MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS IN BULGARIA - Demko Kurtov's ZOURNA GROUP

MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS IN BULGARIA - Demko Kurtov's ZOURNA GROUP

Type: CD

Bulgarian musical folk tradition includes a variety of musical instruments. The different folk regions feature various instruments and this is especially evident in recent times, when part of them have been replaced with the so-called 'modern' instruments. Along with the old ones, these modern instruments have already become part of the Bulgarian musical folklore. The wide variety of instruments used has inspired GEGA NEW to begin releasing the series called MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS IN BULGARIA. Each release of the series will present a separate instrument. The first programme features the tambura (GD 278), and the present second album is dedicated to the zurna. The zurna, a wooden whistle with cane reed and oboe-like sound, is among the most colourful wind instruments in traditional Bulgarian music. In the past, the zurna instrument was used throughout Bulgaria, but today this tradition has been preserved in Southwest Bulgaria only. Some performers, descendants of folk musicians, still sustain the zurna tradition in these regions. One of the most outstanding representatives is the Kurtov family from the village of Kavrakirovo, Petrich municipality. Just as the founder of the Kurtov musical family, Kurta Demo Limanov, his followers Ismail, Shein, Demko, Selim, Asen and others, carry the tradition of the family and preserve the characteristic Petrich style of performance. Demko Kurtov's Zurna Group is the most active of them. Besides him, it includes his son Samir (Krassimir), his brother-in-law Lyuben Fetov, and his nephew Ognyan Fetov. Incredible virtuoso players, they demonstrate in a convincing way the possibilities of the zurna instrument. The programme contains 16 instrumental performances of Bulgarian traditional music, recorded especially for this release.

STOYAN VARNALIEV - The Songs of Orpheus

The Thracain folk region is the biggest and the most varied in Bulgaria. Due to its vast territory, it is naturally divided into sub-regions. In them the common musical and dialect features prevail, yet their unique usage lends specific colour to each region. In this regional variety, the Yambol region stands out with its distinctive folk music, yet few have been the singers who have managed to popularize it. That is why Gega New gladly agreed to record and release the first album of the young singer Stoyan Varnaliev. Born in 1968, Stoyan Varnaliev grew up with the songs of his native region and in particular with those of Valkana Stoyanova, a superb singer from the Yambol region, who has become a paragon of Thracian singing. The thrill with which the young singer sang her songs is easy to understand, and the experienced performer appreciated his natural talent and started working with him. Later she gave him as a present 80 of her songs, part of which she had never recorded. The pupil worthily continued the work of his teacher and the Yambol region has again a talented and characteristic representative.
The present programme will lend new life to the beauty of the Yambol folklore and will introduce to folk music lovers a performer, who has a lot to give to music.

This is the first programme of the series MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS IN BULGARIA that Gega New begins to release. It will feature all instruments used in Bulgarian folk practice (authentic as well as the so-called 'modern' ones). The present release presents the tambura. The instrument was carried to Bulgaria in the 7th century. It still exists in Asia (Uzbekistan, Tadjikistan, etc.) under various names and was widely-known on the Balkans by the name "bulgaria" ("bugaria"). The tambura was used in almost all parts of Bulgaria up to the end of the 20th century. Today it is characteristic mainly of the Pirin folk region, though it takes significant part in the ensembles and instrumental groups as an accompanying folk instrument, especially during the second part of the 20th century, when the characteristic tambura performing style was formed.
The musician who proved that the tambura is of equal worth with the other folk instruments is Rumen Sirakov. Being the son of the famous folk singer Pavel Sirakov, it was natural that Rumen should begin to play folk music: first he started playing the whistle, then the trumpet and the clarinet. Simultaneously, he graduated from the school of classical guitar and this provoked his interest to the tambura, making him the best performer of this instrument. At 17 he began playing in the Bulgarian National Radio Folk Songs Ensemble. Then, together with the prominent kaval-player Stoyan Velichkov and the gadulka-player Mihail Marinov, founded the Trakiiska Troika. He has made a number of recordings for the Bulgarian National Radio, given concerts throughout Bulgaria, in England, the USA, Australia, etc. He also worked with Trio Bulgarka, Cate Bush, and had personal artistic contacts with George Harrison and Eric Clapton, the world-known guitarist. Rumen Sirakov's art has been highly appreciated at prestigious international forums. His teaching career is also of great significance and his students are among the best tambura-players. Recently, he marked the 40th anniversary of his creative activity. His contribution as a performer and founder of the Bulgarian school of tambura performance is undeniable. For this reason Gega New begins the musical instruments series with such a renowned and original musician.

In 1967 the first European secondary school of folk arts was established. The idea of its founders was to prepare singers, dancers, and instrument players for the numerous folk ensembles existing in Bulgaria at that time. In the school the children learn folk instruments, vocal art, folk dances and the art of making folk instruments. Today, the former pupils of the “Philip Koutev” Folk School are among the most famous participants in the professional ensembles and respected teachers in the secondary schools of music in Bulgaria and the National Academy of Music and Dance Arts in Plovdiv. There are also many renowned soloists among them: Binka Dobreva, Elitsa Todorova, Theodosii Spassov - kaval, the gadulka players Tsvetan Tsvetkov and Dimiter Lavchev, Lyubomir Vladimirov - tambura, Ivan Varimezov - gaida, and many others. The folk choir has existed ever since the foundation of the school; the girls in the choir are selected after a competition. In its long history the choir has sung hundreds of songs from all folk regions in Bulgaria - authentic and arranged songs, or authors’ songs by outstanding composers: Philip Koutev, Anastas Naumov, Krassimir Kyurkchiisky, Stafan Kanev, Kosta Kolev, Nikolai Kaufmann … Many of the songs were composed especially for the choir. The choir has given a lot of concerts in Bulgaria, Italy, France, Denmark, Russia, Greece, Holland, the USA. Of special interest is its participation in the project of DJ Tiësto - “Tiësto in concert”in 2004 in Holland. The Folk Choir of the “Philip Koutev” National School of Folk Arts conducted by Katya Barulova has also made numerous recordings for the Bulgarian National Radio and TV programmes. The present recordings have been specially made for the album “At Daybreak”. The girls demonstrate a wonderful mastership of the style differences of various folk regions in Bulgaria and perform with great ease even the most difficult choir scores. This is a real achievement of the choir’s conductor Katya Barulova.

The two brothers Dimitar and Nedko Bogdanov and the daughter of Dimitar - Ani, present their fascinating music. It is based on Bulgarian folk music expressed through the concept of the three musicians. Every song and instrumental piece is written in the spirit of the folk traditions, but the musicians have also used techniques which are typical of some other genres. They impress with their thorough knowledge of folk music and at the same time - with their incredible perception of music, marked improvisation and proficiency in mastering the voice and the instrument. Theodosii Spassov writes in the notes to the CD: “The pieces in the CD have been created and presented in very good taste, inventiveness and a feeling of humour, which characterizes every professional musician that works with creativity and constructive freedom.”
Dimitar and Nedko finished the Philip Koutev Secondary School of Music in Kotel, while Ani is still a student of music with main subject at school - folk singing. Dimitar Bogdanov played with some of the most renowned wedding orchestras in Bulgaria, and since 1998 he has been working with his brother and is soloist of the Mladi Trakiitsi orchestra. When referring to classical arrangement of Bulgarian folk music, the name of Stefan Kanev (1930-1991) is associated with some of the most exquisite songs and instrumental masterpieces. He received an academic education in music (opera singing, composition, theory of music and pedagogy) and entered the world of folk art by chance, but his creative biography was connected to folklore up to the end of his life. His name is also related to the most brilliant and beloved Bulgarian folk performers and ensembles. Almost every singer or instrumentalist from the second half of the 20th century had worked with Stefan Kanev. Thus the real masterpieces in folk art were created like: “Hei, Neda”, “Three nightingales are singing”, “Eyes, black eyes”, “Don’t be in a hurry, Sun”, and hundreds of others, some of which you will be able to hear in this original overview of beloved performers, songs and melodies.

Bulgarian folk music creates great interest throughout the world. The concerts given by Bulgarian ensembles are received with enthusiastic applause, and in some countries amateur groups are created in which Bulgarian folk music is learned and performed.
Gega New has already released albums of two such folk groups: Topolovo Orchestra from France (GD 148) and Balkan Transit from Denmark (GD 311). We now present to our listeners the wonderful recordings of Cubrica Ensemble from the Netherlands.
Cubrica Ensemble was created in 2003 by the Bulgarian singer Galina Durmushliyska and producer Jaap van Beelen of Etnic Foundation, the Netherlands. They had previously worked with a female choir, but now the choir is mixed. The Dutch choir conductor Ivo Boswijk was invited to conduct the new choir. The repertoire that the ensemble presents is a real challenge. There is minimal choir literature for mixed choir in Bulgarian folklore style; songs have been written mainly for women’s choirs. The ensemble collaborates with some Bulgarian composers (Gencho Genchev, Patar Krumov, Milcho Vassilev, etc.), who composed the songs especially for the ensemble. Ivo Boswijk and Galina Durmushliyska made the arrangements for mixed choir of some authentic folk songs from different regions of Bulgaria. They also include some works that have already become classics in the folk genre.
The Godini, Godini programme presents the Bulgarian traditional ritual calendar. It begins with Christmas songs and finishes with the autumn festivities. When performed on the stage, the musicians sing and play and video images show different scenes of Bulgarian culture. The audience is thus taken on a journey through the music, nature and ancient monuments of Bulgaria. The premiere of the show was on 10 April 2005 in the Korzo Theatre in The Hague. It created great interested and was received very enthusiastically by the audience.
In order to get acquainted with the country where the songs originated, the performers visited Bulgaria. At the invitation of the Philip Koutev School for Folk Music , the ensemble presented the programme in the town of Kotel and its vicinity (May 2005). Their next Bulgarian tour was in October 2005 and was instigated by the municipality of Blagoevgrad and the Pirin Ensemble. In 2006 they took part in the New Bulgarian Music Festival in the National Palace of Culture in Sofia. After the concert they were invited by the Foundation of Intercultural Dialogue in Vidin and the surrounding area and it was in connection with this third tour that the CD album was recorded. The tours they made encouraged the ensemble to develop a new project, Kontrasti, Kontrasti, which will have its premiere in 2008.
Cubrica has achieved a tremendous amount since 2003. The ensemble has gone far beyond its humble amateur beginning, and developed its own sound. When they perform they succeed in creating the atmosphere of a real folklore festivity.

Kalinka Zgurova started singing on stage when she was only 11 years old. She gained distinction when she was 15 at the First National Singing Competition in the village of Gramatikovo, Bulgaria, in 1960. Since then she has been soloist in some of the most renowned Bulgarian folk formations: the Bulgarian National Radio Folk Dances Ensemble, Pirin Ensemble - Blagoevgrad, Zagore Ensemble - Stara Zagora. She is founder of the Zornitsa vocal Trio and has performed with it songs from different parts of Bulgaria specially arranged for the chamber trio. Kalinka Zgurova’s greatest success, however, is connected with The Mystery of Bulgarian Voices Choir.
She has recorded hundreds of songs for the Bulgarian National Radio, the Bulgarian National TV, etc. Aiming to enlarge her repertoire, she has always tried to discover authentic songs from her native Strandja region. Being very well acquainted with the original folklore, she is also very successful as a composer. The songs composed by her continue the tradition of her nameless predecessors and are easily integrated into every folk programme. A part of them have been included in this release and they can be inferred only by the information in the booklet.
Many performers of folk songs today look for ways of making folklore sound more up-to-date, but a few of them are successful. Kalinka Zgurova is very careful with regard to the “electronic” arrangements. In spite of their “modern apparel”, her songs are true to the original source.

A female vocal group from the village of Beli Iskar, Samokov Municipality

Choir leader: Lyudmila Stoikova

Recorded at the Library of the Stoine Angelov Cultural Center, the village of Beli Iskar, Samokov Municipality

11 women from the village of Beli Iskar, Samokov Municipality have recorded 21 authentic songs the way they remember them from their mothers and grand-mothers. The village is a part of the big folklore region of West Bulgaria, which is characterized by the two-part singing. The famous researcher of Bulgarian folklore Vassil Stoin collected 1115 songs from this region (1935). He even hinted that the Bulgarian two-part singing precedes and forms the base of the European multi-part singing style. A part of these songs are no longer performed today. But what has been preserved gives a clear idea of how the music had accompanied all these moments of the lives of our ancestors. By listening to these songs we can follow the calendar year and the traditions of the people of this region.
These are songs which are performed at weddings, working-bees, at the village dance, at the dining table, at harvest, on the eve of St. Basil’s Day, during berry-picking, and in the field. The recording for this CD has an interesting story behind it. A team of ecology adherents from the USA visited Bulgaria in 2003 to support nature conservation in Rila National Park. They heard the women of Beli Iskar and were fascinated by their authentic singing. The team leader proposed sponsorship for a studio release and thus the preparation of the group began. At that time some of the women didn’t sing for various reasons, but a group of 11 was formed and they revived the traditional songs of the village. Thus, with the financial support of the US Norbert H. Hardner Foundation, these songs will take us back to our roots.
