Type: CD
Kolektion: Vocal CollectionSubkolektion: Voices and Orchestra

Recorded in the Chapel of the Porziuncola House of the Franciscan Fathers, Malta, in December 2005

Paolino Vassallo was one of the most prominent Maltese composers, the first to move away consciously from the dominating Italian influence on Maltese music. After local music studies in Malta, in 1875 he left for Paris, where he remained for 10 years and continued his studies mainly with Ernest Guiraud and Jules Massenet. On his return to Malta in 1885, he founded in Valletta his extremely successful Music Institute. His students included the most important composers of the first half of the twentieth century, among them Domenico Anastasi, Giuseppe Caruana, Carlo Diacono, etc.
Vassallo composed both sacred and non-sacred music. His three operas, where Massenet’s example is quite evident, are very popular.
A concert version of the Grande Messa was first performed in the hall of the Public Library, Valletta, in 1889. He started working on the work while still in France. The music is richly melodious, with opulent orchestration. The soloists are treated predominantly as an ensemble group rather that as individuals and the Messa is dignified, grandiose and full of religious feelings.
The present release is again a result of the cooperation between APS Bank and Gega New Music House, an initiative which led to releasing seven CDs with Maltese music of the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries.

PIRIN FOLK SONGS

PIRIN FOLK SONGS
ID: GD1727

Type: CD
Kolektion: TraditionalSubkolektion: Folk Music

The Macedonian folk songs are a phenomenon in the tradition of three Balkan states: Greece, Macedonia and Bulgaria. Despite the state boundaries, the songs from Aegean, Vardar and Pirin Macedonia go far beyond them and are sung and listened to with equal success everywhere. Doubtless is the fact that in Bulgaria they are the closest to the original, without the influence of the other folk regions. Although in the Pirin region these songs live together with more ancient and primitive models, they differ greatly from them in terms of mode and melody. And this release of Gega New features the best characteristics of the Macedonian vocal tradition: a rich rhythmic and metric palette, broad tonal volume, ornamentation and melodic line, close to the culture of the city type. Special mentioning deserves the contribution of dozens of performers for the preservation of the special vocal manner which is compulsory for these songs. That is why this CD is valuable not only for the pearls of Macedonian music included in it but also for the interpretation of the most remarkable singers and instrumentalists, known and loved far beyond the boundaries of Bulgaria.

PIETRO PAOLO BUGEJA - MESSA SOLENNE - SINFONIA

PIETRO PAOLO BUGEJA - MESSA SOLENNE - SINFONIA
ID: GR92
CDs: 1
Type: CD
Kolektion: Sacred MusicSubkolektion: Choir

This is the ninth compact disc issued as a result of the initiative of APS Bank of Malta to record a series of CDs with sacred music composed by Maltese composers (released on the Gega New label). The previous CDs presented works of the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries. This release takes us back to the 19th century and to one of Malta’s most prominent composers - Pietro Paolo Bugeja. He had initial musical studies in Malta and then went on to Naples to continue them in the Concervatorio di Saint ’Onofrio a Capuana between 1791 and 1797. It was in Naples that he wrote his first grand mass for the liturgy of St. Ivo’s Church. In 1798 he returned to Malta and was assistant to Francesco Azopardi, metrolpolitan maestro di capella at St. John’s Cathedral in Valletta. On Azopardi’s death he was selected to succeed him as maestro both of Mdina Cathedral and St. John’s Cathedral.
Bugeja was a composer, conductor and teacher. This versatile activity contributed a lot to the development of his style as a composer.
Pietro Paolo Bugeja wrote Messa solenne in 1827, mainly to be performed in the Cathedral. A very important element of the Messa solenne is its concise form. It was one of the 19th century’s best-known works. Besides it Bugeja also composed four funeral masses, 20 medium masses, 30 psalms, diverse hymns, antiphons and responses. His orchestral works include 9 sinfonie, probably written for church use, since contemporary norm required a sinfonia to precede important liturgical rites. For this purpose, Bugeja also utilized the sinfonia composed for his oratorio Gioas re di Guida - a large-scale orchestral work, written in the ‘seria’ style. According to Professor Richard Divall of the Faculty of Music, University of Melbourne, “the music of Pietro Paolo Bugeja is unjustly neglected, for the standard of his vocal and orchestral writing is very fine indeed. Stylistically Bugeja looks both back in time to the neo classicism of Gluck, with whom he has a stylistic affinity, and forward to the music of Spontini.”

The emergence and popularization of the accordion in Bulgaria dates from the beginning of the twentieth century, but by the 1930s it already became widely spread as a solo instrument, or as an instrument in small groups. There were well-known accordionists playing in instrumental groups for folk music. Today the accordion is a part of the festive celebrations in Bulgaria and there are many virtuosic players of this instrument. An accordionist of remarkable gifts who has attracted the attention of connoisseurs of instrumental folk music since 1980 is Neshko Neshev. He has won prestigious awards, among them first prize in the accordionists competition in Finland (1985) and a commendation from the World Music Institute (USA, 1999).

In 1967 the first European secondary school of folk arts was established. The idea of its founders was to prepare singers, dancers, and instrument players for the numerous folk ensembles existing in Bulgaria at that time. In the school the children learn folk instruments, vocal art, folk dances and the art of making folk instruments. Today, the former pupils of the “Philip Koutev” Folk School are among the most famous participants in the professional ensembles and respected teachers in the secondary schools of music in Bulgaria and the National Academy of Music and Dance Arts in Plovdiv. There are also many renowned soloists among them: Binka Dobreva, Elitsa Todorova, Theodosii Spassov - kaval, the gadulka players Tsvetan Tsvetkov and Dimiter Lavchev, Lyubomir Vladimirov - tambura, Ivan Varimezov - gaida, and many others. The folk choir has existed ever since the foundation of the school; the girls in the choir are selected after a competition. In its long history the choir has sung hundreds of songs from all folk regions in Bulgaria - authentic and arranged songs, or authors’ songs by outstanding composers: Philip Koutev, Anastas Naumov, Krassimir Kyurkchiisky, Stafan Kanev, Kosta Kolev, Nikolai Kaufmann … Many of the songs were composed especially for the choir. The choir has given a lot of concerts in Bulgaria, Italy, France, Denmark, Russia, Greece, Holland, the USA. Of special interest is its participation in the project of DJ Tiësto - “Tiësto in concert”in 2004 in Holland. The Folk Choir of the “Philip Koutev” National School of Folk Arts conducted by Katya Barulova has also made numerous recordings for the Bulgarian National Radio and TV programmes. The present recordings have been specially made for the album “At Daybreak”. The girls demonstrate a wonderful mastership of the style differences of various folk regions in Bulgaria and perform with great ease even the most difficult choir scores. This is a real achievement of the choir’s conductor Katya Barulova.
