150 years of English virginals music
Classical Periods: Baroque, Medieval, Renaissance

For this CD David has chosen a programme which reflects the social and political changes taking place in Britain through the 16th and 17th centuries, and which explores the different influences on the repertoire of the virginal, an instrument which was a major part of musical life at that time. Through a chronological survey, he also focuses our attention on the development of the instrument itself and how it adapted to the demands of the changing repertoire.

David makes particular use of the Arpichordium, or ‘bray’ stop: a batten parallel with the bridge, in which are fixed a set of metal hooks that touch the strings when the stop is engaged, resulting in a colourful ‘buzzing’ sound.

The instrument used in this recording was made by Ian Tucker, and is a Muselar virginal, an exact replica of one made in Antwerp in 1620, by Andreas Ruckers.

(English repertoire played on a Ruckers reproduction).

Music for organ from the Tower of London - Colm Carey

Music for organ from the Tower of London - Colm Carey

Popular organ repertoire on the new Letourneau organ in the chapel at the Tower of London. This is the first solo CD on the newly restored organ.

The present organ case in the Tower of London dates from 1699 when it was built under royal warrant by Bernhardt Schmidt for the Banqueting House, Whitehall. It was relocated several times, eventually coming to rest at the Tower’s chapel of St Peter ad Vincula. Over the following century it was rebuilt and enlarged on several occasions, and by 1999 this resulted in an organ some three times larger than that for which the original case had been designed. During the installation of this new organ by the Canadian organ builder Fernand Létourneau, the case was meticulously restored to its original dimensions and many decorative details were made to replace those lost over the centuries.

To show off this remarkable new instrument on its first commercial solo recording, Colm Carey has put together a wonderfully varied and attractive programme, first and foremost chosen to suit to the instrument’s character, but representing the best of British organ music as befits its location, and spanning 5 centuries.

A leading concert organist of the younger generation, Colm Carey offers a blend of fresh invention and technical finesse, establishing him as a remarkable and distinctive performer. Born in Ireland, Carey studied at the Royal Academy of Music in London with Nicholas Danby and David Titterington, where he read for a University of London BMus. He also gained the Dip.RAM, the Academy’s highest performance award, and later became Meaker Fellow. As winner of the prestigious Julius Isserlis Scholarship, he went on to study at the Conservatoire de Musique de Genève with Lionel Rogg, where he won the ‘Premier Prix de Virtuosité avec Distinction’ on completion of his course. He subsequently came third and won the Audience Prize at the St. Albans International Competition.
Since then Colm has performed in France, Germany, Switzerland, Sweden, Italy, Denmark, Canada, the USA, Australia and throughout Britain and Ireland. His repertoire embraces all the major traditions, from the French Classical School and the German Baroque to the great symphonic tradition of the nineteenth century, and as a keen exponent of contemporary music he has given first performances of new works by Lionel Rogg, Roderick Williams, Ruth Byrchmore and Andrew Johnstone.

3 -10 Paul Sherman, double bass / Louise Mott, mezzo-soprano

This CD additionally features the voice of Louise Mott in The Sibyl of Cumae, a brilliant young singer who has already sung principal roles with Almeida, Opera Group, ENO, WNO and BBC Proms. Her recordings include Marthe in Schumann’s Scenes from Goethe’s Faust under Philippe Herreweghe for Harmonia Mundi. The double-bassist Paul Sherman, principal with ECO and Opus 20, also joins the group for this work.

Each work occupies its own highly individual territory. But the works have in common an impulse to embrace wider, non-musical concerns and programmes. For James Wood, Crying Bird, Echoing Star brings together two long-held fascinations, namely birdsong and the star patterns of the constellations. Gordon McPherson writes that his piece is a call to young composers to ask themselves what’s really important to their own writing. Edward Dudley Hughes’s work evokes the semi-mythical Sibyl of Cumae’s possession by the god Apollo and her arduous spirit journeys to the underworld. Rowland Sutherland’s work explores the sounds and colours of distant places as they invigorate the imagination. Finally, Rolf Hind’s The Horse Sacrifice is inspired by a crucial and elaborate part of Vedic (early Hindu) ritual.

The New Music Players was founded by the composer Edward Dudley Hughes and is one of the most engaging of the new independent contemporary classical ensembles. It has made several commercial CDs, worked with leading composers, broadcast many times on BBC Radio 3, appeared at major UK Festivals, toured in Europe and is currently Ensemble-In-Residence at the University of York.

The recording and commissions were supported by a grant from the Foundation for Sport and the Arts.

17th & 18th century French harpsichord music on a Ruckers reproduction instrument.

On this CD David Pollock has chosen a programme that reveals much of the evolution of the French tradition of harpsichord music. It is recorded on a copy of a harpsichord made in 1636 by Andreas Ruckers and given a characteristic ravalement by Henri Hemsch in 1763. It was built by Anne and Ian Tucker, and as well as the characteristic sound of the instrument, it recreates the decorative scheme: the pastoral scene on the interior of the lid dates from before the ravalement, while the mythological scenes painted on the exterior are eighteenth century. The original - still playable - is thought to have belonged to the House of Savoy until 1900, and now forms part of the Cobbe Collection at Hatchlands.

For the music David has chosen a programme that reveals much of the evolution of the diverse French harpsichord tradition, beginning with Jacques Champion de Chambonnières, one of the most important early French harpsichordists, whose influence spread beyond Paris, and moving through his protegés Couperin (Louis) and D’Anglebert, whose music synthesised the various musical styles spreading across the continent, helping to create a definitive French sound. Le Roux and Francois Couperin further developed the style, exploring the harpsichord’s emotional and sonorous capabilities, and Royer, who “brings up the rear” shows that the style had become refined and distinctive in its ornamentation, its expressiveness, its structure and its technique.

This is the Galeazzi Ensemble's 2nd recording on London Independent and follows on from the enormous success, both critically and commercially, of their first recording "The Age of Elegance".

Like their previous CD, this recording presents works by familiar faces - Schubert’s sumptuous string trio and Mozart’s flute quartet, written purely for money - but also introduces us to some less celebrated figures such as Gyrowetz, the young pretender to Mozart’s symphonic genius whose dainty quartet looks very much backwards into the classical era, Dittersdorf, the colourful favourite of the Austrian Empress, who effortlessly explores the nuances of string writing with energy and style, and Hoffmeister, the entrepreneur of the musical world - publisher, agent and banker - whose quartet is full of musical surprises!
