicism from variable ostinato or change-ringing permutations - suggesting his omnivorous ear has absorbed more ‘advanced’ techniques, from Ligeti, perhaps, or Birtwistle, but in his own way. |

Joel Holmes studied at the School forthe Performing Arts in Baltimora at first, then he took a degree in Jazz Performance at the John Hopkins University.He won several prizes as pianist and composer in the United States. He’s a member of the quintet ofRoy Hargrove since 2009 and he did tours in some of the most famous festivals and clubs of the world. He collaboratedalso with some stars of Jazz music such as Roberta Gambarini and Nnenna Freelon with whom herecorded an album nominated for a Grammy Award. Joel has done two albums which had a lot of successtrough the critics: “Ethernal Vision” in a trio and “African Skies” as a quartet featuring the saxophonist GaryThomas. He is now considered one of the best emerging pianist in the world. |
