• Brahms’ Op.34 Quintet in F Minor was originally intended by the composer as a two cello string quintet. Here in a 1946 reconstruction by Sebastian Brown we rediscover this familiar work in a completely new light.• Joseph Miroslav Weber led the Munich Opera for many years in the late nineteenth century. His prizewinning Quintet in D Major owes much to his Bohemian roots, as well as echoing Schoenberg’s Verklärte Nacht.• Divertimenti Ensemble have previously recorded highly praised CDs of Mendelssohn’s Octet, as well as chamber works by Howell, Dyson, and Bax, for Hyperion, Meridian and Dutton. This is their first CD for Cello Classics. |

Collection: Orchestral Works Subcollection: OrchestreThe third CD begins with Ponchielli and Dance of the Hours from the popular opera "La Gioconda" (1876). Then follow two overtures by the Austrian composer Franz von Suppe - "Beautiful Galathea" and "Leicht Kavallerie", Brahms' Hungarian Dances Nos 1, 5 and 6 (created during the period 1869-80). After that come the founder of the Czech national composers school Smetana and his symphonic poem The Moldau, and Weber - the founder of the German romantic and legendary-knights opera, with his famous Invitation to the Dance. The programme ends with one of the greatest masters of polyphonic music and founder of the classical type of oratorio - Haendel, who has written 32 oratorios, one of which is Judas Maccabaeus, an excerpt of which is included in this release. The CD thus features representatives of the pre-classical, classical and romantic periods, and some European national composers' schools. |

Subcollection: OrchestreJust as in the first three albums, the series MASTERS OF CLASSICAL MUSIC (vol. 1 - GD 245, vol. 2 - GD 246, vol. 3 - GD 247) continues to present composers from different epochs and their ever-loved works. The present programme features pieces written over a vast period of time. Even though each composer represents a different trend in music, they are all united by the eternity of their work. All of them were innovators in music and influenced their followers to a great extent: from the representatives of the Vienna classical school (Mozart and Beethoven), to the author of the first German romantic opera (Weber), the most outstanding comic opera composer (Rossini), up to Elgar, who worked in the beginning of the 19th and the end of the 20th c. |
