Collection: Brass Collection Subcollection: HornThe Prince Regent's Band (Richard Fomison, Richard Thomas, Anneke Scott, Phil Dale & Jeff Miller - saxhorns)
During the mid-nineteenth century the Distin Family blazed a trail across Europe and North America performing countless concerts and promoting new and exciting designs of brass instruments. thanks to a chance meeting with Adolphe Sax in Paris in 1844, they adopted the new valved brass instruments, and in particular the new saxhorn.
With The Celebrated Distin Family, period brass specialists The Prince Regent’s Band have recreated the lost Distin Family repertoire, performing on their unique collection of original saxhorns and other fascinating brass instruments of the period. |

Collection: Organ Collection Subcollection: OrchestreThe Philharmonia Orchestra is one of the world's great orchestras. Acknowledged as the UK's foremost musical pioneer, with an extraordinary recording legacy, the Philharmonia leads the field for its quality of playing, and for its innovative approach to audience development, residencies, music education and the use of new technologies in reaching a global audience. Together with its relationships with the world's most sought-after artists, most importantly its Principal Conductor and Artistic Advisor Esa-Pekka Salonen, the Philhamonia Orchestra is at the heart of British musical life.
Since September 2008 Salonen has been Principal Conductor and Artistic Advisor of the Philharmonia Orchestra. In his first season in this role he devised and led City of Dreams, a nine-month exploration of the music and culture of Vienna between 1900 and 1935. The project, which presented the music of Mahler, Schoenberg, Zemlinsky and Berg in its social and historical context, travelled to 18 cities across Europe, culminating in October 2009 with semi-staged performances of Berg's Wozzeck, with Simon Keenlyside in the title role. A series of recordings from the project is being released on the Philharmonia/Signum label, of which Gurrelieder is already available. |

All My Loving? The Films of Tony Palmer is the first book length study of a man who, in a career of over forty years, has directed and produced more than a hundred documentary and theatrical films, directed stage plays and operas, authored books and columns, hosted radio and television programs, and garnered dozens of awards, including multiple Italia Prizes (television’s most coveted award) - “the best director in television,” according to Ken Russell. Palmer takes us backstage to protest-and-acidfueled rock concerts with his friend John Lennon and Jimi Hendrix, glittering Las Vegas shows with Michael Crawford, legendary ballet performances with Margot Fonteyn and Rudolf Nureyev, memorable stage productions with Richard Burton and playwright John Osborne, politically-charged operas with John Adams and Peter Sellars, and music festivals with Benjamin Britten in Aldeburgh, Plácido Domingo in Salzburg, Yehudi Menuhin in London, Maria Callas in Paris and Valery Gergiev in St Petersburg’s Mariinsky Theatre in Russia. Palmer knew them all.
In the words of renowned film critic and historian David Thomson “Palmer has made an absolutely unique contribution to films about art and music. A genius sitting in our own backyard.” |
