Kolektion: Sacred MusicSubkolektion: Choir In the 1960s few would have predicted that Peter Maxwell Davies would eventually write a set of Evening Canticles; yet religious texts have always been of fundamental importance to the composer, as this disc vividly demonstrates by bringing together sacred masterworks from both ends of his career. Tough, uncompromising and of surpassing beauty, Davies’ major contributions to the Anglican repertoire are given thrilling voice by these fearless champions of contemporary liturgical music.

Kolektion: BaroqueIt is easy to forget that our great English choral tradition was once silenced by Act of Parliament. The Restoration of the Monarchy in 1660 ushered in one of the finest periods of English music, though the road to recovery for church music was a slow and difficult one. William Turner, then a precocious nine year-old, went on to become one of the best known composers and singers of his day. This premiere recording presents a cross section of Turner's sacred music, ranging from small-scale liturgical works to some of his grandest creations, the Te Deum and Jubilate in D.

Kolektion: Sacred MusicSubkolektion: Choir During the last months of his life Mozart composed a Requiem, which he was not able to finish. The composition is shrouded in mystery and linked with different legends, all of which are connected with a mysterious gentleman who ordered it. But whatever the reason for its creation, the Requiem is one of the greatest works of the human musical genius. The performance in this release is of prestigious Bulgarian artists, which have achieved an emotional, impressive and fascinating interpretation. The artistic value of the recording is a result of a truthful rendition of the emotions and the meaning of the different movements of the Requiem, and emphasizing the melody and the details of Mozart's music. The soloist ensemble, selected in accordance with the score, contributes to the whole impact of the composition. This release can undoubtedly be ranked among the interesting interpretations of the great work of Mozart.

Kolektion: Sacred MusicJohn Taverner brought the English florid style to its culmination and final flowering; his music is quite unlike anything written by his continental contemporaries and, viewed retrospectively, represents not only the culmination of one period but also the beginning of something new. In his debut recording with the critically acclaimed Edinburgh choir, Duncan Ferguson presents this music with forces akin to those of the 16th century - a small group of children and a larger number of men.The singers respond with their characteristic freshness, and an emotional authenticity born of the daily round of liturgical performance.

Allain has developed a unique musical dialect malleable enough to cover the gamut of liturgical purposes represented on this disc. Whether refracted through the facets of spiritual, carol, motet or Mass setting, his is a music that can only be added to the list of languages from which we should all take inspiration.
Saxophonist John Harle joins Scottish soprano Susan Hamilton and Delphian artist Matthew Owens in these bold works, which are at once heartrending and uncompromising. Whether refracted through the varied generic possibilities of spiritual, carol, motet or Mass, Richard Allain has developed a musical dialect malleable enough to cover the gamut of liturgical purposes represented on this disc. With advocates such as these, Allain’s music cannot fail to make a lasting impression.
