The Ninth Symphony by Dvorák presents a four-movement symphonic cycle with a slow second movement, followed by a Scherzo. The Sonata Allegro of the first movement is preceded by a small declamatory introduction of an epical quality, in which the strenuous calls of the horns are sounded out flaringly. The main theme of the Sonata Allegro is based on a rhythmically syncopated melodic figure, derived from Negro songs. The second movement of the symphony was initially titled “Legend,” since its images were aroused by the impressions from the composer’s familiarization with Longfellow’s long poem “Hiawatha”. However, many researchers of Dvorák’s music notice within the music of this movement a feeling of longing for his homeland. The third movement, presenting a rapid Scherzo, is likewise permeated with an unusual melodic and rhythmic individuality.

The conductor Nikolai Anosov was Rozhdestvensky’s father. His interpretations are distinguished by precise attention to detail and by meticulousness, as demonstrated in this performance of “From the New World”. Featuring David Oistrakh, these recordings are excellent quality and taken from 1942 & 1967.

Firma Melodiya presents another album dedicated to one of the greatest violinists of the 20th century, Leonid Kogan.

An unusual pairing of recordings realized in the late 1960s and early 1970s makes this release particularly attractive. Two concertos by J S Bach, a composer whose music played a significant part in the violinist’s repertoire (the concerto for two violins and orchestra was recorded together with Pavel Kogan, Leonid’s son and a talented violinist ad conductor), are here along with a piece from a different era.

The violin concerto by Alban Berg, a representative of the Second Viennese School, is one of the best creations of the composer of Wozzeck. The concerto, which became the composer’s last work, was dedicated “To the memory of an angel” (Alma Mahler’s daughter who died at an early age), combined the expression of the musical language with poignant lyrical parts and ended in the sounds of Bach’s chorale.

Leonid Kogan was the only performer of Berg’s concerto in the former USSR. The complexity of the piece was an obstacle for many celebrated violinists. His interpretation still captivates with its emotional expressiveness and in-depth comprehension of the concept and form of the concerto.

Firma Melodiya presents recordings of Joseph Haydn’s and Edward Elgar’s violin concertos performed by Igor Oistrakh.

Igor Oistrakh is the son of David Oistrakh, one of the greatest violinists of the 20th century. He studied violin under famous teacher Pyotr Stoliarsky, graduated from the conservatory and finished his

post-graduate course under his father. Since he was young his play was distinguished with high technical mastery and bright individuality without copying his father’s style. Suffice it to mention his triumphs at the international competitions in Budapest in 1949 and Poznan in 1952, his appearances with some of the best musicians of the century such as Pablo Casals, Yehudi Menuhin, Leonid Kogan and Vladimir Spivakov, and his work with the leading conductors such as Herbert von Karajan, Otto Klemperer, Eugene Ormandy, Carlo Maria Giulini, Georg Solti, Lorin Maazel, Zubin Mehta, Evgeny Svetlanov and Gennady Rozhdestvensky.

Igor Oistrakh was the first Soviet violinist to play the Violin Concerto by Edward Elgar, a prominent English composer who raised national music to the global level for the first time in two hundred years. Dedicated to violinist Fritz Kreisler, the concerto unveils the violin’s rich virtuosic, timbre and emotional potential and is a fertile ground for a true master of violin performing art. Igor Oistrakh is accompanied by the Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra led by talented violinist and conductor Valentin Zhuk.

The album also features Joseph Haydn’s Double Concerto for violin and piano. Igor Oistrakh performs it together with Natalia Zertsalova, his long-standing ensemble partner and a pupil of Yakov Flier.

The great violinist David Oistrakh realised his ambition to conduct in 1961and from then until his last concert in Moscow in 1974, combined solo and conducting work. A Viennese newspaper wrote “A world-known violinist being a top-class conductor at the same time is an extraordinary phenomenon.”

It was in 1961 when the great violinist Oistrakh realized his old dream of conducting for the first time. Since then, until his last concert in Moscow in October 1974, where Brahms’s second symphony was performed, the musician combined solo and conducting work appearing to his audiences as a conductor of the Orchestra of Moscow Philharmonic Society, Big Symphony Orchestra of All - Union Radio, and with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, Teatro alla Scala Orchestra and other celebrated collectives. “A world - known violinist being a top class conductor at the same time is an extraordinary phenomenon. And David Oistrakh is a remarkable conductor,” wrote one of the Viennese newspapers in 1966. This Firma Melodiya release features compositions by Édouard Lalo (Symphonie espagnole), Hector Berlioz (Harold in Italy) and Johannes Brahms (Violin concerto in D major, Op. 77 Symphony No. 2 in D major, Op. 73) performed by the Moscow Radio Symphony Orchestra and the Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by David Oistrakh.

The 5-CD set features Vladimir Spivakov as both a violinist and conductor on recordings made in 1970s to 1990s. That period of performing activity and creation of the Moscow Virtuosi was a bright phase in the maestro’s career leaving an unforgettable trace in performing arts of this country and the world. The chamber pieces by Schubert, Locatelli, Franck, Debussy, Ravel, Milhaud, Bartók and Prokofiev, and virtuosic numbers by Paganini, Wieniawski and Saint-Saëns were recorded with remarkable pianists such as Viktoria Postnikova and Boris Bekhterev; one of the CDs is dedicated to Mozart (Symphony No. 28 and the Coronation Mass) while another is dedicated to Rodion Shchedrin (Carmen Suite and also Music for the Town of Köthen written especially for Spivakov).
Spivakov’s earlier unreleased concert recordings at the 4th International Tchaikovsky Competition in 1970 are of particular interest. The violinist was awarded the second prize and a silver medal at the competition for his performance of Sibelius’s and Tchaikovsky’s violin concertos, and Tchaikovsky’s, Sarasate’s and Shchedrin’s pieces.

"On stage, Oistrakh produces an impression of a colossus. He firmly stands on the ground, he holds his violin proudly, and he creates music that finds expression in an endless stream of beauty and grace", wrote the great violin player Isaac Stern. Among the numerous famous performers the 20th century gave to the world, David Oistrakh ranks especially high. "… one of the really great violinists of our time. Oistrakh is great not because he is a virtuoso, but because he is a genuine, inspired musician," wrote the press during his first coming to the United States in 1955. Oistrakh had to play the very first concert of that tour on the same day with performances of Nathan Milstein and Mischa Elman (Joseph Szigeti played on the same day at another venue in New York). Fritz Kreisler who was in the house expressed his admiration for Oistrakh after the concert. Firma Melodiya presents a set of recordings by the great musician of this country. Oistrakh recorded violin concertos by Bach, Mozart, Viotti, Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, Brahms, Dvorak, and Taneyev in the 1950s and 1960s in the prime of his performing career jointly with some of the best conductors of the previous century such as Nikolai Malko, Herbert von Karajan, Alexander Gauk, Kirill Kondrashin and Gennady Rozhdestvensky. The performances of Brahms's and Franck's sonatas by David Oistrakh and Sviatoslav Richter also featured in this set once was unanimously recognized by domestic and foreign audiences as one of the best achievements of the 20th century in the field of chamber music.
