The Queen's Six - Daniel Brittain & Timothy Carleston (countertenors), Nicholas Madden & Dominic Bland (tenors), Andrew Thompson & Simon Whiteley (basses)
Following on from their acclaimed debut album (Music of the Realm - RES10146), a capella vocal sextet The Queen’s Six return with a captivating exploration of secular jewels by the same six composers associated with the Tudor and Jacobean royal courts featured on that earlier recording - Thomas Tomkins, William Byrd, Thomas Morley, Thomas Weelkes, William Byrd & Thomas Tallis.

Themes as diverse as royalty, balletts, birds, the natural world, dedications and love & death serve to celebrate the immense range of this golden age of English music.

Following the critical acclaim of their debut album ‘Music of the Realm’, The Queen’s Six return to Resonus with a programme of secular madrigals from the same six English Renaissance composers all associated with the royal court of Queen Elizabeth I, from whom the group take their name.

Entitled ‘Her Heavenly Harmony: Profane Music from the Royal Court’, The Queen’s Six present a recital of well- and lesser-known works by Morley, Weelkes, Tomkins, Byrd, Tallis and Gibbons, with various themes of ‘Royalty’, ‘Planets’, ‘Ballets’, ‘Birds and Flowers’, ‘Dedications’ and ‘Love and Death’.

This recording brings together five remarkable works for oboe and strings written between 1926 and 1946 and representing an English renaissance for the oboe as a chamber music instrument. It is a period which is musically very rich and diverse, with English composers showing new influences from Europe and America. The range and expression across these works is striking and is a tribute to the artistry of the oboist Léon Goossens, who is the dedicatee of three of the works and who taught the dedicatees of certainly one and possibly both of the other two. He was also the player behind two other important works by Bax and Finzi. These magnificent seven works, it can be argued, established a repertoire for oboe quartets and quintets and did much to promote the oboe as a chamber music instrument.

Goossens’ exquisite playing was characterised by a distinctive and sensitive sound, beautiful phrasing, a wide dynamic and tonal range and great rhythmic vitality. His collaboration with Sir Arnold Bax produced the first significant work for oboe and strings, the Quintet written in 1922 and recorded by Goossens with the International Quartet in 1924 (featured on Oboe Classics CC2005). Bax’s music, with its pastoral and elegiac qualities together with a strong Irish influence leant itself superbly to Goossens’ playing and this work must surely be partly responsible for the works on this recording. copyright George Caird 2004

Thomas Tallis: The Complete Works - Vol. - The Instrumental Music and Songs

Thomas Tallis: The Complete Works - Vol. - The Instrumental Music and Songs
ID: SIGCD042

Kolektion: RenaissanceSubkolektion: Choir

The final release explores the most obscure and enigmatic corner of Tallis’s output - his secular music. His profession as church musician and member of the Chapel Royal did not require him to write secular songs or pieces, yet some works may have been written for the Tudor court. Other works are thought to have been written for generations of choir boys, who were assisted with their training by the composer. Plays and performances outside of the choirboy’s obligation were popular, as well as instrumental consort music and keyboard pieces associated with their training. Tallis is likely to have been given the opportunity to write his secular works for these occasions.

Tallis’s music was admired and used by others far beyond the Chapel Royal and the court. Some of his intended sacred choral works are included on this recording in other guises, arranged by musicians with performance intentions very different to that of the church. His reputation of greatness amongst his friends and contemporaries is reflected in William Byrd’s elegy Ye sacred muses, where he echoes the sentiments of others with the words "Tallis is dead, and Music dies". This musical tribute has justifiably become one of Byrd’s most popular works.

Volume 9 of The Complete Works is a double CD release, marking the end of this popular series. Alistair Dixon has realised the project, and directed his choir Chapelle du Roi throughout the earlier volumes. Musicians featured on this final disc are: Andrew Benson-Williams (organ), Laurence Cummings (virginals), the ensemble Charivari Agréable, Lynda Sayce (lute), and Stephen Taylor (counter tenor)
