Firma Melodiya presents a unique set of recordings by soloists of the USSR Bolshoi Theatre - outstanding singers who performed on the main stage of this country during 1945 to 1990.

They call it the golden age of the Bolshoi not for nothing.

The first music theatre of the country attracted undiverted attention of not just millions of spectators and listeners (getting a ticket to the Bolshoi was almost an impracticable task for a “common Soviet citizen”). The supreme leadership of the Soviet Union watched the life of the theatre as closely as real music lovers did. Nearly all the premieres took place under the sign of “special responsibility”. The theatre recruited the best artistic forces from all over the country, and in the post-war period there still were those who got their education and started their careers even before the revolution keeping the continuity of the old tradition of the Imperial Bolshoi Theatre.

Galina Vishnevskaya, Irina Arkhipova, Elena Obraztsova, Tamara Sinyavskaya, Sergey Lemeshev, Ivan Kozlovsky, Vladimir Atlantov, Alexander Pirogov, Mark Reizen, Evgeny Nesterenko are just some of 30 soloists featured in this set. They are accompanied by the Bolshoi Orchestra lead by various conductors such as Nikolai Golovanov, Samuil Samosud, Alexander Melik-Pashayev, Evgeny Svetlanov, Gennady Rozhdestvensky, Yuri Fayer, Mark Ermler, Alexander Lazarev and others. Each of them made a valuable contribution to the treasury of Russian music culture of the 20th century.

The set includes fragments from Russian classical opera and ballet repertoire of the 19th and 20th centuries, and some of the most popular foreign operas and ballets staged at the Bolshoi

Firma Melodiya presents a boxed set dedicated to the 75th anniversary of one of the outstanding contemporary Russian conductors, Dmitri Kitayenko.

“Today he can be undoubtedly considered one of the five or six best conductors of the world. This phenomenon is out of the ordinary”, Herbert von Karajan wrote about Kitayenko after the young Soviet conductor gave a brilliant performance at the international competition in Vienna, receiving the second prize and winning the hearts of the Viennese audience and media. Evgeny Svetlanov also greeted his younger colleague on the pages of the Soviet press as a talented and promising conductor.

A graduate of the Leningrad Conservatory who also completed a postgraduate course at the Moscow Conservatory and a training course at the Vienna Academy of Music, Dmitri Kitayenko had a brilliant start to his conducting career. From 1976 to 1990 he headed the Academic Symphony Orchestra of the Moscow Philharmonic Society. Under his leadership the celebrated orchestra substantially expanded its repertoire and actively toured.

During recent decades, the conductor worked with the orchestras of Western Europe, Japan, South Korea and the United States and regularly recorded.

This 6 CD set includes recordings made by Dmitri Kitayenko in the studio and in the concert hall between 1975 and 1987 with the orchestra of the Moscow Philharmonic Society and the USSR State Academic Symphony Orchestra. The repertoire included showcases the conductor’s stylistic diversity and highest mastery.

These recordings will be of interest to those who remembers Kitayenko’s performances of the past years and to a new generation of listeners as well.

Opera in three acts - Libretto by Luigi Illica, Giuseppe Giacosa

One of the most popular operas of the world repertoire, Tosca was finished in the last year of the 19th century. It was based on the French playwright Victorien Sardou’s drama written for Sarah Bernhardt. The premiere of the opera that took place in 1900 in Rome was not accepted with much enthusiasm, and only the performance at La Scala under Arturo Toscanini became a true triumph. The story of singer Floria Tosca and her beloved painter Mario Cavaradossi who fell victim to bloody despot Baron Scarpia on the background of the revolutionary events in Italy of the early 19th century is still able to move to the innermost of one’s heart as the heat of dramatic fervour is masterfully captured in the music. Numerous audio and video recordings of the opera featuring the world’s best singers and conductors were made in the previous century.
This recording was realized by the USSR Bolshoi Theatre in 1974. The celebrated internationally recognized soloists of the opera company of the 1970s Tamara Milashkina, Vladimir Atlantov, Yuri Mazurok and others perform the opera in the original language under the prominent conductor Mark Ermler.

Type: CD

Firma Melodiya presents recordings of the prominent singer and soloist of the USSR Bolshoi Theatre Zurab Anjaparidze.

“For eleven years of his career on the stage of the USSR Bolshoi Theatre he was … the best Herman, the best Radames, the best José. Whatever the singer undertook, he created, and id it in a thorough, unhurriedly, with a sense of enormous responsibility and his own artistic dignity.” This is how the outstanding Irina Arkhipova described the performing art of Zurab Anjaparidze who was one her perennial partners at the Bolshoi Theatre.

Thousands of spectators and listeners could not help but agree to her appraisal. Anjaparidze’s voice preserved on tape still resonates with the beauty of its sound, wealth of its timbre with an inimitable Italian flavour, emotional fullness of every character he went through. Zurab Anjaparidze debuted at the Bolshoi as José in Bizet’s Carmen in 1957. Along with the part of Radames in Verdi’s Aida, that role became Anjaparidze’s trademark, and soon the singer took the place of the leading heroic tenor of the opera company.

The role of Herman in Tchaikovsky’s Queen of Spades was the artist’s highest accomplishment at the Bolshoi. He also sang Herman on the Bolshoi’s tour at La Scala in 1964. After that making the Italian press dubbed him the “Soviet Franco Corelli.” The album includes fragments from the operas performed by Zurab Anjaparidze - The Queen of Spades, Carmen, Aida, as well as Verdi’s Il Trovatore and Otello, Puccini’s Tosca and Manon Lescaut, Donizetti’s L’elisir d’amore and Leoncavallo’s Pagliacci. The recordings were made in the 1960s and 1970s with the orchestra of the USSR Bolshoi Theatre conducted by Alexander Melik-Pashayev, Boris Khaikin and Mark Ermler.

Franco Corelli, Tito Gobbi, Gigliola Frazzoni, et al.: vocal soloists / Orchestra and Chorus of La Scala, Milan / Antonino Votto: conductor

Live performance, Milan, April 4, 1956. Puccini made a big hit with the American public when his new opera, The Girl of the Golden West, had its fi rst performance, not in Italy but at the Metropolitan Opera in New York, with Emmy Destinn and Enrico Caruso in the leading roles, and Toscanini conducting. The enthralled audience called out the composer and cast forty-seven times and placed on Puccini’s head a silver crown bearing the national colors of Italy and the US. When Franco Corelli died recently in Milan at the age of eighty-two, the opera world lost one of its most colorful figures, and the most thrilling Italian tenor of his generation. With his powerful voice and movie-star looks, Corelli became an opera matinee idol from the 1950s until his retirement in 1976. Opera d’Oro’s Grand Tier series presents the best-selling Opera d’Oro titles with libretto and deluxe new packaging at mid-price!
