The first release in a new partnership between Classical Opera and Signum Records begins with Mozart’s remarkable sacred singspiel Die Schuldigkeit des ersten Gebots, composed when he was just eleven. The music is full of tender beauty, dynamism and descriptive flair, and the young composer’s innate sense of understanding and sympathy for the human condition already shines through.
The story follows the efforts of The Spirit of Christianity (Andrew Kennedy) - aided by Divine Justice (Cora Burggraaf ) and Divine Mercy (Sarah Fox) - to win back the heart of a Lapsed Christian (Allan Clayton) as he lies fast asleep. In opposition to this however stands The Spirit of Worldliness (Sophie Bevan), who urges the Christian to forget what The Spirit shows him and to follow her pleasure-seeking philosophies. As Justice and Mercy withdraw to observe, The Spirit of Christianity seeks to win back the lapsed Christian, but will this lost soul be able to resist the temptations of indulgence and short-term satisfaction that Worldliness offers?
The second disc in this 2CD Set is an Enhanced CD, with an exclusive 10-minute feature on the making of the recording additional libretto and programme note translations. Full German to English translations included in the booklet. |

The story of the opera
Overture
A cheerful mood ata Czech country fair, with the folk dancing and singing, young couples meeting, weddings being arranged.
Act 1
Mařenka and Jeník want to marry. However, Mařenka’s father, Krušina, has other ideas. He wants Mařenka to marry a boy she has never met, Vašek, the son of Micha, who is a wealthy landowner. The marriage-broker Kecal is hired to broker the marriage between Mařenka and Vašek. Kecal is made aware of the relationship between Mařenka and Jeník, and becomes determined to break them up in order to facilitate the marriage of Mařenka with Vašek.
Act 2
Mařenka and Vašek meet each other by accident and, while Mařenka works out who Vašek is, on the other hand, Vašek is too much of a simpleton to realize who she is. Mařenka starts painting a picture of Vašek’s intended bride as a woman who would make his life a total misery if he should marry her. This turns Vašek off the idea of marrying his intended wife, and also makes him interested in this girl who obviously has his best interests at heart. Meanwhile, Kecal starts his campaign to pay off Jeník, so that Jeník will renounce his right to marry Mařenka. Kecal eventually reaches a price which Jeník finds agreeable, and Jeník agrees to sell the rights to his fiancée for 300 guilders. Jeník also specifies that this is on condition that Mařenka marries Mícha’s son. Since Kecal intends Mařenka to marry Vašek, so that he can get his money, he readily agrees. As soon as the contract is signed, the entire town repudiates Jeník.
Act 3
A travelling circus comes to town, and Vašek becomes entranced with the gypsy, Esmeralda. There is some trouble with one of the acts, and Vašek is persuaded to assist the circus. Mařenka is angry with Jeník for what he has done, and she angrily turns her back on him and agrees to marry Vašek. When both sets of parents meet Mařenka, the appearance of Jeník at the meeting results in the revelation that Jeník is the long-lost son of Mícha from his first marriage, and that Jeník had been hounded out of house and home by his stepmother, Háta (who is also Vašek’s mother). As a result of this revelation, the terms of the contract between Kecal and Jeník, whereby Jeník gave her up (on condition that Mařenka should marry the son of Mícha), allows Mařenka to marry either Jeník or Vašek. Mařenka chooses Jeník, and Kecal is left with the embarrassment of having paid Jeník 300 guilders in order for Jeník to give up the right to marry Mařenka, to Jeník, himself. At this time, a frightened child rushes in and exclaims that a bear has escaped from the circus. As everybody cowers, the bear wanders in and pulls off its head, revealing that it was just the immature Vašek disguised in a bear costume for the circus. Embarrassed, Háta drags Vašek off and the parents and the villagers congratulate the happy couple. |

Podkolekce: Opera A new chapter in the Ricordi Oggi series, the collection that enacts the strong partnership between Stradivarius and the prestigious Casa Ricordi publishing house.
This world première recording is dedicated to Luca Francesconi and his Ballata, a two-act opera whose libretto, by Umberto Fiori, is based upon S. T. Coleridge’s Rime of the Ancient Mariner. Francesconi confirms his particular confidence for large-scale musical thought, rather than merely show a flair for illustrative brilliance.
"Coleridge’s Mariner confronts a natural world that is implacably adverse, one that [...] remains magnificently indifferent to its needs. To respond to that requires a sense of pacing, of large-scale dynamic proportion, that must prevail over any proclivity to exuberant detail.[...] That sense of scale [...] is everywhere in Francesconi’s recent work. [...] Fiori’s fine libretto is so constructed as to allow for the enchained series of numbers that are integral to that form of dramaturgy, because they pace the opera’s progress through a sequence of images and actions whose synopsis could be presented in a few, trite sentences, but whose power and resonance can only be felt when worked through at the slow, remorseless pace common to Francesconi’s opera, and Coleridge’s poem” David Osmond-Smith, liner notes.

Kolekce: Opera CollectionPodkolekce: Opera Lost Highway is a composition that decidedly lives from the transformation of physical spaces, diverse inner and outer spaces, into sound spaces. In performance, this is achieved through various, three-dimensional sound projections, which surround the audience with playing, live-electronics, and virtual acoustics, resulting in different experiential relationships from within and without, close by, and from a distance. The illustrations of these sound spaces and notes naturally are only an attempt to approach the experience in the theater. Fortunately, the possibilities of surround-techniques have come to our aid, which envelop the listener with alternating, overlaying sound-strata. Thus, the present production was intended to be mixed for 5.1 surround. (Olga Neuwirth)

Podkolekce: Voices and Orchestra World premiere recording
Begehren is a “dramaturgical” and compositional spur for music theatre in the 21st century: a parable on the dialectic of isolation, a man and a woman in a no man’s land of placeless-ness and a play on the potential possibilities behind reality. With a libretto after texts by Ovid, Virgil, Hermann Broch, Cesare Pavese and Günter Eich, this production was selected by a panel of 55 critics as the best worldwide premiere of the 2002/03 season |

Orchestra and Choir of the USSR Bolshoi Theatre, Alexander Lazarev
Firma Melodiya presents a recording of Kirill Molchanov’s opera The Dawns Here Are Quiet.
The composer of the opera attained his nationwide fame thanks to, first of all, his lyrical songs, which are now considered a golden repertoire for academic and popular singers alike (There Are So Many Golden Lights, No Hiding from People in the Village, Here Come the Soldiers, Heart, Be Quiet and many others).
Meanwhile, Kirill Molchanov wrote eight operas to his own librettos, ballets Macbeth and Three Cards, and music for theatre productions and motion pictures, including true gems of the domestic cinematograph (It Happened in Penkovo, On Seven Winds, We’ll Live Till Monday).
The opera is based on Boris Vasiliev’s short novel of the same name. It is a stirring story of a tragic demise of young female anti-aircraft gunners first published in 1969, which is still one of the most widely read books about the Great Patriotic War. In 1972, Stanislav Rostotsky’s famous film with music by Kirill Molchanov premiered in cinemas across the country.
The opera is composed in a simple and accessible language. However, Zhenya’s romance to the poem 'Wait for Me' by Konstantin Simonov is the most popular piece from the opera - without any direct link to the plot, this fragment is a generalized symbol of millions of people whose lives and feelings were cut short by the war.
This recording of the opera was made in 1976 by the artists, choir and orchestra of the USSR Bolshoi Theatre featuring leading soloists of the opera company - Galina Kalinina, Galina Borisova, Klara Kadinskaya, Artur Eisen and others. Conducted by Alexander Lazarev.
