PETKO RADEV, clarinet, MARIA PRINZ, piano

PETKO RADEV, clarinet, MARIA PRINZ, piano
ID: GD226
CDs: 1
Type: CD
Collection: Instrumental
Subcollection: Piano and Clarinet

Petko Radev is a phenomenon in the musical performing art of Bulgaria. For several decades now he has managed, thanks to his talent and impressing experience, to stay at the summit of performance as clarinetist. Together with the pianist Maria Prinz, another perfect musician, he presents in this CD a selected programme interpreted with taste, which begins with the splendid Sonata for Clarinet and Piano by Brahms. In it the artistic class of the duo stands out. The CD ends with the remarkable piece of the Bulgarian composer and bassoonist Marin Valtchanov. Petko Radev makes an exceptionally strong impression with his highly individual manner of phrasing and sound expression, as well as with the beauty and the specific melodiousness of the tone - mild, subtle and expressive. He has mastered to perfection the secrets of his instrument and this permits him to create a picturesque, emotional, temperamental music. This kind of music cannot be forgotten. The sonatas by Brahms and Poulenc demonstrate the artistic freedom and interpreting skills of Petko Radev and his partner. Maria Prinz matches her part with the clarinet with a lot of taste and precision, without imposing but at the same time attracting delicately the interest towards the piano.

Poulenc: Quatre Motets Pour Le Temps De Noel
Poulenc’s religious music, while expressing perfectly his profound Catholic faith, was always closely bound up with his relationships with friends and lovers. He had been catapulted back to the church in 1936 by the death in appalling circumstances of the composer Pierre-Octave Ferroud. His great opera Dialogues des Carmelites was deeply affected by the illness and death of his lover Lucien Roubert. These four exquisite miniatures seem to have been written, between November 1951 and May 1952, at least in part as gifts for their dedicatees: indeed they are such private pieces that no proper record exists of their first performance. What may have been their premiere was given, rather incongruously, in Madrid by the Netherlands Chamber Choir. Poulenc dedicated the first of them, a dark, tender setting of "O Magnum Mysterium", to the conductor of that performance, Felix de Nobel. The gentle second motet "Quem Vidistis Pastores" was a tribute to one of Poulenc’s closest woman friends, Simone Girard. She was the secretary of the Avignon Concerts Society and by all accounts an indefatigable organiser and fine amateur pianist. To Poulenc she was indispensable. In a letter of 1951, in which he offers her the "Quem Vidistis", he tells her "You have the ultimate intelligence - quite simply that of the heart, a sentiment surely appropriate to this evocation of the simple shepherds seeing the star over Bethlehem. The set is completed by a setting, marked "Calme et doux", of "Videntes Stellam", and an exultant "Hodie Christus Natus Est" which seems to be made up entirely of fanfares.

Firma Melodiya presents the art of two young soloists - virtuoso clarinetist Ivan Stolbov and pianist Kim Ja Ran (South Korea - Russia). Both musicians are graduates of the St. Petersburg Conservatory, prize-winners of international competitions and active stage performers in Russia and overseas. Ivan Stolbov began to learn music since the age of nine. Now, he is a soloist of the Mariinsky Theatre orchestra and teaches at the St. Petersburg Music College. Among his major achievements are first prizes of the Rimsky-Korsakov International Competition in St. Petersburg, Jeunesses Musicales in Bucharest and the Wind and Percussion Competition in Tokyo. The musician gives open lessons and master classes around the world. Kim Ja Ran , who started to play music when she was four years old, has been a two-time prize-winner of the International Music Competition in Albena, Bulgaria, in the categories of best solo piano performance in 2005 and performance by a piano duo in 2007. Today, she is an artist of Petersburg-Concert. The album features compositions for clarinet and piano by composers of the 19th and 20th centuries. Many of the pieces are not that well known to today's Russian listeners. Sergey Taneyev's Canzona, Claude Debussy's Rapsodie, sonatas by Alexander Grechaninov, Francis Poulenc and Paul Hindemith demonstrate extensive performing and expressive skills of the young musicians. The recording was made at a concert of the Mariinsky Theatre in 2012.
