MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS IN BULGARIA - Wind Orchestra

MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS IN BULGARIA - Wind Orchestra

Brass Collection

After featuring the tambura, zourna and gaida instruments (GD 278, GD 276, GD 106), the series continues with presenting horos and ruchenitsa for wind orchestra. Having originated after the liberation of the Bulgarian people from the rule of the Ottoman Empire (1878), today they have become a necessary part of all festive celebrations in Bulgaria.
The intense development of music and performance art during the first years of independence in Bulgaria lead to the creation of professional symphonic, opera and chamber ensembles. Together with them the first military wind orchestras were formed. Their repertoire consists of marches, polkas, overtures, etc., as well as horo music and medleys of folk songs. A large number of composers at that time wrote folk-based music for wind orchestras. The most talented composer of such music was Diko Iliev. After his participation in the Balkan War and the First World War, he began composing horos, which are still being loved by the Bulgarian people. From 1931 Diko Iliev played the baritone in the newly-founded wind orchestra in Oryahovo and thus he put the beginning of one of his most intense periods of creative activity. Iliev had the happy fate to become an inseparable part of the Bulgarian urban musical folklore. After him other well-trained musicians continued this trend. Today the wind orchestra is an intrinsic part of the Bulgarian folk music culture.

Michael Nyman- Nyman Brass - Wingates Band -including UK Premiere Recording of music from the film ‘The Ogre’

Michael Nyman- Nyman Brass - Wingates Band -including UK Premiere Recording of music from the film ‘The Ogre’
ID: MNRCD110
CDs: 1
Type: CD
Subcollection: Brass

The two main sequences on the album are from the scores to The Ogre [Volker Schlondorff, 1996] and The Libertine [Laurence Dunmore, 2005]. The Ogre was never seen in the UK and the soundtrack not released here, so this will be the first time many people will have heard this music. Originally composed for brass ensemble with saxophones, Wingates Band's performance is not hugely different from the original.

The album is completed with the Michael Nyman Band classics, In Re Don Giovanni and Chasing sheep is best left to shepherds from The Draughtman's Contract [Peter Greenaway, 1982], where the music sounds very different from the original performances. Michael Nyman says, 'the whole sound-world was transformed. Things like repeated rhythms which I originally gave to piano are punchier, edgier, more dangerous on cornets and trombones.'

Wingates Band was formed in 1873 by the members of the Bible Class of Wingates Independent Methodist Church in Westhoughton, Bolton, in response to a challenge from the members of Westhoughton Old Band, which had been in existence since 1858. By the turn of the century, led by legendary 'giant' of the British brass band movement Willaim Rimmer, Wingates had been turned into one of the top bands in the country. In 1906 the Band achieved national fame by winning the 'double': the British Open and the British National Championships. The following year Wingates astounded the brass band world by completing the double again. www.wingatesband.org.

Michael Nyman described it as 'a privilege' to work with Wingates. Although his music was very different from the kind that the players were used to, he said they 'picked up the style, especially the formality of the music, and it soon sounded second nature to them… I loved the spirit of the playing, the instant dedication and the energy in what is a very new sound world for me.'

Live Recording

The Symphonic Suite The Fenlands by the English composer Arthur Wills formed the pièce de résistance of the Cathedral Brass concert that took place on September 13, 2008 in the Koepelkerk in Leeuwarden. In this captivating and challenging composition, the composer reaches a beautiful synthesis between the brass band and its natural musical partner: the organ. The program also contains two rarely performed organ works by the English composer Percy Whitlock: a simple Folksong and a virtuoso Divertimento. The closing movement of Camille Saint-Saens Organ Symphony forms a finale to this set.
“Just as I am” is an arrangement of a song by Wilfred Heaton, a piece from the
Salvation Army repertoire. “Angels Watching Over Me”, also comes from the Salvation Army, but was recorded in the studio in 2006, here included as a special bonus track.
