Edward Cowie’s unique compositional voice stems from his wide-ranging interdisciplinary interests in both the sonic and visual arts, with many of his works inspired by ideas and concepts from artworks and from the natural world. The opening piece of this recording - a 2011 commission for BBC Radio 3 - creates a complex musical tapestry and soundscape from the call of the Australian bell-bird, opening with translations of choruses of several species of Australian frogs.
In 2002 Cowie become the BBC Singers’ first ‘Associate Composer’, marking a relationship between the composer that began in the mid-1970s and continues to this day. |

Kolektion: RenaissanceErst nach dem Tod des prunksüchtigen Herzogs Albert V. von Bayern im Jahre 1584 konnten die bereits 1559 in seinem Auftrag entstandenen Bußpsalmen-Motetten, die er zeitlebens jeder Öffentlichkeit entzog, gedruckt werden. Lasso wählte als übergreifende Idee die Ordnung nach den 8 Kirchentonarten; dafür fügte er den sieben Bußpsalmen einen weiteren Text hinzu, den 148. Psalm. Für diese CD wurden der 1., 3., 6. und 7. Bußpsalm ausgewählt. Die elf Sänger interpretieren diese überaus subtile Musik mit feiner Sensibilität, die melodischen Linien schweben gleichsam im Raum der romanischen Basilika des Klosters Lehnin. Als besonders reizvoll erweist sich die gemischt solistisch-chorische Besetzung des Ensembles. So entsteht ein Gesamtklang, in dem Individualität und Fülle verschmelzen und das Hören dieser CD zu einem meditativen Erlebnis wird. |

The Bouts Ensemble is a chamber music ensemble devoted to the repertoire of the "high" baroque and pre-classical periods - ca. 1725-1775. Through performance of works by both famous and unjustly neglected composers, the group aims to contribute to a greater appreciation and understanding of music from this endlessly fascinating period. The members of this young group use their extensive experience in historical performance practice on period instruments to bring to this repertoire the virtuosity, vitality and intelligence that it demands. |

Coupling powerful interpretations with path-breaking scholarship, the choir Contrapunctus presents music by the best-known composers as well as unfamiliar masterpieces. Directed by Owen Rees, a specialist in music of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, the group presents imaginative programmes revealing previously undiscovered musical treasures and throwing new light on familiar works.
This recording explores the musical ‘cries of the oppressed’ from opposite ends of Europe, which include some of the most powerful works composed in England and Portugal during this period by Byrd, Tallis, Monte and Cardoso. The highlight perhaps is the first recording of a newly reconstructed vocal work by Thomas Tallis, Libera nos. This has long been thought to be an instrumental work, and has been recorded as such, but there’s persuasive historical evidence for us to be confident that this is in fact a choral setting of the antiphon Libera nos, and it is performed here with the relevant text restored to the five vocal parts |

Tenebrae return to the sublime music of Tomás Luis de Victoria on Signum with this recording of his timeless Tenebrae Responsories. The works mix the words of the Gospels with other texts commenting on collective suffering written around the 4th century, and would traditionally have been performed as part of a moving service in which candles are slowly extinguished to mark the progress and suffering of Christ that forms the Passion story.

Anfang des 17. Jahrhunderts wurde die deutsche Passionsmusik stark vom italienischen Oratorium beeinflusst, vor allem durch Heinrich Schütz gelangte der italienische Stil nach Deutschland. Unter den Musikern, die diese Tradition bis zu Bach weiterleiteten, befand sich der Sänger, Organist und Komponist Johann Valentin Meder. Seine Matthäuspassion entstand höchstwahrscheinlich 1701 in Riga.
Meders Werk spricht durch seine Klarheit und seinen zugänglichen Stil an. Die gefühlsbetonten Melodien und Texte stammen teilweise aus bekannten Chorälen der damaligen Passionszeit, Michael Alexander Willens besetzte die Vokalpartien entsprechend der damaligen Praxis mit fünf Sängern, die teilweise als Solisten, teilweise als Chor agieren. Obwohl das vorgeschriebene Ensemble nur wenige Instrumente umfasst (zwei Oboen im Wechsel mit zwei Blockflöten, Violinen und Basso continuo), entlockt ihm Willens gemeinsam mit der Kölner Akademie einen bemerkenswerten Farb- und Kontrastreichtum, der bereits im Mederschen Werk angelegt ist.
