The stunning performance of Les Illuminations by world-renowned soprano Sandrine Piau has been made possible thanks to the French label Naïve kindly releasing Sandrine from her exclusive recording contract for this CD. The ‘Clarinet Concerto’ was written for jazz star Benny Goodman, but Britten never completed it as the sketches were impounded by US Customs in 1941. It was Britten’s intention to resume work on the piece in 1943 but he never got round to it and so it remained a fragment, not performed until edited by Colin Matthews in 1990.
Britten intended the additional three songs recorded here-also setting Rimbaud-to be part of Les Illuminations. Sandrine Piau’s love affair with the music of Benjamin Britten blossomed when she was chosen to sing the role of Flora in Britten’s Turn of the Screw at Radio France.
In memoriam Dennis Brain for 4 horns, strings and tubular bells commemorates the great horn player for whom Britten wrote his Serenade for tenor, horn and strings. He died in a car crash in 1957. |

Rich, powerful musical language and a strong sense of drama have made Thea Musgrave one of the most respected and exciting of living composers. Born in Edinburgh in 1928, she studied at the University of Edinburgh then in Paris, where she spent four years as a pupil of Nadia Boulanger, before establishing herself in London with her orchestral, choral, operatic and chamber works. She has lived in the US since 1970.
Musgrave’s ‘opera for radio’ sets a dreamlike tale of the American Civil War based on An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge, a short story written in the late 19th century by Ambrose Bierce.
Thea Musgrave says .... These three works, though all very different and written decades apart, nevertheless share a common subject: conflict. An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge (1981), a heart-breaking story from the American Civil war; Wild Winter I (1993), a setting of poems from many different countries and in several different languages about the inevitable losses and cruelties of war; and Green (2007), an abstract conflict of a life-giving force against its suffocating nemesis. |

Big Meeting is an extraordinary collage of voices, speeches, songs, brass bands and their electronic transformations, which David Lumsdaine constructed from location recordings of the 1971 Durham Miners’ Gala - a record of one of the last of the annual meetings before the county’s pits were closed.
Over the last forty years David Lumsdaine has composed a body of strikingly original music, including Aria for Edward John Eyre (recorded on NMC D007), Hagoromo, Mandala 3, Bagatelles, Mandala 5, Garden of Earthly Delights and Kali Dances. His work is influenced not only by the music of other traditions and cultures, but also the music of the natural world. At its heart, his music embodies his experience of the Australian landscape - the variety of its shapes, rhythms, colours and textures: the vitality of its creatures; its sudden violence; its sense of unlimited space and time. His passion for the natural world and its conservation expresses itself more literally in his archive of birdsong and recorded soundscapes, many of which have been released on CD. |

Mark Simpson writes ... When I was asked to perform Mozart’s Clarinet Concerto in 2008 with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, it was expected that I would play the work on a modern-day basset clarinet. Having purchased one and used it in performance, I wasn’t happy to leave it sat idly gathering dust in its case. In my eyes the basset clarinet is an exciting enhancement of the standard soprano clarinet, and its logical development: its lower range gives it a subtler and richer sonority than the soprano clarinet.
The works on this disc are a culmination of five years of actively working with and commissioning composers. My aim during this period was to develop the repertoire for the basset clarinet, and also provide a platform for composers in whose work I was interested and believed in; I was able to develop these relationships through the opportunities that followed my winning BBC Young Musician of the Year in 2006. |

This collection of premiere recordings of orchestral works by Harrison Birtwistle span a period of ten years (1994-2004).
The works move away from the composer’s forceful and monolithic grandeur, of which he has become associated, and have a more reflective, otherworldly and subtle sound, exploring the world of melancholy.
The Shadow of Night is a slow nocturne, exploring the world of melancholy, inspired by the composer’s life-long fascination with Dürer’s engraving Melencolia I, and Night’s Black Bird (commissioned by the Roche Foundation) continues with the same reflective musical imagery. The Cry of Anubis, part tuba concerto, part tone poem, grew out of Birtwistle’s fascination with Anubis, the jackal-headed god of the necropolis in Egyptian mythology who played an important part in
Birtwistle’s surreal recent opera The Second Mrs Kong (1993-94).
This is The Hallé’s first recording for NMC. |

Ed Bennett’s music, which has been described in the press as ‘anarchic’ (Irish Times), ‘manic’ (Classical Music), ‘brutal’ (Guardian) and ‘beautiful’ (Gramophone) is often characterized by its strong rhythmic energy, extreme contrasts and the combination of acoustic, electronic and multimedia elements. In common with a number of composers of his generation, Bennett developed an interest in classical music relatively late - his earlier musical experiences were in bands and improvisation groups and these interests are still evident in his music.
Highlights include Ghosts, for amplified viola d’amore, that explores the acoustic peculiarity of the baroque instrument: beneath its seven strings the instrument has seven sympathetic strings creating a ghost-like resonant sound around the bowed notes. Stop-Motion Music applies to music a ‘stop-start’ technique Bennett admires in the work of surrealist Czech animator Jan Svankmajer and a childhood memory of an old fairground filled with ‘laughing policemen, mechanical fortune tellers, tests of strength, ghost trains and an array of other eccentric machines’ is the inspiration for My Broken Machines. |
