GODINI, GODINI - BULGARIAN FOLK SONGS FOR MIXED CHOIR

GODINI, GODINI - BULGARIAN FOLK SONGS FOR MIXED CHOIR
ID: GD339
CDs: 1
Type: CD
Kolektion: TraditionalSubkolektion: Folk Music

Bulgarian folk music creates great interest throughout the world. The concerts given by Bulgarian ensembles are received with enthusiastic applause, and in some countries amateur groups are created in which Bulgarian folk music is learned and performed.
Gega New has already released albums of two such folk groups: Topolovo Orchestra from France (GD 148) and Balkan Transit from Denmark (GD 311). We now present to our listeners the wonderful recordings of Cubrica Ensemble from the Netherlands.
Cubrica Ensemble was created in 2003 by the Bulgarian singer Galina Durmushliyska and producer Jaap van Beelen of Etnic Foundation, the Netherlands. They had previously worked with a female choir, but now the choir is mixed. The Dutch choir conductor Ivo Boswijk was invited to conduct the new choir. The repertoire that the ensemble presents is a real challenge. There is minimal choir literature for mixed choir in Bulgarian folklore style; songs have been written mainly for women’s choirs. The ensemble collaborates with some Bulgarian composers (Gencho Genchev, Patar Krumov, Milcho Vassilev, etc.), who composed the songs especially for the ensemble. Ivo Boswijk and Galina Durmushliyska made the arrangements for mixed choir of some authentic folk songs from different regions of Bulgaria. They also include some works that have already become classics in the folk genre.
The Godini, Godini programme presents the Bulgarian traditional ritual calendar. It begins with Christmas songs and finishes with the autumn festivities. When performed on the stage, the musicians sing and play and video images show different scenes of Bulgarian culture. The audience is thus taken on a journey through the music, nature and ancient monuments of Bulgaria. The premiere of the show was on 10 April 2005 in the Korzo Theatre in The Hague. It created great interested and was received very enthusiastically by the audience.
In order to get acquainted with the country where the songs originated, the performers visited Bulgaria. At the invitation of the Philip Koutev School for Folk Music , the ensemble presented the programme in the town of Kotel and its vicinity (May 2005). Their next Bulgarian tour was in October 2005 and was instigated by the municipality of Blagoevgrad and the Pirin Ensemble. In 2006 they took part in the New Bulgarian Music Festival in the National Palace of Culture in Sofia. After the concert they were invited by the Foundation of Intercultural Dialogue in Vidin and the surrounding area and it was in connection with this third tour that the CD album was recorded. The tours they made encouraged the ensemble to develop a new project, Kontrasti, Kontrasti, which will have its premiere in 2008.
Cubrica has achieved a tremendous amount since 2003. The ensemble has gone far beyond its humble amateur beginning, and developed its own sound. When they perform they succeed in creating the atmosphere of a real folklore festivity.

Kalinka Zgurova started singing on stage when she was only 11 years old. She gained distinction when she was 15 at the First National Singing Competition in the village of Gramatikovo, Bulgaria, in 1960. Since then she has been soloist in some of the most renowned Bulgarian folk formations: the Bulgarian National Radio Folk Dances Ensemble, Pirin Ensemble - Blagoevgrad, Zagore Ensemble - Stara Zagora. She is founder of the Zornitsa vocal Trio and has performed with it songs from different parts of Bulgaria specially arranged for the chamber trio. Kalinka Zgurova’s greatest success, however, is connected with The Mystery of Bulgarian Voices Choir.
She has recorded hundreds of songs for the Bulgarian National Radio, the Bulgarian National TV, etc. Aiming to enlarge her repertoire, she has always tried to discover authentic songs from her native Strandja region. Being very well acquainted with the original folklore, she is also very successful as a composer. The songs composed by her continue the tradition of her nameless predecessors and are easily integrated into every folk programme. A part of them have been included in this release and they can be inferred only by the information in the booklet.
Many performers of folk songs today look for ways of making folklore sound more up-to-date, but a few of them are successful. Kalinka Zgurova is very careful with regard to the “electronic” arrangements. In spite of their “modern apparel”, her songs are true to the original source.

The two brothers Dimitar and Nedko Bogdanov and the daughter of Dimitar - Ani, present their fascinating music. It is based on Bulgarian folk music expressed through the concept of the three musicians. Every song and instrumental piece is written in the spirit of the folk traditions, but the musicians have also used techniques which are typical of some other genres. They impress with their thorough knowledge of folk music and at the same time - with their incredible perception of music, marked improvisation and proficiency in mastering the voice and the instrument. Theodosii Spassov writes in the notes to the CD: “The pieces in the CD have been created and presented in very good taste, inventiveness and a feeling of humour, which characterizes every professional musician that works with creativity and constructive freedom.”
Dimitar and Nedko finished the Philip Koutev Secondary School of Music in Kotel, while Ani is still a student of music with main subject at school - folk singing. Dimitar Bogdanov played with some of the most renowned wedding orchestras in Bulgaria, and since 1998 he has been working with his brother and is soloist of the Mladi Trakiitsi orchestra. GERHARD REICHENBACH, guitar - Works for Guitar

GERHARD REICHENBACH, guitar - Works for Guitar
ID: GD336
CDs: 1
Type: CD
Kolektion: InstrumentalSubkolektion: Guitar

Guitar music compositions are not so traditional in Bulgaria, as they are in Western Europe. So it is a real event when guitar works by a Bulgarian composer are released.
Rossen Balkanski, who is the author of the music in this release, is also a performing concert guitarist. He studied the guitar under the best teachers in Bulgaria and currently, along with his activity as a performer and composer, he also teaches classical guitar at the Academy of Music in Sofia.
Besides chamber music (mainly works for guitar), he has also written incidental and film music, as well as a Concert for three guitars and chamber orchestra. Several of his compositions for solo guitar have received awards in Bulgaria. He is a member of the Union of Bulgarian Composers. His works have been published in Bulgaria and by music publishers BIM, Switzerland, and Daminus, Germany. What is characteristic of his style is that he combines elements of Bulgarian folklore with classical structure.
“It's so exciting to write music for high-class performers! I had the pleasure to do that for one of the greatest German guitar players - Gerhard Reichenbach. Balkan Sonata is dedicated to him and his unique talent for interpretation.” This short statement explains Balkanski’s choice connected with this work.
Gerhard Reichenback is well-known to all guitar connoisseurs throughout the world. Having studied under some of the great masters of the guitar, he is a virtuoso at his instrument, a musician with a brilliant sound and an active performing career. Apart from his classical guitar repertoire, he is an avid supporter and performer of contemporary music.
Raichenbach often performs works by Hans Werner Henze, Arvo Part, Rossen Balkanski, Boris Assafiev and Buck Wolters. He frequently participates in radio and TV programmes and as a jury member in major international guitar competitions and festivals. He passes on his experience to young musicians - at the “Franz Liszt” Hochschule fur Musik in Weimar, and since 2004, he has been a professor of guitar at the State Conservatory of Thessaloniki.

Recorded on 2-4th April 2006 at the Evangelische Kirche Flammersfeld, Germany

STUART- IVANOV DUO

STUART- IVANOV DUO
ID: GD340
CDs: 1
Type: CD
Subkolektion: Violin

Pianist Svetozar Ivanov has always surprised the listener with the interesting programs that he records. He definitely has an affinity for music of the 20th century and the end of the 19th century. His previous two CDs released by Gega New - Vers la flamme (GD 322) and Naked Tango (GD 327) include mainly works by Debussy, Berg, Schoenberg, Scriabin, Satie, Nazareth, Helps, Tisdall, Stravinsky, Barber. In his latest album Svetozar Ivanov concentrates again on 20th century music. Together with the violinist Carolyn Stuart they present the composer Nikolai Roslavets, who is almost unknown and very rarely performed. In the 20s of the last century, however, Roslavets was among the most famous Russian authors. He was president of the prestigious Association of Contemporary Music, a member of the first Soviet Composers’ Union, chief editor of the journal Muzykalnaya Kultura (Musical Culture), and a highly regarded composer and teacher. After Josef Stalin rose to power the Russian Association of Proletarian Musicians began its attacks on the Association of Contemporary Music, and on experimental artists. Roslavets was pronounced “decadent and formalist”, an “enemy of the people” and by the end of the decade was stripped of his prestigious positions. Many of his works were lost, stolen, or destroyed. The Duo Carolyn Stuart - Svetozar Ivanov have managed to collect some of the works that have survived. A part of them have never been released or performed before. This is a world premiere recording of some of his unpublished miniatures.
Carolyn Stuart currently serves as Associate Professor of Music at the University of South Florida and as chair and jury member for the Rutenberg International Chamber Music Festival and Competition. She has presented master classes at universities and conservatories throughout the US, Canada, and Europe. She often performs at concerts in North America and Europe. An eloquent interpreter of modern music, Ms. Stuart avidly collaborates with current composers and has been a member of the celebrated new music ensemble Quorum. Svetozar Ivanov was born in Bulgaria and graduated at the Prof. Pancho Vladigerov National Conservatory in Sofia. Mr. Ivanov holds a degree from the University of Michigan (DMA). Svetozar Ivanov is Associate Professor of Piano at University of South Florida and has often served on juries for prestigious music competitions and festivals. His gives performances at concerts as recitalist and orchestra soloist in Europe and North America.

SOFIA PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA - Stravinsky & Tabakov

SOFIA PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA - Stravinsky & Tabakov
ID: GD102
CDs: 1
Type: CD
Kolektion: Orchestral WorksSubkolektion: Orchester

Released in 1996, the CD links together two 20th-century composers - Igor Stravinsky and Emil Tabakov. Its originality is not only in the combination of Firebird and Concerto for Orchestra but also in Tabakov's interpretation as principal conductor of the Sofia Philharmonic Orchestra. And if in the Firebird ballet suite, a classical work of the 20th century, both the orchestra and the conductor have unanimously achieved the sound brilliance of the score, with all its variety of colours and sound effects, in Concerto for Orchestra the author Tabakov continues not only his own development but also the elaboration of the traditions of the Bulgarian school of composing in the symphonic genre. In its three movements expanded in time, the composition reveals a modern Bulgarian world of feelings and expressiveness in which the rhythm and the Bulgarian merry and sad songs are present. The performance is of a high class, impressing with depth and multitude of orchestra colours.

BULGARIAN FOLK DANCES

BULGARIAN FOLK DANCES

CDs: 1

Kolektion: Traditional

In the Bulgarian folk tradition instrumental music performs a specific function - to accompany the horo dances played on Sundays or at public holidays in the village square. Each region in Bulgaria has its own preferences for the specific instruments and characteristic dances. In Dobroudja, for example, the typical horo dances Opas, Sborenka, Ruka, Tropanka, etc. are accompanied on kopanka, gaida (bagpipe), and in more recent times, by three concertina-, kopanka- and bagpipe-players. In the Pirin Mountains region the heavy horo dancing used to be accompanied on tamburas, tarambukas, or zurnas (in the southernmost parts). In Thrace the favourite instrument is the kaval.
