Subcollection: CelloThe F major ’cello/piano Strauss sonata belongs to his youth and, together with the Eb violin sonata of a few years later, is a manifestation of adolescent high spirits. (For this reason it was high time we committed this to disc sooner rather than later.) His father Franz was a horn player in the Munich Opera Orchestra and his mother was an heiress of a famous brewing family so it was through his father he grew up steeped in the prevailing musical atmosphere. Franz Strauss was a musical conservative and this, perhaps, is why his son’s early works adhere so strongly to classical compositional procedure. Despite the obvious influences of Mendelssohn, and especially Brahms, there is nonetheless an individual voice from the outset characterized by a fleetness of touch and sense of the theatrical which pre-echo his astonishing achievements in the field of Opera. |

Wenn sich Schneeflöckchen leise rieselnd ans Fenster setzt, die Glocken süß erklingen und am Baum die Lichter brennen, dann ist - so verheißen es die Lieder - Weihnachten. Üblicherweise hören wir Weihnachtslieder als Klangkulisse auf dem Weihnachtsmarkt oder in der Schnäppchen-Ecke im Kaufhaus. Verkaufsstrategie ist hier: weichgespülte Melodie. Doch spätestens am Nikolaustag haben wir diese Hintergrundsmusik satt.
Auf der Raumklang-CD „Engelslicht und Dornenschatten“ mit neunzehn ausgewählten Weihnachtsliedern kann und muss man hinhören. Die zum Teil altbekannten Lieder kommen uns dabei merkwürdig neu zu Ohren. Indem Christine Maria Rembeck ihnen nachlauscht, die Melodie nur in kleinen Nuancen verändert, einzelne Textpassagen herausgreift und sie durch ihre eigene Klavierbegleitung neu interpretiert. Engelsgleich berührt uns der Gesang Christine Maria Rembecks, eingebettet in das breite Klangsprektrum des Klaviers und ergänzt durch die warmen Celloklänge Emilia Gliozzis.

In Basque the word Hauskor refers to that which potentially has the quality of breaking itself up into dust thanks to the inner dynamism of the material after which it is named. Thus comes the initial idea of the piece: eight cellists who, because of their new position in space, dim and blur the orchestral convention, trickling what seemed to be a homogeneous group into separate voices which end up confronting the wholeness from which they spring. It is the threshold of a conflict, and over this threshold leans and balances itself what could be alluded to as the production of sounds.
Ortzi Isilak
Ramon Lazkano took two quotations from Nietzsche as the thought and the expression of the sound environment from which the musical idea slowly emerges. These two references may be read philosophically and artistically but can also plainly allude to a certain figurative affinity with the contents of the work.
Ilunkor
The five linked up sections of Ilunkor seek after the mineral and earthly ideas which were at the onset of their being designed. Carving sounds, creating volumes and crests out of silence, saturating harmony and carrying dynamics and ranges to extremes, conceiving shape as a maze of breakings and windows and time as an expanded dimension…
