Two works from very different composers: Chopin’s works for cello were few and far between, but these two straddle his compositional life: the Introduction and Polonaise was written in 1829 when he was just 19, and the cello sonata in (1845-6) is his last work published during his lifetime (all latter works with opus numbers being published posthumously, against his wishes). In contrast, Saint-Saëns published a great many works for the cello (as well as works in almost every genre of the classical canon), with the Cello Sonata No.2 composed during his travels in Biskra, Algeria.
Jamie Walton and Daniel Grimwood are performers who have proven themselves in both concert and recordings such as these to be formidable and enthralling interpreters of the classical canon. This release follows their previous duo disc of Rachmaninov and Grieg cello sonatas (SIGCD172). |

Mit „Fanny & Felix“ erscheint im Mendelssohn-Juibiläumsjahr eine Hommage an die Geschwisterliebe der beiden, die vor allem durch ihre Hingabe an die Musik bestimmte wurde. Es existierte kaum ein Werk Mendelssohns, zu dem seine Schwester nicht ihr kritisches Urteil abgab. Und umgekehrt bewunderte auch Felix seine Schwester für ihr Talent und Ideenreichtum, auch wenn er deren Veröffentlichungsplänen als Komponistin zweifelnd gegenüberstand.
Das d-Moll Klaviertrio Fanny Hensels erscheint als selbstbewusste Antwort auf das kurz zuvor erschienene c-Moll Trio ihres gefeierten Bruders Felix. Es scheint, als hätte die Komponisten die Herausforderung ihres Bruders angenommen und ihr etwas zutiefst Seelenverwandtes und doch ganz Eigenes entgegnet. Dem Trio Vivente gelingt eine transparente Gegenüberstellung der beiden Klaviertrios, die sich in ihrer Expressivität ergänzen, motivisch verschlingen und gleichzeitig voneinander abgrenzen. |
