TRAKIA FOLKLORE ENSEMBLE - FOLK SONGS & DANCES

TRAKIA FOLKLORE ENSEMBLE - FOLK SONGS & DANCES
ID: GD110
CDs: 1
Type: CD
Kolektion: TraditionalSubkolektion: Folk Music

The recording of the TRAKIA Ensemble holds a particular place in the series of CDs of the best Bulgarian folk ensembles released by GEGA NEW.
At first glance, the TRAKIA Ensemble continues the tradition of the best formations: its repertoire is based on authentic folk songs, tunes and dances from all over Bulgaria, the orchestra is traditional, the music and dance material has been interpreted by famous artists who also work with other folk groups.
And still, with the very first bars the listener hears, there comes a surprise: a sparkling choir, a virtuoso and aggressive orchestra and, before all, an interpretation of songs we all know but seem to discover for the first time! The merit of art director and conductor Stefan Moutafchiev in this respect is invaluable. A man of unique musical thinking he was never after outer effects but rather subjected his work with the ensemble to his deep conviction that today the Bulgarian folklore should be developed and enriched by those expressive devices that prevail in 20th-century world music.
Of course, in his creative efforts Moutafchiev was immensely facilitated by each and every performer of the TRAKIA Ensemble. All of them have graduated from the folk-music schools in Kotel and Shiroka Luka, or the Academy for Music and Dance Art in Plovdiv. And all of them, art director and performers, have been united by a common aesthetic idea.

EMILE NAOUMOFF, piano - FREDERIC CHOPIN

EMILE NAOUMOFF, piano - FREDERIC CHOPIN
ID: GD112
CDs: 1
Type: CD
Kolektion: InstrumentalSubkolektion: Piano

The CD of the famous Bulgarian pianist and composer Emile Naoumoff, includes eight mazurkas, written by Chopin throughout the years, some of which are much preferred by the performers for the specific melodic and metro-rhythmical character of the music. To them add preludes, waltzes, and other popular and attractive for the listener works by the great Polish composer, patriot, dreamer, rebel, romantic and innovator. The moods are melancholic and nostalgic, at times sad, even gloomy, at times varied with outbursts of joy and hope. Emile Naoumoff interprets each of the miniatures in a manner of his own, imbuing them with a feeling, with tenderness and intimacy. His performance impresses with a masterful switching between the tempos, fine nuancing and elegance. The recording highlights Naoumoff as an excellent interpreter of Chopin's music, as a master of expressiveness who has achieved a unity between the author's text and his own reading. Thus the pieces sound in a good style and acquire a character different

Recorded at the St. Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, Sofia, in 1999

This is yet another release from the series of Slavonic Orthodox Chants in Gega New's catalogue. The Male Choir of the Sveta Nedelya Cathedral in Sofia is one of the oldest Bulgarian church choirs, whose foundation (1897) and development is associated with the name of the great Bulgarian musician Nikolai Nikolaev. He is one of the founding fathers of musical life in Bulgaria, and is connected with the establishment of some of the first musical institutions in the country. Currently, the choir is directed by Kiril Popov and he has dedicated this programme to the 2000th anniversary of the birth of Jesus Christ. The release presents chants from the All Night Vigil and the Holy Liturgy, strictly observing the order of performance in the Divine Service used in common practice nowadays. Some of the chants are original works by Petar Dinev and Dobri Hristov (Bulgaria), and by the Russian composers Alexander Grechaninov, Pavel Chesnokov, Ipolitov-Ivanov, etc. The release also includes arrangements made by different musicians throughout the years. The authentic sounding as well as the participation of priests makes this recording invaluable. The performance of the choir has achieved the characteristic emotional and psychological effect resulting from the diction and the manner of sounding.

In her second compact disc, released by Gega New, the cellist Kalina Krusteva has included two magnificent concertos giving testimony to her performing mastership. For they require not only virtuosity, free from any type of technical impediments, but also a very specific emotionality, along with experience in the dramaturgy, which is very specific for both the concertos by Schumann and Elgar. Kalina Krusteva's recording speaks eloquently of her brilliant creative development (a pupil of the Prof. Pancho Vladigerov State Academy of Music in Sofia, graduate of the Royal Academy of Music - London, holder of diplomas from master classes for cellists given by Misha Mayski, Robert Cohen, Steven Isserlis, etc.)

Philip Koutev's work was in constant progress and this CD is an illustration of the almost half-a-century folk-musical process. Starting with Koutev's famous Polegnala e Tudora (Tudora Lay Down), the singers perform several of his songs. The songs and instrumental pieces by Georgi Genov, Georgi Andreev and Hristofor Radanov show us the musical idiom of the younger generation, while Theodosii Spassov's works are indicative of a musician's non-traditional approach to the different genres. The programme ends with Dva guluba (Two Pigeons) by Kosta Kolev, a renowned master of folk arrangements. And to complete the picture, there are three sisters from the Pirin Mountains and some Shoppe singers, who take us back to the original sources of this fascinating music.

Elena Kouteva, chief artistic director
Georgi Genov, choir-master
Georgi Andreev, conductor of the orchestra

Soloists: Sorina Bogomilova, Stoyanka Dosseva, Nikolina Raikova, Todorka Momcheva, Neli Andreeva, Sofia Ilieva, the Bisserov Sisters, Yordan Georgiev (tupan). After the success of the first programme of the RHODOPEA Kaba Trio (GD 183), the second release of the trio features again Rhodope songs from RHODOPEA's repertoire. This time the trio performs accompanied by an instrumental group, rather than a cappella. Of particular interest are the songs by Stefan Dragostinov. They demonstrate the broad range of the singers' unique vocal abilities. Their beautiful alto voices are close in timbre to the sounding of the Rhodope kaba bagpipe. That is why the songs, recorded in an authentic unison with Georgi Kichukov's kaba bagpipe, fascinate the listeners.

Participating: Georgi Kichukov (kaba bagpipe) and instrumental group
Stefan Dragostinov, conductor (14, 15, 16)

Type: CD
Subkolektion: String instruments

The release is dedicated to the 90th anniversary of Academician Marin Goleminov, the classic of Bulgarian school of composing. It contains four works among which the String Quartet No 3 "Old-Bulgarian" has been a repertoire work for decades now. Written in the 1940s, it is conceptually related to some of his most famous opuses like the dance drama Nestinarka (The Fire-Dancer) and Symphonic Variations on a Theme by Dobri Hristov. The String Quartet No. 7 is from the 70s and bears the marks of Goleminov's evolution of style. The two concert pieces are from the 80s and were inspired by the art of flutist Simeon Shterev and oboist Georgi Zhelyazov. They demonstrate the virtuoso command of compositional and technique devices, of the orchestral writing, Goleminov's ability to refract elements of the aleatoric and sonata, polyphonic and post-realist music through his outstanding individuality.

The CD includes two popular pieces of Baroque music: Vivaldi's The Four Seasons and Händel's Concerto Grosso Op. 6 No. 9. These are not only paragons of mastery and innovation but also works which present to the performers the opportunity to demonstrate sound culture, attitude towards the peculiarities of the Baroque style, virtuosity and keen sense of music-making. Named after the four seasons, the concertos are a touchstone for the mastery of both orchestra and soloist. This is the flute version of the work, performed by Professor Lydia Oshavkova, famous not only at home but also in many countries in the world. An excellent interpreter of Renaissance and Baroque music, Oshavkova possesses all the qualities necessary to rank her among the most remarkable flutists of today.
