Firma Melodiya presents a record of chamber music by Carl Maria von Weber, Robert Schumann, Johannes Brahms and Alban Berg performed by leading Russian musicians of the 1980s. Anatoly Kamyshev received the second award at the 1979 Soviet national contest of winders; he was a soloist of leading Moscow orchestras, performed with solo and ensemble programs, including a number of concerts with Sviatoslav Richter at the December Nights festival. After Andrei Gavrilov's convincing victory at the International Tchaikovsky Competition (1974, first award) he became world famous. Celloist Ivan Monighetti was one of the best disciples of Mstislav Rostropovich (at the same 1974 International Tchaikovsky Competition he received the second award). A renowned master of contemporary music performance, he is also known for his interpretations of Baroque and Classicism works; romantic music was also abundant in his programs.

Recorded live at the Small Hall of the Moscow Conservatory on September 29, 2016.

Firma Melodiya presents Low Strings, the first release from the Melodiya Apriori series.
For the past twenty-five years, a Russian label hasn’t released a project as uncommon and tricky as this. It is absolutely beyond the conventional notion of “chamber music recording,” neither by instrumental lineup (a viola, a cello and a double bass - it’s hardly the most advantageous of combinations that coincides lay belief), nor by selection of the music genres and styles. Matthew Locke, a representative of early English Baroque, Beethoven with his comic “eyeglasses” duet, his contemporary Bernhard Romberg, and next to them Alfred Schnittke, Vladimir Ryabov and composers of West European avant-garde with electronics attached.
The artistic will of the performers is perhaps the principal consolidating point of the album. It first of all applies to violist, organizer and enlightener Serge Poltavsky who united the effort of cellist Evgeny Rumyantsev, double bass player Grigory Krotenko (his role in the recording of the album is one of the leading ones) and sound engineer of the Moscow Conservatory and creator of the single sonic space of the Low Strings Mikhail Spassky.
It is also gratifying to hear not a distilled studio work, but live concert sound recorded at the Small Hall of the Moscow Conservatory in 2016. So, Melodiya, as it did many years ago, documents the recent past again. The fact itself makes us confident that this recording will find its listener.

Lubotsky Trio: Mark Lubotsky (violin), Ferdinand Erblich (viola), Olga Dowbusch-Lubotsky (cello)

Firma Melodiya presents a rarity of Russian chamber music, string quartets by Sergei Taneyev performed by Lubotsky Trio. In the early 20th century, they called Taneyev “musical conscience of Moscow.” Tchaikovsky’s best student and friend, the first recipient of the Big Gold Medal of the Moscow Conservatory, and a teacher of Rachmaninoff, Scriabin and other famous composers, Taneyev proved to be an outstanding pianist, composer, educator and music theorist.
A true master of polyphonic composition and a fine ensemble performer, Taneyev devoted special attention to thematic development, vibrant voiceleading, subtle palette of strokes, and sought to find an ideal balance between emotional and rational in music. The chamber and instrumental genres were perhaps the ones that answered his artistic demands to the greatest extent.
Two string trios - E flat major, Op. 31, and B minor (no opus) - on this album belong to the 1910’s, the last period of Taneyev’s life. The latter one remained unfinished and was published many years after the composer’s death.
Taneyev’s trios are performed by Mark Lubotsky, a remarkable violinist and representative of the Russian performing school, and his trio composed of Mark Lubotsky, German violist Ferdinand Erblich and cellist Olga Dowbusch-Lubotsky. A graduate of the Moscow Conservatory, a student of Abram Yampolsky and David Oistrakh, and a prize-winner of the 1st Tchaikovsky International Competition in 1958, Mark Lubotsky now resides in Germany and still combines his performing career with teaching.
The recording was made in Germany in 2015, the year of the 100th anniversary of the prominent Russian composer’s death.

Jazz

Charles Mingus once said “Making the simple complicated is
commonplace; making the complicated simple, that’s creativity”. This tends to describe our philosophy for this CD. The majority of the original compositions on this CD are based on the chord changes from well known works taken from the classical repertoire. One thing I can assure you is that this CD is nothing like the old “Bach meets Jazz” idea. For these pieces we applied the same concept used by jazz musicians during the Be Bop era where new melodies were applied to existing chord progressions. The major difference is that instead of sourcing our chord changes from songs out of the American songbook tradition we opted to explore the European classical music tradition for our harmony. During the preparation for this recording we had a great time playing with the endless possibilities provided us by the old masters and enjoyed looking for simple ways to transpose these rich harmonies into the language of jazz.

The Andrew Read Trio
The trio's first CD "Live in de Tor" and the follow up "The Andrew Read Trio - A2B" were received well by both the public and the press. The CD "Winter of my Dreams" featuring guest vocalist Lils Mackintosh and Sax player Wouter Kiers was a success generating substantial international sales. In 2009 The Andrew Read Trio signed with the Dutch label Aliud Records. The first release under this new contract is due for release December 2010.

The Fournier Trio bring new life and vitality to these two trios, Mendelssohn’s only output in the genre, that arguably represent the very pinnacle of his select chamber output.
