Subcollection: ViolinWith its vivid poetry and technical ingenuity, Vivaldi’s 'Four Seasons' was ground-breaking at the time of its composition and to this day remains as influential and transfixing as ever. In this recording, violinist Kati Debretzeni directs the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment based on the energetic, historically-informed performances given last February when, with renowned choreographer Henri Oguike, the OAE fused authentic performance with contemporary choreography.
The booklet includes a ‘Guided tour of the Four Seasons’, allowing listeners to follow the poetry that inspired Vivaldi as they hear the performances on the disc, including additional composer’s notes from Vivaldi’s own scores. Born in Transylvania, Kati Debretzeni studied with Ora Shiran and Baroque violin with Catherine Mackintosh and Walter Reiter at the Royal College of Music in London. Since the year 2000 she has led the English Baroque Soloists under Sir John Eliot Gardiner, and since 2008 is one of the leaders of the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, which she has directed and lead in the UK, Europe and the US. Kati features as soloist on two versions of Bach’s Brandenburg concertos, with the European Brandenburg Ensemble under Trevor Pinnock (Gramophone Award, 2008), and again with the English Baroque Soloists. She has directed from the violin various ensembles in Israel, Poland, Norway, Iceland and the UK, and teaches the Baroque and Classical violin at the Royal Conservatory of Music in The Hague. |

Collection: Orchestral Works Subcollection: OrchestreIn the first half of the 19th century, Russian composers began to show an interest for the music of the Orient. Then, at the very beginning of the century, the Caucasus became open for visits. Not only composers, but also poets and painters were impressed with its exoticism, and the notion "Orient" included not just the Arab East, but the Caucasus as well. In terms of style, its nature, traditions, music and dances were literally overwhelming. The Caucasus inspired many of the works of the Russian culture of the 19th century. The territorial proximity of the Caucasus to Russia, close associations with the culture and arts of the Caucasus, including the works by Alexander Pushkin and Mikhail Lermontov, and, mainly, visits of Russian composers such as Mikhail Glinka and Mily Balakirev to the Caucasus - all that were reasons why orientality found its fullest development and expression in the Russian music as compared to the other European music cultures. |

BBC National Orchestra of Wales, Jac van Steen
The first release from the BBC National Orchestra of Wales’s inaugural Composer in Residence, Guto Pryderi Puw. Puw studied composition with composers John Pickard, Andrew Lewis and Pwyll ap Siôn. He first made an impact as a composer in 1995 when he won the Composer's Medal at the National Eisteddfod (and again in 1997). Since then he has received many commissions and performances while being much in demand as a composer at various festivals in the UK and abroad. His music is regularly broadcast on radio and television. He is the Chairman and Artistic Director of the Bangor New Music Festival, which has been running since 2000.
In 2005 his orchestral work, a BBC Radio 3 commission, 'Reservoirs', was nominated in the Large-Scale Composition category of the Royal Philharmonic Society Music Awards, and in February 2006 he was appointed as the first Resident Composer with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales to compose three new orchestral commissions. His 'Concerto for Oboe' won the BBC Radio 3 'Listeners Award' category at the 2007 British Composer Awards and the Proms commissioned piece '...unless I open the door...' won BBC Music Magazine's 'Best Proms Premiere' for its performance in 2007. In 2010 he won an award from the Thomas Ellis Memorial Fund to record his orchestral music on the Signum label. He is currently working on a concerto for violinist Madeleine Mitchell for 2014 and his opera Y Tŵr (‘The Tower’) commissioned by Music Theatre Wales for 2016.
A dual-language release in both Welsh and English, this release features a range of orchestral works inspired by stories and landscapes of Wales. |

Collection: Ballet Music Subcollection: OrchestreThis ballet in four scenes is based on Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tale “The Ice Maiden”. It was first performed at the Paris Opera in 1928 and this performance was recorded in 1966.
Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tale The Ice Maiden was taken as a basis for the libretto of Le baiser de la fée - a ballet that was ordered by Ida Rubinstein for her seasons. However, Stravinsky admitted that only some motifs were left from the Danish writer's fairy tale. They are the mother and her child lost in the blizzard, the Fairy who marked the child with her magic kiss and who then took him away to her miraculous world of eternal life. Using some themes from the pieces by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, Stravinsky dedicated to the great Russian composer his score and supposed that the image of the Fairy and her magical kiss is very actual, because each of Tchaikovsky's creations was sealed with the muse's kiss. |
