Peter Phillips & Benjamin Nicholas conductors
Anna Steppler organ
The beginning of Advent is celebrated with a particular solemnity at Merton. For its second recording the college choir explores the musical riches that adorn this most special time in the church’s year, centring on a newly commissioned sequence of Magnificat antiphons from seven leading composers.
Founded in 2008, the new Choir of Merton College, Oxford is led by newly appointed Organist and fulltime Director of Music Benjamin Nicholas, and Reed Rubin Director of Music Peter Philips. The choir is rapidly emerging as a major force in collegiate choral music. The disc is recorded in the beautiful environs of Merton College Chapel, which has stood at the heart of the College as a place of worship for almost 750 years.

For their fourth recording for Delphian, the boys and men of Tewkesbury Abbey Schola Cantorum turn their attention to that doyen of Anglican church music, Charles Villiers Stanford. Alongside familiar gems from the Evensong repertoire, sung with characteristic vigour and freshness, the programme includes the six littleknown Bible Songs, each followed by its associated hymn. Amongst the soloists - all members of the choir - is Laurence Kilsby, 2009 BBC Chorister of the Year, making his solo debut on disc. |

Collection: Choral Collection Subcollection: Choir The Song of Songs stands apart from its Biblical surroundings as one of the supreme love poems of world literature, a celebration of erotic love in the form of a dialogue between a bridegroom and his bride, invoking all the senses - the fragrance of wine, blossom, fruits and spices. Ranging widely over five centuries, from the relative asperity of Dunstaple to the lush exoticism of Daniel-Lesur, this cherrypicked assortment of sweetmeats is given exultant life by Mike Brewer and Laudibus.
Brewer and his award-winning chamber choir Laudibus have unearthed some rare and precious gems in this recording of a cappella choral music by one of England’s best-loved composers. Little-known works both early and late nestle alongside repertory staples such as the glorious Mass in G minor, in a programme which displays Vaughan Williams’ indebtedness to both the sacred and secular instincts of his Elizabethan precursors.

Three Shakespeare Songs
Prayer to the Father of Heaven
Mass in G minor

Subcollection: Choral and Organ A significant Christmas release: Geoffrey Webber has put together a fantastic programme which Delphian had fun recording in the glorious acoustics of St Anne's Cathedral in Belfast. Subcollection: Choir ‘Coming from backgrounds of both English choral music and jazz, I have always been obsessed by musical connections. I love to perform music of one culture with singers of another, to help performers to share an awareness of music in different contexts.
I have had the good fortune to travel around the world every three years with the National Youth Choir of Great Britain. In South Africa I became fascinated by the rhythms and sounds of the music of the African continent. Mexico and Cuba opened up new vistas of musical connection for me, from elderly musicians performing the son jarocho in village tavernas in Veracruz to Afro- Caribbean jazz ensembles performing unbelievably complex music which arose out of that mix of cultures.
The pieces of choral music found here are similarly hybrid, because in most cases they combine elements from more than one source …’
The internationally-renowned National Youth Choir is peerless in bringing to life Brewer's transcontinental choral imaginings. Headed up by the first commercial recording of Mike’s Hamba Lulu, the programme journeys us from the Icelandic tundra to the sultry jazz clubs of Latin America. Is your hi-fi ready to go?

Subcollection: Choir Two of Britain's finest young choirs join forces and cross a continent to take on the sublime expressiveness of Rodion Shchedrin's 'Russian liturgy', an astonishing statement of faith composed in the early days of perestroika. Shchedrin's choral tableaux juxtapose tenderness with bracing sonic impact, and are shadowed throughout by the plangent voice of a solo oboe representing the soul of the Russian people. This ground-breaking choral partnership committed the work to disc following acclaimed UK première concert performances at the Spitalfields and Oundle festivals in the summer of 2008. In 1992 President Boris Yeltsin awarded Shchedrin the Russian State Prize for The Sealed Angel. |

Delphian's first orchestral recording presents a richly imagined new choral
symphony by Edward Harper, setting it alongside chamber works by this
inventive and limpidly expressive composer.
Harper's music is firmly within the British symphonic tradition, yet ranges wider still in its deeply felt response to human experience, from the 19th-century Dorset of William Barnes to a message of hope and reconciliation from the present-day Middle East.
Edward Harper was born in Taunton, Somerset. He studied music at Christ Church, Oxford, where he gained a first class honours degree, and at the Royal College of Music, London. Subsequently he studied for a further period with Franco Donatoni in Milan. Since 1964 he has been on the staff of the Faculty of Music at Edinburgh University, where he is a Senior Lecturer. He is active as a pianist and conductor and is the Director of the New Music Group of Scotland, an ensemble which has established itself as a significant and highly- valued part of Scottish musical life, as well as giving concerts in London and abroad.
