Firma Melodiya presents a unique set of recordings by soloists of the USSR Bolshoi Theatre - outstanding singers who performed on the main stage of this country during 1945 to 1990.

They call it the golden age of the Bolshoi not for nothing.

The first music theatre of the country attracted undiverted attention of not just millions of spectators and listeners (getting a ticket to the Bolshoi was almost an impracticable task for a “common Soviet citizen”). The supreme leadership of the Soviet Union watched the life of the theatre as closely as real music lovers did. Nearly all the premieres took place under the sign of “special responsibility”. The theatre recruited the best artistic forces from all over the country, and in the post-war period there still were those who got their education and started their careers even before the revolution keeping the continuity of the old tradition of the Imperial Bolshoi Theatre.

Galina Vishnevskaya, Irina Arkhipova, Elena Obraztsova, Tamara Sinyavskaya, Sergey Lemeshev, Ivan Kozlovsky, Vladimir Atlantov, Alexander Pirogov, Mark Reizen, Evgeny Nesterenko are just some of 30 soloists featured in this set. They are accompanied by the Bolshoi Orchestra lead by various conductors such as Nikolai Golovanov, Samuil Samosud, Alexander Melik-Pashayev, Evgeny Svetlanov, Gennady Rozhdestvensky, Yuri Fayer, Mark Ermler, Alexander Lazarev and others. Each of them made a valuable contribution to the treasury of Russian music culture of the 20th century.

The set includes fragments from Russian classical opera and ballet repertoire of the 19th and 20th centuries, and some of the most popular foreign operas and ballets staged at the Bolshoi

Firma Melodiya presents a jubilee release of one of the most distinguished singers of modern times - Elena Obraztsova.

Obraztsova has sung at the world’s best opera and concert houses. Her operatic heroines are known and loved by millions of listeners on different continents. She has worked with the greatest opera directors, conductors and soloists. However, the singer still considers the Bolshoi Theatre her principal operatic home, where she debuted as Marina Mniszech in Boris Godunov more than fifty years ago.

That was the time of the Bolshoi’s golden cohort, when Obraztsova’s voice and dramatic gift shone among the other outstanding representatives of Soviet music art. That was an era of the Bolshoi’s first international triumphs when the young singer, along with the other new soloists of the troupe, was receiving rousing welcomes during the tours of Italy and the United States. That was an era when the perennial traditions existed in harmony with the spirit of newness introduced by the younger artists and the experience shared with foreign peers.

The release features fragments of Russian and foreign operas which make up just a portion of Elena Obraztsova’s extensive repertoire. Still, they largely convey the main features of her performing individuality, her mastery of musical dramatic transformation making us recognize the singer’s voice on recordings from different years.

The music by Donizetti, Verdi, Saint-Saens, Bizet, Massenet, Tchaikovsky, Rimsky-Korsakov and Mussorgsky is performed to the accompaniment of the USSR Bolshoi Theatre Orchestra conducted by the outstanding maestros Boris Khaikin, Odyssey Dimitriadi, Algis Žiūraitis and Mark Ermler.

Firma Melodiya presents an anniversary set dedicated to Vladimir Spivakov’s 70th birthday.
This outstanding musician is well-known and loved across the world. A violinist, educator, conductor, founder and permanent leader of the chamber orchestra Moscow Virtuosi and the National Symphony Orchestra of Russia, an organizer of the charity trust that supports talented children, a director of international music festivals both in Russia and overseas, a jury member of a number of violin competitions, and the president of the Moscow International House of Music. Maestro Spivakov’s artistic and social activities only broaden through the years - he performs all over the world, renews his violin and conducting repertoire playing with some of the best soloists and conductors.
The 5-CD set features Vladimir Spivakov as both a violinist and conductor on recordings made in 1970s to 1990s. That period of performing activity and creation of the Moscow Virtuosi was a bright phase in the maestro’s career leaving an unforgettable trace in performing arts of this country and the world. The chamber pieces by Schubert, Locatelli, Franck, Debussy, Ravel, Milhaud, Bartók and Prokofiev, and virtuosic numbers by Paganini, Wieniawski and Saint-Saëns were recorded with remarkable pianists such as Viktoria Postnikova and Boris Bekhterev; one of the CDs is dedicated to Mozart (Symphony No. 28 and the Coronation Mass) while another is dedicated to Rodion Shchedrin (Carmen Suite and also Music for the Town of Köthen written especially for Spivakov).
Spivakov’s earlier unreleased concert recordings at the 4th International Tchaikovsky Competition in 1970 are of particular interest. The violinist was awarded the second prize and a silver medal at the competition for his performance of Sibelius’s and Tchaikovsky’s violin concertos, and Tchaikovsky’s, Sarasate’s and Shchedrin’s pieces.

Melodiya presents an album of works for bassoon by West European composers performed by Sergei Krasavin.

An Honoured Artist of Russia, professor of the Gnessins Russian Academy of Music and prize-winner of the international competitions in Prague, Budapest and Munich, Sergei Krasavin is a reputable representative of the Russian performing school. After graduation from the Leningrad Conservatory where he studied bassoon under professor Dmitri Yeryomin, he was a soloist of the orchestra of the Leningrad Kirov State Academic Theatre of Opera and Ballet (now the Mariinsky Theatre), then a soloist of the USSR State Academic Symphony Orchestra, the country’s best one. In 1992 to 2006, he played in the French National Orchestra. The bassoonist has also regularly performed as a solo and ensemble musician. A virtuosic technique, expressed emotionality, the sound of rare beauty and an innate sense of form and style are virtues that can be used to describe the musician’s artistic gift.

Sergei Krasavin performs concertos for bassoon and orchestra by Antonio Vivaldi (he was the first composer to “discover” the bassoon as a virtuosic concerto instrument), a rare piece of Mozart - the Sonata for bassoon and cello, and the Sonata for bassoon and piano by Camille Saint-Saëns, the great French master’s last work.

Pianist Alexei Nasedkin and cellist Yuri Loyevsky, two of the leading representatives of Soviet performing art, took part in the recording along with Sergei Krasavin. The Ensemble of Soloists of the USSR State Symphony Orchestra is conducted by maestro Yuri Temirkanov.

Yehudi Menuhin - Anniversary Edition

Yehudi Menuhin - Anniversary Edition
ID: MELCD1002460
CDs: 6
Type: CD
Collection: Great Performers
Subcollection: Violin and Orchestra

For the 100th anniversary of the birth of Yehudi Menuhim, one of the greatest violinists of the 20th century, Firma Melodiya presents a set of historic recordings of his concerts in Moscow in 1945 and 1962. Yehudi Menuhim had a special place in store for him in the constellation of brilliant violinists of the previous century. He gave his first concert when he was seven years old, debuted with an orchestra at ten, and became famous across the world after his triumphant debut in Berlin at thirteen. Despite the hand illness he went through at the height of his performing career, Menuhin continued to perform as actively until the late 1980s. “As the years go by, his art is getting warmer and more humane…” wrote Lev Raaben. A son of Russian emigrant parents, Yehudi Menuhin visited this country several times. His first tour in November 1945 was an important event. It was the first time when a musician from the allied state came to the USSR. His chamber concerts were accompanied by the pianist Lev Oborin and the concertmaster Abram Makarov. He alternated large scale pieces with miniatures. Although technically imperfect, the phonograms of Menuhin’s Moscow concerts of 1945 and 1962 are still priceless phonographic documents of the era. Some of these featured recordings have not been previously released.

F. LISZT - Two Sonatas for Two Pianos- Ludmila Berlinsraya, piano - Arthur Ancelle, piano

F. LISZT - Two Sonatas for Two Pianos- Ludmila Berlinsraya, piano - Arthur Ancelle, piano
ID: MELCD1002463
CDs: 1
Type: CD
Subcollection: Piano

Firma Melodiya presents a recording of two-piano transcriptions by Franz Liszt and Camille Saint-Saëns performed by the piano duet of Ludmila Berlinskaya and Arthur Ancelle.
“The unity of beautiful souls,” wrote foreign reviewers about the duet. Representatives of famous artistic dynasties (Berlinskaya is a daughter of Valentin Berlinsky, an outstanding cellist, professor and founding member of the Borodin Quartet; Ancelle is a great grandson of the legendary opera diva Fanny Heldy, a grandson of a ballerina and a son of a theatre director) and alumni of different music performing traditions, they began to jointly perform in 2011 and have won the listeners’ hearts in Russia, France and Switzerland. Their joint debut album with Tchaikovsky’s music was highly acclaimed by BBC Music Magazine.
The programme of this album combines two, at first glance, completely different pianistic styles of the 19th century - Liszt and Saint-Saëns. However, the two great musicians took a genuine interest in each other’s works that was expressed in “mutual” transcriptions. Liszt unintentionally introduced the powerful current of his personality into his arrangements. The Dance of Death is an obvious example that makes the comparison between the two piano versions of this symphonic work, one transcribed by Liszt and the other transcribed by the author, even more interesting. On the other way around, a hint of Saint-Saëns is heard in his transcription of Liszt’s B minor Sonata he made for himself and his friend and outstanding French pianist Louis Diémer. The album also includes Liszt’s Après une Lecture de Dante: Fantasia quasi Sonata arranged for two pianos by Arthur Ancelle.
