Piano Concerto No. 2 in G minor, Op. 22

Emmanuel Despax is a rising star on the UK and international piano scene, who has performed at the Wigmore and Cadogan Halls in London, the Salle Gaveau and Louvre Auditorium in Paris, and with orchestras including the CBSO.

His debut concerto recording, with the Orpheus Sinfonia under Thomas Carroll, features the premiere recording of Stephen Goss’s Piano Concerto, inspired by the designs of Thomas Heatherwick (the work’s premiere performance was the first classical concert in which audiences were invited to bring their ipads and tablets, to watch an interactive display designed to accompany the music). The work is accompanied by two similarly expressive and characterful works, Saint-Saëns’ ever-popular Piano Concerto No.2 and Franck’s Variations symphoniques.

Petrushka

The real life marriage of two great concert pianists, Alessio Bax and Lucille Chung, has led to one of the leading piano duos of their generation. To cite the UK magazine Music and Arts, “Theirs is a marriage of wondrous colours and dextrous aplomb, subtly balanced to make a musical performance sound as one.”

Stavinsky’s Pétrouchka was originally arranged for four-hands by the composer as a rehearsal score for the Ballet Russes production of the same name, but in this stripped-down it brings Stravinsky’s melodic, rhythmic and harmonic inventiveness to the fore. Brahms’s 16 Waltzes Op.39 are an enchanting collection of Romantic miniatures that simultaneously nod to the musical lineage of the composer’s home in Vienna whilst asserting his own flair and individuality. The final four tangos by Piazzolla are a full of Argentine flair and vigour, and were arranged especially for this recording by Bax and Chung.

Mark Williams leads the Choir of the Jesus College Cambridge through an evocative selection of choral works inspired in varying ways by the songs of Solomon.

Songs of love have been written from the earliest records of human existence. None are more passionately ecstatic than the Song of Solomon, which occupies a unique place in the Holy Bible in both style and content. It contains lyric poems of love and courtship, as might have been sung at Jewish weddings. For Christians, these poems speak to the beauty of the union of Christ and his ‘bride’, the Church. The present collection presents a diverse group of choral works written between the 16th century and the present day, with most inspired by this unique sacred text.

The first release from the BBC National Orchestra of Wales’s inaugural Composer in Residence, Guto Pryderi Puw. Puw studied composition with composers John Pickard, Andrew Lewis and Pwyll ap Siôn. He first made an impact as a composer in 1995 when he won the Composer's Medal at the National Eisteddfod (and again in 1997). Since then he has received many commissions and performances while being much in demand as a composer at various festivals in the UK and abroad. His music is regularly broadcast on radio and television. He is the Chairman and Artistic Director of the Bangor New Music Festival, which has been running since 2000.

In 2005 his orchestral work, a BBC Radio 3 commission, 'Reservoirs', was nominated in the Large-Scale Composition category of the Royal Philharmonic Society Music Awards, and in February 2006 he was appointed as the first Resident Composer with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales to compose three new orchestral commissions. His 'Concerto for Oboe' won the BBC Radio 3 'Listeners Award' category at the 2007 British Composer Awards and the Proms commissioned piece '...unless I open the door...' won BBC Music Magazine's 'Best Proms Premiere' for its performance in 2007. In 2010 he won an award from the Thomas Ellis Memorial Fund to record his orchestral music on the Signum label. He is currently working on a concerto for violinist Madeleine Mitchell for 2014 and his opera Y Tŵr (‘The Tower’) commissioned by Music Theatre Wales for 2016.

A dual-language release in both Welsh and English, this release features a range of orchestral works inspired by stories and landscapes of Wales.

A. Vivaldi - The Four Seasons - Kati Debretzeni, violin, conductor - Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment

A. Vivaldi - The Four Seasons - Kati Debretzeni, violin, conductor - Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment
ID: SIGCD377
CDs: 1
Type: CD
Subcollection: Violin

With its vivid poetry and technical ingenuity, Vivaldi’s 'Four Seasons' was ground-breaking at the time of its composition and to this day remains as influential and transfixing as ever. In this recording, violinist Kati Debretzeni directs the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment based on the energetic, historically-informed performances given last February when, with renowned choreographer Henri Oguike, the OAE fused authentic performance with contemporary choreography.
The booklet includes a ‘Guided tour of the Four Seasons’, allowing listeners to follow the poetry that inspired Vivaldi as they hear the performances on the disc, including additional composer’s notes from Vivaldi’s own scores. Born in Transylvania, Kati Debretzeni studied with Ora Shiran and Baroque violin with Catherine Mackintosh and Walter Reiter at the Royal College of Music in London. Since the year 2000 she has led the English Baroque Soloists under Sir John Eliot Gardiner, and since 2008 is one of the leaders of the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, which she has directed and lead in the UK, Europe and the US. Kati features as soloist on two versions of Bach’s Brandenburg concertos, with the European Brandenburg Ensemble under Trevor Pinnock (Gramophone Award, 2008), and again with the English Baroque Soloists. She has directed from the violin various ensembles in Israel, Poland, Norway, Iceland and the UK, and teaches the Baroque and Classical violin at the Royal Conservatory of Music in The Hague.
