Choir of St. Alexander Nevsky Patriarchal Cathedral, Sofia
Dimitar Dimitrov, conductor

Gega New Music Company pays special attention to featuring liturgical music in its catalogue. Up to now the company has released a number of recordings with liturgical chants, which are a part of the usual festive liturgies. This is the first complete recording in Bulgaria of the Paschal Divine Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom, in observation of the East-Orthodox canon the way it is performed at the St. Alexander Nevsky Patriarchal Cathedral, together with the choir performance, chants and the bell chimes of the Cathedral. The St. Alexander Nevsky Patriarchal Cathedral was consecrated on September 12, 1924. Three years later (1927) Apostol Nikolaev established the mixed Choir with the Cathedral, which, ever since its foundation, has taken part in all church events and festive liturgies. In 1936, Prof Dobri Hristov, a great Bulgarian composer and conductor, student of Antonin Dvorak at the Prague Conservatory, took the position of conductor. D. Hristov is the author of a number of religious works, most of which were composed especially for the Cathedral's choir and they are still present in its repertoire. After Maestro Dobri Hristov, the choir was conducted in the course of 36 years by Angel Popkonstantinov, and since 1978 his conductor has been Dimitar Dimitrov. He graduated from the ”St. John of Rila” Sofia Ecclesiastic Seminary, the “St. Kliment of Ohrid” Academy of Theology, and the State Academy of Music in Sofia. While a student, in 1967, together with his colleagues from the Academy of Theology, he founded the “St. John Koukouzeles - Angeloglasniyat” Chamber Ensemble, whose conductor he has been ever since. He has been teaching religious music at the Department of Theology with the “St. Kliment Ohridsky” Sofia University and at the “Venerable Paisii of Hilendar” Subsidiary of the Plovdiv University in Kardjali. He also reads lectures in liturgical order at the Pancho Vladigerov State Academy of Music. Gega New released the present double CD album with this unique recording to mark the 80th anniversary from the consecration of the St. Alexander Nevsky Cathedral. The programme is also dedicated to the 2000th anniversary of Christ's Nativity.

In the thirty years since the National Youth Choirs of Great Britain were born, they have continued to blossom and flourish. New director Ben Parry was quick to notice they share their birthday in 2013 with Britten’s centenary, and the result is this celebratory double album.

Over the course of a year the Delphian engineers have followed the various choirs on their courses, and for the first time all eight groups appear on disc - six hundred singers, eight conductors, in three different venues.

The vast range of Britten’s choral output encompasses work to match the character of each of the different choirs, from the fresh-faced eagerness of the Training Choirs to the maturity and sophistication of the elite National Youth Chamber Choir. The rigorous training all these singers enjoy bears abundant fruit. Their vocal discipline, their energy, their sheer enthusiasm are vividly conveyed in this unique double birthday celebration.

1 CD, color booklet (44 pages) in Russian and in English with a narration on the history of the akathist and with the full text of the Praise to the Most Holy Mother of God.

This marvelous akathist was composed in the terrible times of Russian history. In 1917, on the 2 of March Emperor Nicholas II abdicated the throne, but that very day there happened an event that made many people recover their spirit. In the village of Kolomenskoe near Moscow a new icon of the Mother of God appeared, known as the «Derzhavnaya» icon. The Queen of heaven was depicted as an earthly queen there. In the years of cruel persecutions of the Church the icon didn’t cease to pour out the miraculous healings. Nowadays it still strengthens and consoles the believers, being one of the most loved and worshiped icons of the Mother of God.

St. Patriarch Tikhon took part in composing the Divine service and the akathist of Theotokos - the Queen and Protectress. The akathist is performed with reverence by the Moscow Churches’ Choir of Singers (Precentor Anatoly Kuleshov) in various chants and melodies, from classical Greek chant to severe monastic melody of the Sarov Hermitage.

Antchis Chati Chor (Tbilissi), Tsinandali Chor (Telavi/Kachetien), Three Elderly Singers (Gurien)

The traditional music of Georgia is the only music in the world to be under UNESCO protection. The music of Georgia is at its origins polyphonic. That none of the neighbouring countries have produced anything similar, eliminates the possibility that Georgians were directly influenced by other musical cultures. The Antchis Chati Choir has set itself the goal of reconstructing the Georgian repertoire in its original form. Its members maintain contacts with Georgian music experts all over the country. They often travel to villages, to record the song variations that are still sung today.

In summer 2003 Raumklang (Sebastian Pank) travelled to Georgia and met there beside the Antchis Chati Choir the Tsinandali Choir and three older singers from Guria. This recording was produced with an emergency generator in an old monastery, an abandoned cinema, and a former cultural centre. With this CD one can travel through Georgia in a musical way. From the powerful songs of Kachetia, Kartli and Megrelia - songs of love, about the host, wedding songs, an ancient field work song and others - to the sacred music from the Schemokmedi monastery.
