Recorded in the Great Hall of the Moscow Conservatoire 29.09.2001
The name of Edward Elgar is associated with the renascence of the English music at the close of 19th and beginning of 20th century. Elgar's music combines classical and romantic influences of various cultures. Despite the power and variety of those influences Elgar, like Cesar Frank or Sergei Taneev, succeeded in creating his own bright individual style. In Concerto for solo violin and full orchestra (op.61, 1910) the very concept of "the symphony for violin and orchestra" reminds of Johannes Brams. The concerto is a major work in all respects. It sounds for over 45 minutes and the part of violin is rich and diverse both as a virtuoso and cantilena work. The main theme of the Concerto, a broken and sad monologue, represents an outstanding artistic innovation by Elgar. An inimitable individual theme comes out of seemingly familiar romantic formulas. Its dramatic tensity is combined with melancholy and meditation. The first movement seems rather slow. The contrast in tempo of the sonata-kind Allegro and the second part is smoothed out. The theme of the second movement is a version of the main theme of the concerto and both themes sound in the finale (Frank uses the same device quite frequently). Thus the whole composition assumes the characteristics of a large one-part poem. A traditional cadence is not be found in the first movement, it is transferred to the central part of the finale.

The Ninth Symphony by Dvorák presents a four-movement symphonic cycle with a slow second movement, followed by a Scherzo. The Sonata Allegro of the first movement is preceded by a small declamatory introduction of an epical quality, in which the strenuous calls of the horns are sounded out flaringly. The main theme of the Sonata Allegro is based on a rhythmically syncopated melodic figure, derived from Negro songs. The second movement of the symphony was initially titled “Legend,” since its images were aroused by the impressions from the composer’s familiarization with Longfellow’s long poem “Hiawatha”. However, many researchers of Dvorák’s music notice within the music of this movement a feeling of longing for his homeland. The third movement, presenting a rapid Scherzo, is likewise permeated with an unusual melodic and rhythmic individuality.

The conductor Nikolai Anosov was Rozhdestvensky’s father. His interpretations are distinguished by precise attention to detail and by meticulousness, as demonstrated in this performance of “From the New World”. Featuring David Oistrakh, these recordings are excellent quality and taken from 1942 & 1967.

Firma Melodiya presents another album dedicated to one of the greatest violinists of the 20th century, Leonid Kogan.

An unusual pairing of recordings realized in the late 1960s and early 1970s makes this release particularly attractive. Two concertos by J S Bach, a composer whose music played a significant part in the violinist’s repertoire (the concerto for two violins and orchestra was recorded together with Pavel Kogan, Leonid’s son and a talented violinist ad conductor), are here along with a piece from a different era.

The violin concerto by Alban Berg, a representative of the Second Viennese School, is one of the best creations of the composer of Wozzeck. The concerto, which became the composer’s last work, was dedicated “To the memory of an angel” (Alma Mahler’s daughter who died at an early age), combined the expression of the musical language with poignant lyrical parts and ended in the sounds of Bach’s chorale.

Leonid Kogan was the only performer of Berg’s concerto in the former USSR. The complexity of the piece was an obstacle for many celebrated violinists. His interpretation still captivates with its emotional expressiveness and in-depth comprehension of the concept and form of the concerto.

Firma Melodiya presents recordings of Joseph Haydn’s and Edward Elgar’s violin concertos performed by Igor Oistrakh.

Igor Oistrakh is the son of David Oistrakh, one of the greatest violinists of the 20th century. He studied violin under famous teacher Pyotr Stoliarsky, graduated from the conservatory and finished his

post-graduate course under his father. Since he was young his play was distinguished with high technical mastery and bright individuality without copying his father’s style. Suffice it to mention his triumphs at the international competitions in Budapest in 1949 and Poznan in 1952, his appearances with some of the best musicians of the century such as Pablo Casals, Yehudi Menuhin, Leonid Kogan and Vladimir Spivakov, and his work with the leading conductors such as Herbert von Karajan, Otto Klemperer, Eugene Ormandy, Carlo Maria Giulini, Georg Solti, Lorin Maazel, Zubin Mehta, Evgeny Svetlanov and Gennady Rozhdestvensky.

Igor Oistrakh was the first Soviet violinist to play the Violin Concerto by Edward Elgar, a prominent English composer who raised national music to the global level for the first time in two hundred years. Dedicated to violinist Fritz Kreisler, the concerto unveils the violin’s rich virtuosic, timbre and emotional potential and is a fertile ground for a true master of violin performing art. Igor Oistrakh is accompanied by the Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra led by talented violinist and conductor Valentin Zhuk.

The album also features Joseph Haydn’s Double Concerto for violin and piano. Igor Oistrakh performs it together with Natalia Zertsalova, his long-standing ensemble partner and a pupil of Yakov Flier.
