Akathist to The Derzhavnaya Icon of The Mother of God - The Moscow Churches’ Choir of Singers - Precentor Anatoly Kuleshov

Type: CD

1 CD, color booklet (44 pages) in Russian and in English with a narration on the history of the akathist and with the full text of the Praise to the Most Holy Mother of God.

This marvelous akathist was composed in the terrible times of Russian history. In 1917, on the 2 of March Emperor Nicholas II abdicated the throne, but that very day there happened an event that made many people recover their spirit. In the village of Kolomenskoe near Moscow a new icon of the Mother of God appeared, known as the «Derzhavnaya» icon. The Queen of heaven was depicted as an earthly queen there. In the years of cruel persecutions of the Church the icon didn’t cease to pour out the miraculous healings. Nowadays it still strengthens and consoles the believers, being one of the most loved and worshiped icons of the Mother of God.

St. Patriarch Tikhon took part in composing the Divine service and the akathist of Theotokos - the Queen and Protectress. The akathist is performed with reverence by the Moscow Churches’ Choir of Singers (Precentor Anatoly Kuleshov) in various chants and melodies, from classical Greek chant to severe monastic melody of the Sarov Hermitage.

Late Renaissance and Early Baroque

Firma Melodiya presents a recording of St Matthew Passion (2006), one of the most popular works of Russian academic music of the 21st century composed by Metropolitan Hilarion. In due course, this work will probably take a special place in the history of domestic music, but it has already been a source of inspiration for The Conductor (2012), a motion picture by Pavel Lungin, and performed over fifty times around the world.

Its composer Metropolitan Hilarion (Grigory Alfeyev) is a pries of the Russian Orthodox Church, a theologian and public figure, an author of fundamental studies on religious issues, and a Doctor of Philosophy of the University of Oxford. In 1984 to 1987 he studied at the composition department of the Moscow Conservatory under professor Alexei Nikolayev. Later he left music for an ecclesiastical career, but subsequently returned to composing.

The uniqueness of St Matthew Passion lies in the synthesis of musical traditions of West European baroque where the musical genre of passion sprang from, Orthodox church signing and Russian symphonic music of the 19th and 20th centuries. St Matthew Passion is intended for concert performance, but in the opinion of the musicologist and chancellor of the Moscow Conservatory Alexander Sokolov "this music leads a man to God through knowledge of God, to spiritual through soulful".

The featured recording was made in 2010 by the first performers of the Passion who are the Moscow Synodal Choir led by Alexei Puzakov and the Tchaikovsky Symphony Orchestra conducted by Vladimir Fedoseyev with the participation of young vocalists and prize-winners of international competitions Naira Asatrian, Olessya Petrova, Maxim Paster and Dmitri Beloselsky.

When Angels Make Music - Music instruments from 1594 in Freiberg Cathedral

When Angels Make Music - Music instruments from 1594 in Freiberg Cathedral
ID: RK2404-5
CDs: 2
Type: SACD
Subcollection: Chamber Ensemble

Thirty largely original instruments in the hands of music-making angels in Freiberg Cathedral are unique evidence of Saxon musical-instrument-making in the sixteenth century. Copies were made of the angels’ instruments - cornetts, trombones, shawms, triangle, tambourine, harps, citterns, violins and lutes - during the course of a research project. Their sound can be rediscovered on this CD of late-Renaissance instrumental and vocal works from Saxony. Musica Freybergensis is a hand-picked group of musicians chosen by Music Instrument Museum of Leipzig University and Raumklang for the purpose of practical research into the sound of the Freiberg instruments. Before making this recording a number of concerts were presented over the period of a year, including one in Freiberg Cathedral, giving the musicians time to break in the instruments, to become accustomed to them, and to discover their possibilities.
