Das Leipziger Vocalensemble, 1976 durch den jetzigen Thomaskantor Georg Christoph Biller und weitere ehemalige Thomaner gegründet, widmet sich neben der Pflege der Vokalwerke Johann Sebastian Bachs insbesondere der Aufführung selten zu hörender zeitgenössischer geistlicher Chormusik. Die Werke des Leipziger Komponisten Johannes Weyrauch (1897 - 1977), der in hohem Alter noch regen Anteil an der Arbeit des Leipziger Vocalensembles nahm, haben den Chor von Anfang an begleitet und geprägt. Weyrauchs Musik zeichnet sich aus durch Klarheit, Vermeidung alles Überflüssigen und Anwendung sparsamer, einfacher musikalischer Mittel. Vor allem im Spätwerk des Komponisten zeigt sich ein starkes meditatives Element.

The Choir of St Mary's Cathedral is unique in Scotland in maintaining daily choral services in the Anglican tradition, and enjoys an international reputation for its daily services, broadcasts, recordings, concerts, and tours. The Cathedral was the first in the United Kingdom to allow girls to join boys as trebles in 1978 and then, in 2006, to allow female altos to sing alongside countertenors in the choir. Appointed in 2008, Organist and Master of the Music Duncan Ferguson has been instrumental in establishing the choir's status as one of UK's foremost cathedral choirs, whose recording catalogue now includes some six discs on Delphian.
Celebrating his 50th birthday in 2012, Gabriel Jackson has had a long and close association with the Choir of St Mary's Cathedral. This is the choir's second disc of Jackson's choral music on Delphian, and under Ferguson's dynamic direction they present a sequence of recording premieres that centre on the florid Hymn to St Margaret of Scotland, which has been newly written for the choir. A fitting celebration for Jackson's half-century, the disc opens a window on the luminous sound-world of one of Britain's finest choral composers.

Kolekce: RenaissanceErst nach dem Tod des prunksüchtigen Herzogs Albert V. von Bayern im Jahre 1584 konnten die bereits 1559 in seinem Auftrag entstandenen Bußpsalmen-Motetten, die er zeitlebens jeder Öffentlichkeit entzog, gedruckt werden. Lasso wählte als übergreifende Idee die Ordnung nach den 8 Kirchentonarten; dafür fügte er den sieben Bußpsalmen einen weiteren Text hinzu, den 148. Psalm. Für diese CD wurden der 1., 3., 6. und 7. Bußpsalm ausgewählt. Die elf Sänger interpretieren diese überaus subtile Musik mit feiner Sensibilität, die melodischen Linien schweben gleichsam im Raum der romanischen Basilika des Klosters Lehnin. Als besonders reizvoll erweist sich die gemischt solistisch-chorische Besetzung des Ensembles. So entsteht ein Gesamtklang, in dem Individualität und Fülle verschmelzen und das Hören dieser CD zu einem meditativen Erlebnis wird. |

Rutter’s rare communicative gifts are given a special glow by the refulgent acoustic of Tewkesbury Abbey and the choir’s luminous singing.

Dietrich Buxtehudes Kantatenzyklus Membra Jesu Nostri (BuxWV 75) ist eines der außerordentlichsten Musikwerke des 17. Jahrhunderts. Anhand einer mittelalterlichen mystischen Textvorlage entwickelte der Lübecker Organist eine siebenteilige Passionsmeditation, die sich deutlich von der protestantischen Tradition der Betrachtung der Passion Christi abhebt. Jesu Membra Nostri ist eine Sammlung lateinischer Hymnen, die sich jeweils an ein Körperteil des am Kreuz hängenden Christus wenden, indem sie es stets mit einem Salve (gegrüßet) anreden. Ursprünglich wurden nur die fünf biblisch überlieferten Wunden angesprochen - Füße, Knie, Hände, Seit und das Antlitz - , später wurde die Sammlung um die separat entstandenen Strophen an die Brust und das Herz erweitert.
In der Einspielung der Lautten Compagney und der Capella Angelica ist der Kantatenzyklus umrahmt von Buxtehudes geistlichen Konzerten Herr, wenn ich nur dich hab (BuxWV 38) und Jesu, meines Lebens Leben (BuxWV 62), die ganz der verinnerlichten Geisteshaltung der „Membra Jesu Nostri“ entsprechen. |
