Instrumentarium Lipsiense (I)
Solche erhaltenen »Tonträger« erlauben heute aufschlußreiche Einblicke in frühere Interpretationsweisen.

Restless Love - Music of 19th Century Leipzig - Amarcord ensemble

Restless Love - Music of 19th Century Leipzig - Amarcord ensemble
ID: RKAP10108
CDs: 1
Type: CD
Subcollection: Ensemble

With its tenth CD, amarcord takes a stroll through the musical Leipzig of the nineteenth century. This anniversary release is in homage to the hometown of the five world-class vocalists who together form the vocal ensemble amarcord. They obviously feel very much at home in this repertoire and the listener is accorded many a musical discovery in Restless Love.

Light of the World -Tewkesbury Abbey School Choir - Andrew Swait

Light of the World -Tewkesbury Abbey School Choir - Andrew Swait
ID: SIGCD068
CDs: 1
Type: CD
Collection: Choral Collection
Subcollection: Choir

Now and again a choir director finds he has an exceptional voice at his disposal. Andrew Swait was only ten years old when this disc was made - his voice was the original inspiration for the disc - and it features his outstandingly colourful tone quality and musicianship. In choosing the repertoire, we kept in mind the integrity of the great English church music tradition. We decided to do what choirs - their men and boys - do best in this country; sing, enjoy and relish the music of that tradition. Solo arias are interspersed with full choir numbers, some featuring treble solos and duets. Works by Schubert and Rachmaninoff are coupled with works from our own English masters, Sir Hubert Parry and John Rutter. Morten Lauridsen’s setting of Ubi caritas, combines a lushness of texture with the age-old plainsong melody. We hope you will enjoy this collection from Tewkesbury.

Royal Albert Hall - Organ Restored - Simon Preston

Royal Albert Hall - Organ Restored - Simon Preston

Type: CD
Collection: Organ Collection
Subcollection: Organ

Since the Royal Albert Hall organ was inaugurated by W.T.Best, the most famous performer of his day, in the presence of Queen Victoria on the 29th March 1871, it seems appropriate to begin this programme with one of Best’s own organ transcriptions: the Overture to Mendelssohn’s Oratorio St. Paul. Mendelssohn’s own performances of Bach on the organ in St. Paul’s Cathedral and elsewhere during the 1830s had been wildly acclaimed by the crowds who came to hear him and Best took full advantage of the enormous surge in interest in performances of music arranged for the organ. After the Mendelssohn Overture it is but a short step to the symphonic nature of Schumann’s Six Fugues on the name B-A-C-H, to which the wide dynamic range and sonic possibilities of the Albert Hall organ are ideally matched.

In the Bolcom Fantasia, the composer fuses a modern compositional idiom with two Southern Spirituals, breathing new life into both forms with shattering effect; in a way the same thing has happened to the Albert Hall organ, and with modern blowers for the bellows taking the place of the original steam engines of 1871, it certainly has enough wind now to cope with most contingencies - as you will hear.

In America the traditions of theatre organ playing are still kept very much alive. As a child I remember playing two very old records over and over again on a wind-up portable gramophone - the sort that had wooden needles which you had to keep sharpening.

The first was George Thalben-Ball playing The Ride of the Valkyries on the Alexandra Palace organ, and the other - equally favourite - was Quentin MacLean playing Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue on the organ in the Odeon Marble Arch. At the age of five I could not work out how Quentin MacLean did the opening glissando in Rhapsody in Blue; apparently he used the Siren stop - useful for Cops and Robbers chases in the silent movies - switched the organ on and, when the wind went into the bellows, it produced this very smooth glissando up to the top E flat!

Joseph Jongen and Siegfrid Karg-Elert were near contemporaries, and although generally regarded as organ composers, both were prolific in other forms: symphonic music, choral and chamber music and even opera. Jongen’s music is most fastidiously composed and the architectural shape and grandeur of the Sonata Eroďca is in wonderful contrast to the quite unexpected delicacy of Karg-Elert’s Valse Mignonne; here the extremely discerning listener may pick up some unexpected sounds of the gentler percussion stops on the enclosed Solo division of the Albert Hall organ.

The Organ of Buckingham Palace Ballroom - Joseph Nolan

The Organ of Buckingham Palace Ballroom - Joseph Nolan
ID: SIGCD114
CDs: 1
Type: CD
Collection: Organ Collection
Subcollection: Organ

Following the success of Joseph Nolan’s appearance in Music for the Coronation of James II (SIGCD094), he returns to Signum with a solo disc of organ music, capturing music from some of the finest composers of the instrument. With J.S. Bach’s famous Passacaglia in C Minor to Noel Rawsthorne’s Dance Suite, (with inspiration from Michael Flatley’s Lord of the Dance) this disc certainly pushes the boundaries of organ music.

Fresh from a tour of the USA in 2007, Nolan has found international recognition as well as his commitments as organist at Her Majesty’s Chapels Royal where he was appointed in 2004.

Hear my words ye people by Hubert Parry, a former chorister at Eton College is the first track on the album featuring some of the bestloved anthems in the church repertoire, beautifully performed by the Eton College Chapel Choir.

The choir, formed in the 14th-Century has changed a great deal since the choir school was succeeded by a music scholarship system, designed to facilitate talented choristers with their education. Although life has changed at Eton, the music passed down over five hundred years still possesses a power to stir.
