Kabaivanska has made a selection of crown performances in her artistic career. Pancho Vladigerov, a pianist, composer and pedagogue, is one of the most outstanding personalities in the history of Bulgarian musical culture. The CD is dedicated to the 100th anniversary of his birth and includes a selection of his most highly praised works. All of them are performed by the Bulgarian National Radio Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Alexander Vladigerov, the composer's son and one of the greatest promoters of his vast creative output. The compositions presented in this programme were created during the 90ies of the last century and illustrate the composer's sensitivity and confession. His messages to the public are emotional, especially as far as Fahrenheit 451 Symphonic Suite from the Ballet is concerned. The other work is SentiMetal Concerto for Violoncello and Orchestra, one of the composer's most outspokenly lyrical works. A little sentiment, a little metal, this is an explanation, characteristic of the author's paradoxical thinking and sense of humour. This work, commissioned by the Dutch Radio NOS expresses the author's evolution in style, his sound and timbre diversity, virtuosity, dynamics, and fantasy.

Dimitar Tapkoff was born in Sofia in 1929. He graduated in composition under the great Bulgarian composer Marin Goleminov. He has worked in succession in the Bulgarian National Radio, Sofia National Opera, Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, the State Academy of Music, the Ministry of Culture. Currently he is Professor in composition at the Academy of Music and Dance Art in Plovdiv, and Director of the Sofia Music Weeks International Music Festival.
Tapkoff began writing music when the post-war avant-guard was fully embraced by a part of the Bulgarian composers, while others supported the national art, and still others followed the traditions of classical "modern". He is closest to the third group and admits that: "I would not say that I am a champion of a modern concept about music. I claim that I stand behind a music concept of my own, no matter what the fashionable trends are." He has always stressed on the possibility to use well-known structures and forms, at the same time incorporating music, which is close to the contemporary listener. His works have often been performed in Bulgaria and abroad. Tapkoff is holder of a number of home and international distinctions, among which the First Prize of the International Composer's Rostrum in Paris '76 for his Peace Cantata. He has composed works in different genres: concertos, overtures, symphonies, solo and choir songs, etc.

The experts define Stefan Elenkov (1937-97) as "a bass with a timbre rich in overtones and voice with piercing power". These qualities combined with his priceless training with Prof. Christo Brambarov, his further studies in Palermo and the great experience on the stage place him amongst the most stunning opera singers. His career was connected mostly with the Sofia Opera House (1966-97). But Elenkov had also sang as guest-artist in numerous famous opera theatres: the Metropolitan Opera in New York, La Scala in Milan, the State Opera Theatre in Vienna, Teatro del Liceo in Barcelona, Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow, in opera performances in Switzerland, Italy, Germany, Israel, Brasil, France, the USA, etc. His repertoire included all the big bass parts: Mephistopheles from Faust (Gounod), Fiesco from Simon Boccanegra (Verdi), Khan Kontchak from Prince Igor (Borodin), Prince Khovansky and Dossifey from Khovanshchina (Mussorgsky), King Philip and the Inquisitor from Don Carlos (Verdi) and many others. Some of them are included in this CD. The recordings were made in different periods of his rich artistic career but the constant trends in all of them are his incredibly beautiful voice, his high level of professionalism and captivating artistry.

The second CD of the series presenting the contemporary Bulgarian composers, project of the Soros Center for the Arts, includes music by five representatives of three generations of tonal masters. Their compositions demonstrate a rich palette of ideas and aesthetic preferences, so characteristic of the Bulgarian school from the last three decades of the 20th century. Alexander Tanev, known for his excellent choral works and cantatas, often combines in his symphonic works academic principles of construction with the most modern resources of our century, while the younger Alexander Kandov looks for a new expressiveness and has directed himself to original themes in his symphonic works. Simeon Pironkoff's Night Music is among the author's most representative and bright opuses, appealing to the listener with the refined sound and elegant melodic line. The same can be said about the Fantasia by Plamen Djouroff, a prominent Bulgarian composer and conductor. Variations and Fugue on a Theme by Haendel are representative of Krassimir Kyurkchiiski's art of composing. The author demonstrates his mastery of handling the Baroque forms, introducing in them the outlook and interpretation of a contemporary musician. |

The first half of the 20th century marks the appearance of a number of talented and prolific composers and musicians in Bulgarian musical culture. One of them is Petko Stainov (1986-1977) - a composer, pedagogue, and musical activist. Petko Stainov was born in Kazanlak, which was then famous for its music traditions. After hurting one of his eyes, he lost his sight completely when he was 11. In 1915 he graduated from the Institute for the Blind in Sofia. Then he studied piano with Andrei Stoyanov and made his early attempts at recording. He furthered his studies in Germany and after returning to Bulgaria played an active part in the country's music life. His first major work was the Thracian Dances symphonic suite in three movements (1925). Later he added an additional movement to the suite, Mechkarsko (The Bear's Dance, 1926). His other works include the symphonic poems A Legend (1927), and Thrace (1937), the symphonic suite A Fairy Tale (1930), Symphonic Scherzo (1930), two symphonies (1945 and 1949), etc. Along with his symphonic work, he also created remarkable choral pieces - from songs for different choral formations up to large-scope dramatic ballads. In both genres he adapted the expressive means of the European musical tradition to the Bulgarian vision of the world. He thus created a musical style of his own combining in a perfect manner Bulgarian rhythm and tunes with European musical trends

The Bulgarian National Radio Symphony Orchestra, one of the leading formations in the Balkans, conveys magnificently the style and creative conception of the works. With its concert activities throughout the country, numerous successful tours abroad and extensive recording career, the orchestra has long become a model of high artistic and professional standard.
Milen Nachev is one of the most talented young Bulgarian conductors. He graduated from the Sofia State Academy of Music and in 1979. Following a competition, he began his studies at the Saint Petersburg Conservatoire, in Prof. Ilya Mussin's class in conducting, from which he graduated with honours, majoring in choral and orchestra conducting. After graduation, he began work at the Rousse Opera Theatre. In 1989 he specialised with Prof. Gennady Rozhdestvensky at the Chigiana Academy of Sienna, Italy. In the same year he was appointed principal conductor and artistic director of the Rousse Opera. In 1992 he was on an ANFIAC (UNESCO) internship and his managing practice was with the Paris Symphony Orchestra. He graduated in 1993 from the University of Burgundy in Dijon, France and began working as conductor at the Sofia Opera. In 1994, Mr. Nachev was invited to conduct the Bulgarian National Radio Symphony Orchestra and in the following year he headed this orchestra as its principal conductor. It was with this orchestra that Maestro Nachev has toured successfully in Germany, France and Spain and has made numerous recordings, world premieres including, of contemporary works for the sound collection of the Bulgarian National Radio. As visiting conductor he has worked with the orchestras of the Paris National Opera, the Klagenfurt Philharmonic (Austria), the Accademia Concordi Orchestra - Rome (Italy), the Bucharest National Radio Orchestra. In 1999 he was also appointed Principal Conductor of the Belgrade Radio and Television Symphony Orchestra. He has directed master classes in conducting at the Lyceo Academy in Barcelona, Spain and in Opava, the Czech Republic. |

At the time when the great opera singer Montserrat Caballe had a concert-recital in Sofia, she chose to present to the audience one of her students - the young singer Ina Kancheva. This was not only an indication of politeness to the host country. Ina Kancheva's performance was brilliant and she proved to be a worthy partner to her world-famous teacher. Ina Kancheva was born in Sofia and while still a child, she showed a talent for singing (between 1986 and 1994 she was member and soloist of the Bulgarian National Radio Children's Choir). In 1996-2000 she was a student at the Pancho Vladigerov State Academy of Music in Sofia, in Associate Professor Jasmina Kostova's class. In the 1997-1998 period she specialized at the European Opera Centre in Manchester. Since the year 2000 she has been a regular participant in Montserrat Caballe's master classes in Andorra, and since 2001 she has been working with Raina Kabaivanska. Ina Kancheva has taken part in a number of prestigious international festivals, in numerous gala concerts and opera performances in Bulgaria and throughout the world. She has performed on the opera stages of Stara Zagora, Varna, Plovdiv, Andorra, Sarajevo, Skopje, Madrid, etc. She has been constantly enriching her repertoire and currently it includes many of the major soprano parts along with some rarely performed parts in works like Carl Orff's Carmina Burana and Sergei Rachmaninoff's The Bells. |
