Epiphany (the Baptism of the Lord) is one of the Twelve Great feasts of the Russian Orthodox Church. On that day Christ came to John the Baptist, who was preaching on the Jordan River, to be baptized by him. The moment Jesus came up out of the water, the heavens opened and John saw the Holy Spirit in the form of a dove descending on Jesus. There was a voice of God the Father, saying: «This is my beloved Son, in Whom I am well pleased ». Thus John the Baptist realized Jesus was the due Messiah, the Son of God.
The CD contains selected chants of the feast’s divine services and of the rite of the Great Sanctification of Water, which on those days takes place in the churches, on the rivers or at the springs. The motets «When Thou, O Lord, wast baptised in the Jordan» and some others are performed with reverence by Hierodeacon German (Ryabtsev) in Valaam and Znamenny chants.

Following their acclaimed recordings of Berlioz’s Grande Messe des Morts and Mendelssohn’s Elijah, Paul McCreesh has once again assembled the mass forces of Gabrieli Consort & Players and Wrocaw Phiharmonic Choir to record one of the iconic masterpieces of the twentieth-century oratorio repertoire.
The work reflects Britten’s long-held and committed pacifist beliefs. Composed to mark the consecration of a new Cathedral in Coventry, Britten combines the Latin text of the Missa pro Defunctis with nine poems by the First World War poet Wilfred Owen, which vide a moving (and frequently uncomfortable) commentary on the liturgical text. |

This recording is dedicated to the 900th anniversary of the Assumption Laura of the Caves in Kiev. You will hear the Akathist for the Assumption and other hymns performed in the chants of the Laura, which are an example of the combination of the old tradition of singing with folk music, an example of the harmonious system of Orthodox liturgical singing. The recordings on the 2 CDs are melodic pearls in the liturgical necklace of the Laura. They convey the prayerful mood of believers, their striving to ascend from the earthly to the heavenly, from the temporal to the immortal. These hymns are performed with genuine Christian piety and veneration and therefore resound like a hymn of the victory of life over death, light over darkness, good over evil.
This is the first recording made in the reborn Cathedral of the Assumption of the Laura of the Caves in Kiev. |

This akathist is like a wreath interlaced with the most beautiful laudations for the Queen of Heaven. The exultant «O Victorious Leader…» was heard for the first time in 626 when Constantinople was saved from pagan siege by the intercession of the Mother of God. As a token of their gratitude for the miraculous escape the faithful sang a hymn with an exclamation «Rejoice!» all night long, and Constantinople patriarch Sergius composed this akathist.
Along with the Common chants the CD includes original authors" compositions performed by the soloists with choir («O Mother worthy of all praise», «O Victorious Leader» in various chants, Canon to the Mother of God, music of irmoses by P. Chesnokov; music of troparions by A.Arkhangelsky). |
