FLUX - Lunar Saxophone Quartet

FLUX - Lunar Saxophone Quartet
ID: SIGCD227
CDs: 2
Type: CD
Subcollection: Saxophone

Flux is Signum s second disc with the contemporary music ensemble Lunar Saxophone Quartet. A saxophone quartet is by necessity a group that relies on new repertoire and compositions, lacking the historical treasure-trove of works available to groups such as string quartets. As a result LSQ have become a championing force for new music and compositions. This disc of the group s commissions combines the works of established composers such as Gabriel Jackson and Michael Nyman with others by contemporaries of the group a flux of styles and influences from a group who seek to create music that is accessible, without compromise.

Shared Ground is a set of works by the British composer Alec Roth, featuring several poems and sung texts by the Indian writer Vikram Seth. The title piece of the same name is inspired by Seth’s poetry following a decision to buy and live in the Old Rectory in Bemerton - the former home of the 17thcentury poet and priest George Herbert. Other works on the disc expand this idea of a shared home or dwelling, with Earthrise - the reflections of Apollo astronauts on viewing the planet from orbit - and Hymn to Gaia.

To hear the interlocking version of Shared Ground and Ponticelli, programme the tracks in the following sequence: 1 - 7 - 2 - 8 - 3 - 9 - 4 - 0 - 5 - q - 6

“I regard The Veil of the Temple as the supreme achievement of my life and the most important work that I have ever composed.” Sir John Tavener

Signum Records are proud to re-release the landmark recording of Sir John Tavener’s The Veil of the Temple at the start of what would have been Tavener’s 70th year.

This 2CD set captures the concert-version of this epic 8-hour work, composed to last through the night until dawn in the manner of the grand vigils of the Orthodox Church. Combining the psalms of a number of different religious, Tavener skillfully blends together a work that is truly all-encompasing in its scale and spiritual fervour.

Tamsin Waley-Cohen (violin) - Huw Watkins (piano)

Rising-star violinist Tamsin Waley-Cohen is joined by the eminent pianist-composer Huw Watkins in a diverse programme of works that were all influenced in different ways by the era in which they were composed. The works were conceived at four very different points in the composer’s lives - Debussy, at the end of his life, Respighi in the first flush of fame, Elgar, although not old, enjoying his last creative period, and Sibelius in his prime composing prolifically.
These four contrasting works were all composed as the Great War drew to a close, but none of them specifically attempts to conjure up images of the conflict, nor act as any kind of programmatic memorial to its victims. Rather, these works are all conceived as absolute music, albeit, in the case of the Elgar and Debussy sonatas, imbued with a melancholy regret that may have been a reflection of those tragic four years.
