Subcollection: Folk MusicNikolai Kaufmann is not only among the most adept Bulgarian musical scholars, a folklorist who has dedicated his life to the preservation, classification, tracing down and popularising the enormous national legacy, but also a composer who has created hundreds of songs - choral, solo, folk-song arrangements, as well as chamber-instrumental works. The CD presents Kaufmann's multi-faced talent with a varied selection of his works. Together with the Three dances (for piano) from "Anthology of Bulgarian Rhythms" and the Dilmano, Dilbero Variations for Piano, one can also hear two pieces for flute and piano, all of them based on Bulgarian metres and rhythms. The release also includes Kaufmann's arrangements of Sephardic and Ashkenazi songs from the Balkans, masterfully re-created by the author as splendid pieces. Folk-music lovers will relish the folk songs from different regions in Bulgaria.

Subcollection: Folk MusicIn its historical development Bulgaria has undergone many vicissitudes. Great masses of people settled to live on its territory, accepting the traditions of the local people and at the same time influencing their way of life and culture. This resulted in the appearance of specific regions in the country with their own unique, diverse and multi-layered traditions. A region of such specific nature is the northeastern part of the country. Tracing the art of its singers and instrumentalists, we can draw a picture of the musical and folk traditions of the area.
Sonya Kancheva is a renowned singer from Northern Bulgaria and boasts of a beautiful voice and an exceptional repertoire. She has collected and recorded hundreds of songs from her native place which illustrate to a great extent the interaction of local and adopted musical culture.
Since 1951, when she made her first recordings with Radio Sofia, she has recorded over 270 songs, and there are about 500 more in her personal archives. For many years she has been visiting a great number of villages in this region and the songs she collected from there seem to live a new live of their own with her performance. Sonya Kancheva is the first singer from the region of Varna who has revealed to the listeners the fascinating folklore of Northern Bulgaria. She is still a much favoured performer by people of different ages and an example for the younger folk singers. |

Subcollection: Folk MusicContemporary musical life in Bulgaria creates new musical forms based on folklore. Thеy arouse our curiosity towards the original sources and ancient culture. The present recording of the twin sisters Zdravka and Pirinka Hristovi calls to mind the lasting values from the past. Having grown up in Bansko, a town situated at the foot of the Pirin Mountains (Southwest Bulgaria), they had the chance to pick up its specific local culture. Their musical talent took them to the Higher School of Music and Pedagogy in Plovdiv. After graduating, they become soloists of the Pirin State Ensemble for Folk Songs and Dances in Blagoevgrad. Their long-time connection with this famous ensemble ranks them among the best performers of traditional Bulgarian folk music. Together with the Pirin Ensemble, and then with Sofia Singers Folk Choir, the Hristovi sisters have toured many countries worldwide. Currently they are teachers in folk singing at the National High School of the Humanities in the town of Blagoevgrad. This programme is a kind of return back to the roots of Bulgarian folklore and presents the musical traditions of Bansko from the ancient style of singing "na atzane" (a complex vocal technique that few of today's singers have mastered), up to the two-part singing from the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th centuries. The instrumental accompaniment to the songs, done with artistic taste and a feeling of style, completes the beauty of the melodies and brings genuine pleasure to those who are ready to open their hearts to the charm of the Pirin songs.

Subcollection: Folk MusicPetar Ralchev is a a remarkable virtuoso not only in the sphere of folk music but also of classical music. While still a student, he was awarded the first prize at the Young Musicians Competition in Chirpan, Bulgaria, and later on received the special award at the International Competition in Klingental, Germany. Together with the violinist Georgi Yanev he founded the Orpheus Orchestra. He takes part in various orchestras and projects performing with almost all leading folk and jazz musicians (Ivo Papazov, Delcho Mitov, Stoyan Yankulov, among others). Audiences throughout Europe and North America have admired Mr. Ralchev's performing and he was included in the History of Accordion, published in France in 1991 by Francois Billard and Didier Roussin. So far Petar Ralchev has released 9 albums, both solo and in co-work with other prominent musicians. The new CD (his 10th in number) includes brilliant renditions of folk music from Bulgaria, Serbia, Romania and France. |

Subcollection: Folk MusicSnejanka Borissova is one of Bulgaria's most interesting Shoppe region singers. Being a performer of authentic folk songs, she is at the same time always ready to experiment and her most recent recordings are in the ethno-techno-folk style. She is closely connected with her native village of Lozen and has never stopped collecting and learning songs from that region. Many of these songs are prominent in the repertoire of the Philip Koutev Ensemble for Folk Songs and Dances, where Snejanka Borissova was soloist in the period 1982-2001. Her recordings for the Bulgarian National Radio made these songs popular throughout Bulgaria.
Her rich professional experience in the Philip Koutev Ensemble, as well as in other chamber formations like Trio Bulgarka-Penev and Lozenki Quintet, and her participation in the quartet of Bulgarian singers who recorded the soundtrack to Goran Bregovich's movie "Underground" speak of her as a performer not only of traditional folk songs, but also of some experimental genres. She has also performed the vocal parts in movie co-productions, including the Italian-American "Saint Paul" and "Julius Caesar". The Bulgarian audience remembers well her vocal participation in the theatre production of "The Gospel According to Mathew", a one-man show by Marius Kurkinsky, famous for his extravagant artistic taste. Even though these are only incident performances, they speak of her desire to look for new and various ways for making the Shoppe folk tradition more popular.

Subcollection: Gypsy MusicThe origin of the gypsies goes back to ancient times. Their fatherland is believed to be India, but after the 5th c. AD they migrated to other parts of the world. They came to Europe between the 9th and the 11th c. - first on the Balkans and in the 15th c. they settled in the rest of the continent. Their culture has been influenced to a great extent by that of the other ethnic communities, but even today most of the specific and characteristic elements of their music and dances are preserved in the Balkans. For this reason every gypsy music release of the Balkan region is received with great interest.
There are many outstanding musicians among the Bulgarian gypsies, but one of the best experts and performers of Gypsy music is Angelo Malikov. He is a composer, arranger, conductor, teacher and virtuoso cimbalom-player. He was born in Sofia in the family of the well-known Romany intellectual Yashar Malikov. Angelo first began playing the cimbalom and after that he discovered the violoncello. He finished the School of Music in Sofia and later graduated from the Pancho Vladigerov State Academy of Music. His academic background did not distance him from the Romany music and he continuously created folk formations, collected traditional songs and dances and recorded them as soloist, conductor, or composer. His performances in a number of international festivals in Switzerland, the Netherlands, France, Germany, Russia, the Czech Republic, Hungary have always presented the preserved music tradition of Bulgarian Gypsies. He has also worked as soloist of the Skopje Philharmonic in Macedonia and of the Biel Philharmonic, Switzerland. Angelo Malikov is very active in Bulgaria in polpularizing the authentic Gypsy music. He is one of the organizers of the prestigious forum of Romany music in Bulgaria - the Romfest in the town of Stara Zagora. He is also founder of the Youth Romany Ensemble in Sofia, thus involving the young to the Romany traditions.
Angelo Malikov has selected and recorded for the present release popular folk songs and dances, as well as some original compositions. The album incudes lyrics to the songs in Bulgarian, English and Gypsy languages, thus enabling the listeners to feel the poetic content of the songs.

Subcollection: Folk MusicNorth Bulgaria has a fascinating folk music, which has been influenced by the neighbouring folk regions and the local culture. Pure folk elements from neighbouring regions often "cross" the provisory boundaries and create curious interrelations with the local traditional culture. The recordings of accordionist Yanko Zhelyazkov included in this release serve as an eloquent illustration of these interrelations. Born in 1945, he comes from the village of Brest, Pleven District, situated by the Danube River. His interest for the accordion was inherited from his father and his uncle, who were both famous accordionists. The greater part of his professional experience (of over 40 years) is connected with the Severnyashki (Northern) Ensemble for Folk Songs and Dances - Pleven. Along with his work in the ensemble, he dedicates a great part of his time and efforts to working with amateur choirs and orchestras. This helps him enrich his own repertoire with interesting songs and instrumental melodies from his native region. Subcollection: Folk MusicBulgarian musical folk tradition includes a variety of musical instruments. The different folk regions feature various instruments and this is especially evident in recent times, when part of them have been replaced with the so-called 'modern' instruments. Along with the old ones, these modern instruments have already become part of the Bulgarian musical folklore. The wide variety of instruments used has inspired GEGA NEW to begin releasing the series called MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS IN BULGARIA. Each release of the series will present a separate instrument. The first programme features the tambura (GD 278), and the present second album is dedicated to the zurna. The zurna, a wooden whistle with cane reed and oboe-like sound, is among the most colourful wind instruments in traditional Bulgarian music. In the past, the zurna instrument was used throughout Bulgaria, but today this tradition has been preserved in Southwest Bulgaria only. Some performers, descendants of folk musicians, still sustain the zurna tradition in these regions. One of the most outstanding representatives is the Kurtov family from the village of Kavrakirovo, Petrich municipality. Just as the founder of the Kurtov musical family, Kurta Demo Limanov, his followers Ismail, Shein, Demko, Selim, Asen and others, carry the tradition of the family and preserve the characteristic Petrich style of performance. Demko Kurtov's Zurna Group is the most active of them. Besides him, it includes his son Samir (Krassimir), his brother-in-law Lyuben Fetov, and his nephew Ognyan Fetov. Incredible virtuoso players, they demonstrate in a convincing way the possibilities of the zurna instrument. The programme contains 16 instrumental performances of Bulgarian traditional music, recorded especially for this release.
