Subcollection: ViolinHallén was a true Wagnerian -but most of his works are or a rather more intimate scale. Gustaf Wasa may have been a king of war or unrest in Sweden but the suite that comes from a play is more subdued and peaceful. The other pieces are also rather intimate -and Hallén's orchestration is very skillful and personal. The opening piece, Romanze, betrays a debt to Hallén's teacher Reinecke. |

The Symphony in C minor was a piece the composer cherished nonetheless. Here it is augmented by two great overtures he wrote in his student days, both modeled on examples from famous literature, by Goethe and Shakespeare. Both are world premiere recordings. This is a release that makes you regret that Dukas destroyed so many of his own works. |

The subtitle of Symphony no. 1 may indicate a big, glorious work, but these two symphonies by Peterson-Berger should be noted for their surprisingly delicate and skilful writing full of poignant nuances. No. 5 shows the quiet reflectiveness and nostalgia of the mature composer. |
