Meder - Oratorio Passion according to St. Matthew

Meder - Oratorio Passion according to St. Matthew
ID: RK2506
CDs: 1
Type: CD
Subcollection: Orchestra

J.S.Bach - Motets - Trinity Baroque

J.S.Bach - Motets - Trinity Baroque
ID: RK2601
CDs: 1
Type: CD
Collection: Baroque
Subcollection: Choir

Ioculatores; Ars Choralis Coeln; Amarcord; Jörg Peukert (narr); Sabine Heller (hp)

This deluxe presentation celebrates the eighth centenary of its subject. Here called “St. Elizabeth of Thuringia,” but better known as St. Elizabeth of Hungary (1207-1231), this daughter of the king and queen of Hungary was betrothed to the future margrave of Thuringia in infancy and brought up at that court. She was 14 when the marriage was celebrated, and they had three children before he went off to the Crusades, dying along the way at Otranto in 1227. Elizabeth, already moved by the ideals of the newly founded Franciscan order, devoted herself as Landgravine to the needs of the poor. As a widow, she left the inhospitable court to live in Marburg, where she established a hospital and labored for the sick until her death at the age of 24. Celebrated for her works on behalf of the poor and sick, she was canonized four years later. Devotion spread from Thuringia as far as Cambrai and her native Hungary. Schola Hungarica recorded two chant Offices for her feast (19:4), one from Cambrai, where her heart had been enshrined, and the other from Warburg, a source also copied in Hungary.

Unlike that collection of Office chants, this program is a wide-ranging group of vocal and instrumental pieces from the period, all related closely to the life of the saint. Three separate ensembles take their turns, in addition to Jörg Peukert, who reads from an early biography of the saint with aural punctuation by a harpist. Besides an antiphon, a responsory, a sequence, and a hymn from the Office, we hear vernacular songs by the monk of Salzburg and Walther von der Vogelweide, an Italian lauda, and instrumental pieces by Ioculatores. On two tracks Ioculatores ensemble joins with one or the other group. The tracks spoken in German run over 20 minutes without printed text. The booklet offers a detailed guide to the program, with notes and summaries of each track in addition to the full texts with translations, and it is lavishly illustrated. Everything has been achieved on the highest level to make this a worthy tribute on the saint’s anniversary. As a gift package, it would be a compliment to the taste of the recipient.

Ars Choralis Coeln is an all-female ensemble with international membership and has succeeded in establishing itself in the medieval music at home and abroad. Oni Wytars was founded in 1983 to explore new ways of interpreting Early Music.

Chilcott’s mighty setting of words from St John’s Gospel is a dramatic yet optimistic retelling of the Passiontide story. The work combines 13th and 17th century English poetry with the King James Bible text settings and, as with Bach’s great Passion settings, the role of the Evangelist is taken by the tenor soloist, who provides a melodious narrative throughout. Including 5 well- known hymn texts set to new, original melodies, the work further confirms Chilcott’s status as one of the world’s most popular active choral composers.

Rex Lawson (pianola)
BBC Singers - David Hill and James Morgan, conductors

Gabriel Jackson was Associate Composer with the BBC Singers from 2010 to 2013 and this disc collects the very best of this unique collaboration between composer and professional choral ensemble. The central work 'Airplane Cantata', premiered by the Singers in 2011, is an evocative tribute to the pioneers of flight and aircraft design, combining texts from early newsreels and pilots' journals, and featuring renowned pianola player Rex Lawson.

It is one of the first full length pieces written especially for the pianola since the 1930s. Gabriel states that in writing this piece he satisfied his obsession with aviation: “…the technology, the bravery and daring of pilots, the aesthetic beauty of aircraft, the transcendence of flying - and when thinking about what a piece for voices and pianola might be about, I was very struck by the fact that the (brief) heyday of the pianola coincided with the pioneering years of aviation.” The variety of texts used includes eye-witness accounts by Louis Blériot and the musings of Amelia Earhart. The seven-movement work makes full use of the amazing keyboard dexterity possible with the pianola’s virtuosic resources and contains the instrumental Toccata Aeronautica, a staggering showpiece movement for pianola alone, giving full opportunity to show what it can achieve, but which a pianist, restricted to ten fingers, could not. World-renowned pianolist, Rex Lawson, prepared the piano rolls making use of a computer programme which translates staff notation into a machine to punch the rolls, which he devised himself. Rex is a leading exponent of the pianola and works tirelessly to promote this once hugely-popular, but now rather misunderstood instrument. Gabriel Jackson won his third British Composer Award for 'Airplane Cantata' in 2012; his Choral Symphony, also included here, was shortlisted in 2013. This disc follows in Signum's popular series of recordings showcasing the work of the BBC singers and their associate composers. Previous discs include works by Judith Bingham and Edward Cowie.
