Collection: Instrumental Subcollection: PianoSince the age of nine, Ivo Varbanov (b. 1972) has been living and performing mainly abroad, in Milan and London, at The Royal Academy of Music, where he specialised on a grant by the Rotary Foundation (USA). He has given concerts in many countries throughout Europe. For his Bulgarian CD the pianist has chosen various pieces of Mussorgsky, as well as his masterpiece Pictures at an Exhibition. This work not only poses to the performer various difficulties with respect to technique and interpretation, but it requires a truthful rendition of the great Russian composer's unique style, a thorough understanding of the work's rich and vivid imagery, together with an ability to construct a monumental cycle serving as points of support to the overall structure. The listener will feel the scope of Varbanov's performance who is beyond doubt a talented pianist with brilliant technique who has probed deeply in Mussorgsky's style.

Collection: Sacred Music Subcollection: ChoirThe programme is part of the series of liturgical music released by Gega New and contains performances of the Sofia Priest Choir established in 1947. The choir has been conducted by prominent Bulgarian clergymen who were masters in the details of the Orthodox singing. For this CD, dedicated to the 2000th anniversary of the birth of Jesus Christ, the choir's current conductor, Kiril Popov, musician, graduate of the Sofia Ecclesiastical Seminary, with a PhD Degree from the Moscow Ecclesiastical Seminary, has selected some famous psalms, as well as pieces by renowned composers of church chants. The richness of sound of the male voices, the hues of timbres and colours make a special impression in the tracks Praise the Lord from the Heavens, mode 5, by John Koukouzeles, a great historical figure in Bulgarian musical culture, and O Holy God, in which the singers show their mastership in the jubilant singing. The choir sings beautifully these complex compositions and the deeply emotional, elevated music. Cherubic Hymn, mode 5, Meet It Is, mode 5 by Ioan Ohridsky also deserve special attention. Among the other performances are In Thy Kingdom by Dobri Hristov, the remarkable author of Bulgarian religious music, as well as the masterpiece O God, Save Thy People by the Russian composer, Pavel Chesnokov. The last track in the CD is the traditional Bulgarian chant Grant, O Lord, Many Years - a message and greeting to all Christians.

Subcollection: LiturgyThe release contains one of the most significant compositions of Peter Dinev - a person with great services to the preservation and research of medieval Bulgarian music. As a musicologist and pedagogue, he dedicated himself to Orthodox music. For many years Dinev worked on the "translation" of the ecclesiastic characters into modern linear notation, which created opportunities for a number of liturgical works from the first centuries of Christianity in Bulgaria to be included in the repertoire. The recorded tracks are the composer's elaboration of old Orthodox chants done with mastership and inspiration. By interweaving of voices and timbres, the conductor, Stoyan Kralev has outlined the beauty of the choral songs laying the stress on the contrast between the sonority and elevation of the solo participation in prayers, rich in tenderness, humbleness and faith. With their emotionality and abundance of vocal skills and musical nuances the performances of Madrigal Chamber Choir draw the listener's attention, filling his heart with good will, kindness and love for people and God.

Collection: Sacred Music Subcollection: ChoirThe conductor has selected nine of the most popular chants for festive services dedicated to Lord Jesus Christ and his sufferings during the last three days of his earthly life. Famous composers of Russian sacred music like Kedrov, Bakhmetiev and Tchaikovsky, as well as the Bulgarian Dobri Hristov, arranged and harmonized the old church motifs, thus turning them into brilliant pieces full of compassion and glorification of Christ's sacrifice. The chants are sung in Church-Slavonic with the fluency and timbre variety characteristic of East-Orthodox music. |

Subcollection: LiturgyVarious: Glory o You, Lord (Gloire à Toi, Seigneur); (Amen for Your Soul/Amen pour l`âme)
An original CD presenting the rare opportunity to possess a recording of Armenian Liturgy. The Holy Apostolic Church of Armenia is one of the oldest churches in the Orient. The chants of three composers mainly are included in the service. Most frequently the liturgy of Ekmalian created in the last decade of the 19th century is used. The chants are beautifully harmonized for mixed choir performance, some of them with a soloist. The release includes twelve church chants, where the widely sung-out jubilation parts in expression of man's homage to God and Jesus Christ alternate with melodic-and-recitative episodes which have originated from the psalmodic singing. The programme strikes with the virtuosity of the hymns, the variety of the richly ornamented melodies, the interesting harmonic devices and the organ accompaniment. The music brings the atmosphere of peace and concentration, of contemplation and deep thought of God the Creator and the sacrifice of His Son.
