Firma Melodiya presents a recording of instrumental concertos by Antonio Vivaldi.

The Italian composer went down in history as an outstanding master of baroque concerto. His legacy includes over 500 concertos (about half of them composed for violin), which combine composing and virtuosic mastership with a truly Italian temperament, strict orderliness of the whole with inexhaustible inspiration and ingenuity. Vivaldi adopted a three-movement model of concerto, but even his most conventionally built works almost always conceal a surprise - an unusual structure of a movement, sudden modulation, a striking harmonic turn, and play of Forte and Piano shades. Just as it was the case with Bach, Vivaldi was sunk into oblivion for almost two centuries, and only in the 20th century his music came out to the foreground of world culture.

Vivaldi:
Oboe Concerto in A minor, RV461
Concerto for Violin & Viola da gamba, 'La maggiore' RV546
Concerto in E minor, RV 278
Cello Concerto in B minor, RV424
Concerto for Violin & Cello in B flat minor, RV 547
Flute Concerto, Op. 10 No. 2 in G minor, RV 439 'La notte'

Antonio Vivaldi’s concertos are performed by the prominent representatives of domestic music art Oleg Kagan (violin), Natalia Gutman (cello), Evgeny Nepalo (oboe) and Albert Gofman (flute), and conducted by Rudolf Barshai and Lev Markiz, who opened the style of chamber performance of baroque music for the Soviet audience. The Night concerto features an ensemble of soloists of the Moscow Philharmonic Society led by David Oistrakh.

Firma Melodiya presents an album of the remarkable violinist Liana Isakadze.

At the age of nine, while a pupil of the Tbilisi music school for gifted children, Liana Isakadze performed with a symphony orchestra for the first time, received first prize at the Trans-Caucasian Competition of Violinists at twelve, and two years later the second prize at the All-Union Competition of Performing Musicians in Moscow where she was allowed to participate despite her young age.

She was then admitted to the Moscow Conservatory without examinations, where she studied under David Oistrakh. Isakadze was awarded a Grand Prix of the at the Marguerite Long and Jacques Thibaud International Competition in Paris in 1965, the first prize at the Jean Sibelius International Competition in Helsinki and the third prize at the 4th Tchaikovsky International Competition in Moscow in 1970.

Liana Isakadze’s recordings of the concertos by Jean Sibelius and Arnold Schoenberg, made in the early 1980s with the USSR State Academic Symphony Orchestra conducted by young maestro Alexander Lazarev (he subsequently headed the Bolshoi Theatre), unveil the brightest features of the violinist’s performing style.

While the first of the concertos is very popular among all famous musicians (the jury of the Sibelius Competition awarded her a special prize for its performance), Schoenberg’s concerto is an example of Liana Isakadze artistic courage - she was and still is the only violinist in this country who included this work in her repertoire.

Schoenberg:
Violin Concerto, Op. 36

Sibelius:
Violin Concerto in D minor, Op. 47

The Ninth Symphony by Dvorák presents a four-movement symphonic cycle with a slow second movement, followed by a Scherzo. The Sonata Allegro of the first movement is preceded by a small declamatory introduction of an epical quality, in which the strenuous calls of the horns are sounded out flaringly. The main theme of the Sonata Allegro is based on a rhythmically syncopated melodic figure, derived from Negro songs. The second movement of the symphony was initially titled “Legend,” since its images were aroused by the impressions from the composer’s familiarization with Longfellow’s long poem “Hiawatha”. However, many researchers of Dvorák’s music notice within the music of this movement a feeling of longing for his homeland. The third movement, presenting a rapid Scherzo, is likewise permeated with an unusual melodic and rhythmic individuality.

The conductor Nikolai Anosov was Rozhdestvensky’s father. His interpretations are distinguished by precise attention to detail and by meticulousness, as demonstrated in this performance of “From the New World”. Featuring David Oistrakh, these recordings are excellent quality and taken from 1942 & 1967.

Firma Melodiya presents another album dedicated to one of the greatest violinists of the 20th century, Leonid Kogan.

An unusual pairing of recordings realized in the late 1960s and early 1970s makes this release particularly attractive. Two concertos by J S Bach, a composer whose music played a significant part in the violinist’s repertoire (the concerto for two violins and orchestra was recorded together with Pavel Kogan, Leonid’s son and a talented violinist ad conductor), are here along with a piece from a different era.

The violin concerto by Alban Berg, a representative of the Second Viennese School, is one of the best creations of the composer of Wozzeck. The concerto, which became the composer’s last work, was dedicated “To the memory of an angel” (Alma Mahler’s daughter who died at an early age), combined the expression of the musical language with poignant lyrical parts and ended in the sounds of Bach’s chorale.

Leonid Kogan was the only performer of Berg’s concerto in the former USSR. The complexity of the piece was an obstacle for many celebrated violinists. His interpretation still captivates with its emotional expressiveness and in-depth comprehension of the concept and form of the concerto.

Firma Melodiya presents recordings of Joseph Haydn’s and Edward Elgar’s violin concertos performed by Igor Oistrakh.

Igor Oistrakh is the son of David Oistrakh, one of the greatest violinists of the 20th century. He studied violin under famous teacher Pyotr Stoliarsky, graduated from the conservatory and finished his

post-graduate course under his father. Since he was young his play was distinguished with high technical mastery and bright individuality without copying his father’s style. Suffice it to mention his triumphs at the international competitions in Budapest in 1949 and Poznan in 1952, his appearances with some of the best musicians of the century such as Pablo Casals, Yehudi Menuhin, Leonid Kogan and Vladimir Spivakov, and his work with the leading conductors such as Herbert von Karajan, Otto Klemperer, Eugene Ormandy, Carlo Maria Giulini, Georg Solti, Lorin Maazel, Zubin Mehta, Evgeny Svetlanov and Gennady Rozhdestvensky.

Igor Oistrakh was the first Soviet violinist to play the Violin Concerto by Edward Elgar, a prominent English composer who raised national music to the global level for the first time in two hundred years. Dedicated to violinist Fritz Kreisler, the concerto unveils the violin’s rich virtuosic, timbre and emotional potential and is a fertile ground for a true master of violin performing art. Igor Oistrakh is accompanied by the Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra led by talented violinist and conductor Valentin Zhuk.

The album also features Joseph Haydn’s Double Concerto for violin and piano. Igor Oistrakh performs it together with Natalia Zertsalova, his long-standing ensemble partner and a pupil of Yakov Flier.
