4th production by Enrico Bronzi for our Concerto Label.

Concerto is inaugurating a series of vinyls, right with this recording of Francesco Geminiani’s first 4 Sonatas for Cello and basso continuo Op. 5, a recording that was recently published in compact disc.
The record has been produced at the end of April according to the very highest standards of quality, both in terms of the lacquer density and in terms of data transfer from the original master thanks to the work of the studio, Elettroformati in Milan, one of the few companies in Europe still working on vinyl records. An original Neumann record lathe was used to this purpose under the watchful eyes of the label’s manager and sound technicians, all more than a bit excited.
For at least three generations vinyl records represented the first, unforgettable encounter with the fruition of music; for those who are younger, vinyl records belong to discotheques and the world of DJs. For some ardent fans of hi-fi music, they are still considered the vehicle of choice, unequalled for audio quality.
This album is a collectors’ item: presenting one of the finest performances by Enrico Bronzi, produced in a limited edition with each copy numbered and personally autographed by Bronzi.
The continuo part is performed by Michele Barchi, following the performance practice existing at the time, handling the figured bass line masterfully by reinventing and recreating the images and emotions of that period with exquisite polish. Barchi has been a member of well-known musical formations such as the Giardino Armonico. Together with the violinist Elisa Citterio he founded the Baroque music group Brixia Musicalis and as harpsichordist appears in concert, performing both as soloist and in chamber music groups.
This performance took place in the splendid dance hall at the Castello di San Lorenzo de Picenardi in the province of Cremona (northern Italy).
All of these aspects - the use of historic instruments, the vinyl recording, the splendid location, the autographed copies - are just intended to underline how precious Concerto believes classic music to be and not to imply it is exclusively for the elite. Particularly in this time of economic crisis, for one of the most important - yes most important - assets, which is the culture of beauty and, if you wish, the beauty of culture.

Opera text inside

This production is offering Händel's masterpiece about which a lot of excellent recordings have already been released, however Concerto is offering the true "original" opera version. This means that the roles played by Cesare, Tolomeo and Nireno which have been especially written at that time for the castrati who at best could perform those roles, are in fact beautifully performed by our well-known sopranists, as Angelo Manzotti who is interpreting the main character; Angelo Galeano, the youngest one, who plays the role of Tolomeo in an outstanding way and least but not last Angelo Bonazzoli, playing Nireno. Besides them we have the chance to listen to Alexandra Zabala, Cleopatra, who is well renowned among opera public as well as within the recording industry.
The Arias herein included are surely among Händel's most impressive ones and refer to the most affective themes as love, jealousy, glory and revenge.
The Voice Ensemble and Orchestra by Concento Ecclesiastico are conducted by M° Luca Franco Ferrari. The Opera in three Acts has been live recorded in Savona, Italy in 2006 under the direction of Alessandro Capaldi; patroness of that special event was Renata Scotto.
This Opera has then been remastered at 32 bit to enhance a pure and high quality sound which may be proved by the most sophisticated audio technologies.

Agostino Steffani produced most of his operatic works in Germany, for the most part in Munich (between 1681 and 1688) and in Hannover. In Hannover between 1689 and 1709, before he became a diplomat and before he began his ecclesiastical career, the composer from Castelfranco composed at least eight operas, for the city's new opera theater becoming the point of reference for musical life. Today, along with Alessandro Scarlatti (1660-1725), Steffani is considered one of the great creative talents of his time. He composed Alarico in 1687 in Munich.
This recording highlights for the first time one of the most important examples of baroque drama in music. Just to mention some of the most enthusiastic reviews: Opera News […] This opera is a rare treasure, Really admirable the choice to release the complete edition […] Direction and interpreters quite young and not so well-known, but of very high level both from a technical and vocal point of view, as well as for the stylistic and interpreting efforts which are surely well adjusted to the almost "impossible" baroque style by Steffani".(R. V. S. Lee) and Opera Now […] A fantastic recording, plenty of nuances with an Italian cast of voices, all of them of extraordinary high level. I really shows, once again, the superiority of the new music and vocal Italian schools above all the others; surely as far as style and interpretative mood is concerned, if not also referring to a technical point of view. We have clear examples of young artists who are very well prepared and sometimes they even reach perfection by performing various works of rare beauty […].

Giovanni Benedetto Platti was born in or near Padua on July 9th 1697 and died in Würzburg on January 11th, 1763. He was an important and major participant in the musical world of the 18th century. Fausto Torrefranca, one of the first to study Platti, says in his fundamental and monumental publication, Giovanni Benedetto Platti e la Sonata moderna, which was published posthumously by Ricordi in Milan: “How to portray Giovanni Benedetto Platti (…)? He was a true artist, this is evident, but he was also a great artist and must take his place in history among the most important authors of instrumental music. (…) As far as music for harpsichord is concerned (…) his style stands out over that of his contemporaries. To have a clear idea, just choose and read, one after another, those works in which he has been able to instil his true personality in the most concise and brilliant way and he conquers a place in the world of the indisputable, the highest sphere of art.” Giovanni Benedetto spent his whole life in Würzburg, and became known for his refined musical talent and his ability as a composer, singer, harpsichord player, violinist, oboist as well as cellist and besides all he even dedicated some of his time and talent to teaching singing.
