STUART- IVANOV DUO

STUART- IVANOV DUO
ID: GD340
CDs: 1
Type: CD
Subcollection: Violin

Pianist Svetozar Ivanov has always surprised the listener with the interesting programs that he records. He definitely has an affinity for music of the 20th century and the end of the 19th century. His previous two CDs released by Gega New - Vers la flamme (GD 322) and Naked Tango (GD 327) include mainly works by Debussy, Berg, Schoenberg, Scriabin, Satie, Nazareth, Helps, Tisdall, Stravinsky, Barber. In his latest album Svetozar Ivanov concentrates again on 20th century music. Together with the violinist Carolyn Stuart they present the composer Nikolai Roslavets, who is almost unknown and very rarely performed. In the 20s of the last century, however, Roslavets was among the most famous Russian authors. He was president of the prestigious Association of Contemporary Music, a member of the first Soviet Composers’ Union, chief editor of the journal Muzykalnaya Kultura (Musical Culture), and a highly regarded composer and teacher. After Josef Stalin rose to power the Russian Association of Proletarian Musicians began its attacks on the Association of Contemporary Music, and on experimental artists. Roslavets was pronounced “decadent and formalist”, an “enemy of the people” and by the end of the decade was stripped of his prestigious positions. Many of his works were lost, stolen, or destroyed. The Duo Carolyn Stuart - Svetozar Ivanov have managed to collect some of the works that have survived. A part of them have never been released or performed before. This is a world premiere recording of some of his unpublished miniatures.
Carolyn Stuart currently serves as Associate Professor of Music at the University of South Florida and as chair and jury member for the Rutenberg International Chamber Music Festival and Competition. She has presented master classes at universities and conservatories throughout the US, Canada, and Europe. She often performs at concerts in North America and Europe. An eloquent interpreter of modern music, Ms. Stuart avidly collaborates with current composers and has been a member of the celebrated new music ensemble Quorum. Svetozar Ivanov was born in Bulgaria and graduated at the Prof. Pancho Vladigerov National Conservatory in Sofia. Mr. Ivanov holds a degree from the University of Michigan (DMA). Svetozar Ivanov is Associate Professor of Piano at University of South Florida and has often served on juries for prestigious music competitions and festivals. His gives performances at concerts as recitalist and orchestra soloist in Europe and North America.

20th & 21st Century Works for Two Pianos and Percussion - VOLAND QUARTET
ID: GD310
CDs: 1
Type: CD
Subcollection: Piano

Recorded in Bulgaria Concert Hall, Sofia, February 2004
Balance: Miroslav Danev
Editing: Pavel Boliarski (Acoustic Version Studio)

Voland Quartet presents a very interesting program. The works included were created during the last 70 years and they show some trends in the development of 20th and 21st century music. Of special interest is the combination of two pianos with the timbre variety of the different percussion instruments. The four musicians are renowned solo performers, but in the present recordings they have achieved an amazing ensemble performance.
Ivo Varbanov was born in Bulgaria and received his music education in Italy and the UK, having studied with famous piano teachers. He has performed in important venues such as Wigmore Hall, South Bank Centre, S. John’s Smiths Square in London, Carnegie Hall in New York, and Bulgaria Concert Hall in Sofia. Gega New has published two CDs of the musician: the first one containing works for piano by Mussorgsky (GD 117) and the second - works for cello and piano by Pizzetti, recorded together with the cello player Seeli Toivio (GD 275).
Michal Drewnowski studied the piano with Ewa Poblocka in Warsaw and later on with his father, the well known Polish pianist Marek Drewnowski. He has played extensively as a soloist and chamber musician in most of the European countries in important festivals and venues. He has particular affinity to19th and 20th century music, which is evident in his performance in this program.
Christo Yotzov graduated at the State Academy of Music in Sofia with Dobri Paliev. In 1985, he founded Acoustic Version with Antony Donchev and since then has won many prestigious awards at European jazz festivals. He has performed all over the world with Acoustic Version and also with other artists such as Tommy Smith, Andy Scofield, Milcho Leviev, Alexia, Reiner Winterschlagen, Yildiz Ibrahimova, and Adam Pierontchik. He has recorded more than 20 LPs and CDs. This is his first classical music CD.
Radosvet (Eti) Kukudov also studied at the State Academy of Music in Sofia completing his Master Degree with Dobri Paliev. He is a laureate of all national competitions for percussion instruments and chamber music. As a timpanist of the Bulgarian National Radio Symphony Orchestra, he has toured extensively Germany, Spain, Italy, France, Switzerland, Greece, and Turkey. He has also recorded as a chamber musician works by contemporary Bulgarian composers.

ENRIQUE GRANADOS - LUDMIL ANGELOV, piano

ENRIQUE GRANADOS - LUDMIL ANGELOV, piano
ID: GD329
CDs: 1
Type: CD
Collection:
Instrumental
Subcollection: Piano

Ludmil Angelov has always surprised the listener with the interesting programs he chooses to record. He has already recorded three programs on the Gega New label: Chopin’s complete rondos and variations (GD 135), works by Richard Strauss (GD 196) and together with the violinist Vesko Eschkenazy - works by Prokofiev, Shostakovich and Shchedrin (GD 269). Two of the releases received international awards. The CD with rondos and variations of Chopin won the Grand Prix du Disque Chopin of the 5th International Frédéric Chopin Competition in Warszaw, 2000, and the CD with Ludmil Amgelov and Vesko Eschkenazy performing received the Golden Muse award in 2003 by the Russian Cultural and Information Centre in Sofia. The present release is also expected to create great interest among music lovers, as Enrique Granados is one of the most distinguished Spanish composers. He began composing the Dances in 1883, but they took the completed form in which we know them today in 1900. According to the latest research of the composer’s works, the titles of only two of the pieces (No. 4 and No. 7) were given by the composer, and the rest were named by the publisher. The last two pieces - Moresque and Canción árabe, were published in 1890 and both have an oriental atmosphere about them.
It is not by chance that Ludmil Angelov has selected to record these works. He resides in Spain, where he has founded and is currently an artistic director of the International Music Festival in Toledo. The pianist began his artistic career in Bulgaria and he has also given concerts throughout Europe, the USA, South America, Hong Kong, Korea and Taiwan. He has been performing under the baton of conductors such as L. Foster, J. DePriest, J.-B. Pommier, M. Andreae, G. Pehlivanian, F. Glushchenko, J. Pons, P. Halffter, E. Garcia Asensio, M. Boni, R. Raichev, M. Angelov, E. Tabakov, V. Ghiaurov, R. Milanov, etc. Ludmil Angelov has been awarded with prizes at international competitions, including Senigallia (Italy, 1976), Frédéric Chopin (Poland, 1985), Palm Beach International Competition (USA, 1990), Piano Masters (Monte Carlo, 1994) and World Piano Masters Tour (France, 1997). He has had successful recitals at the La Roque d’Anthéron International Piano Festival and the International Chopin Festival in Warsaw. In 2002 Ludmil Angelov made his debut at the Newport Festival in the U.S.A. and in 2005 his debut at “Rarities of Piano Music” Festival in Husum, Germany. The pianist has also recorded for RСА, France Classique, Pentatone and Danacord. His performances have been broadcast by radio and TV stations in Bulgaria, France, Spain, Poland, Hungary, Argentina and Korea.

Svetozar Ivanov was born in Bulgaria and is a graduate of the Pancho Vladigerov Bulgarian National Conservatory. He holds the Doctor of Musical Arts degree from University of Michigan. The first CD of the pianist released by Gega New includes works by Debussy, Berg, Schoenberg and Scriabin (GD 322). The second CD features pieces which present the development of music art within a period of four centuries. Svetozar Ivanov says about the present program: “In 1914 Erik Satie composed Perpetual Tango which was meant to be repeated eternally. Seventy years later John Cage wrote a piece with the same title, shape and structure as Satie's tango. Separately and superimposed, these two works encircle this CD endlessly. The title, Naked Tango is borrowed from a stunning work (reproduced on the cover) by Argentine artist Guillermo Kuitca. I was very fortunate to know Robert Helps during the last few years of his life and he remains a great inspiration for me as a person and as a musician. His music, which is the heart of this CD, along with timeless sounds from the distant past (Tisdall, Rameau) is woven into the perpetual rhythm of the tango as expressed by Nazareth, Stravinsky, Shchedrin and Barber.”

Two young and talented Bulgarian performers have chosen for their first album released in Bulgaria a program, which includes Bulgarian authors only. The composers Pancho Vladigerov, Parashkev Hadjiev and Vesselin Stoyanov are among the classics of Bulgarian musical heritage. Their works are much admired by music lovers, and performers often include them in their repertoire. A lot of courage is required for a young performer to record them, as they have been performed and recorded by the greatest Bulgarian musicians, and appreciators of the three composers are well-acquainted with the various interpretations of these works. The violinist Yana Burova and the pianist Vesselina Tckakarova answer this challenge in an amazing way.
Yana Burova and Vesselina Tchakarova studied at secondary music schools in Varna and Sofia, respectively, and after that furthered their education at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama in London. In 2002 Yana Burova completed her studies as a scholarship student of the Bulgarian virtuoso Vasko Vassilev at London’s Trinity College of Music. In 2001 Vesselina Tchakarova made her London solo recital debut. The following year she appeared as soloist with Vox Aurae orchestra in Brescia, Italy under Giancarlo De Lorenzo.
