Church Symphonies Op.1 (Modena, Italy 1699), Arias from the opera Engelberta (Milan, 1708)

Born in Milan in 1686, Andrea Stefano Fioré, though somehow forgotten, has to be considered as a true enfant prodige concerning Italian music. While studying, among others, he was under the guidance of Arcangelo Corelli in Rome and he achieved great admiration and gained high esteem from some of his well-known contemporary artists, as J. J. Quantz (famous German flautist and composer), as well as Benedetto Marcello (Italian composer of great fame) who was mentioning about the composer's "admirable knowledge" and "huge talent".
Fioré had great influence especially at the Savoia Court (in fact the "Symphonies" which have been written by the composer at the early age of 13 years and stated as "resulting from a genious, rather than from a high-knowledged artist" have all been dedicated to sovereign Vittorio Amadeo II, Duke of Savoia and Prince of Piemont.
As it was the case at that time, Fioré has been composing, besides a corpus of sacred music dedicated to the Sabaudian Royal Chapel, also a great number of vocal Arias, among which we shall remember the opera "Engelberta" which has been performed at the Royal Ducal Theatre in Milan in 1708. Some of the most beautiful and expressive Arias of this Opera are to be found in this nice Concerto recording as a worldpremiere and performed by Angelo Manzotti with great passion and superb voice.

From the Seventeenth Century onwards Jewish cultural life has produced multifarious examples of musical practices based on non-Jewish models, such as the adoption of vocal and instrumental polyphony, but introduced at the same time into a decidedly Jewish context. These practices always have two elements in common: firstly all the pieces which have come down to us have direct reference to Jewish life; holidays, circumcisions, anniversaries, important events are celebrated by pieces of music commissioned by the Jewish communities to composers of various origin. Secondly it is clearly evident that these pieces are based on stylistic elements identical with those on which the music of the surrounding non-Jewish world is based. From which we may draw an important conclusion, namely the direct correspondence between the use of the foreign musical language and the process of adoption on the part of Jews, in those areas in which tolerance towards Jews was greatest, of the culture of the Renaissance and Baroque world. This process had its beginning in Italy itself, thanks to the work of Salomone Rossi and to Leone da Modena's theoretical approach.

The Ensemble Salomone Rossi was founded in 1991 thanks to the initiative and under the leadership of Lydia Cevidalli. The Ensemble has performed several concerts in Italy and abroad: the most important performances in recent years have been at the Concertgebouw in Bruges and at the Castle of Chimay, by invitation of the European Community for the Europalia Festival organized in 2003 for the semester of Italian European chairmanship.
In 2004 among other concerts, they have performed at the Teatro all'Antica of Sabbioneta for the Tenth edition of the Festival Lodoviciano and at the Town Musueum of Bologna for the opening of an exhibition of Emanuele Luzzatti's works. In 2005 they performed at the Università Statale di Milano and for the Montichiari Festival.
In 2006 they took part in a concert season organized at the Real Accademia de Bellas Artes of Madrid, a concert broadcast live for the Radio Clàsica programme of the Spanish National Radio.
In November 2006 they performed at the Teatro Bibiena of Mantua, on invitation by the Festival Lodoviciano for the fist Italian performance in modern times of the oratorio Ester by Giuseppe C. Lidarti, within the scope of the Mozart celebrations.
In april 2008, the Ensemble has been invited at Mountclair State University (N. J. - USA) within the Italian Festival of the Arts and Humanities.

We are herewith presenting the third CD of the complete harpsichord work (18 Sonatas in total) by Giovanni Benedetto Platti (Padua 1697 - Wuerzburg 1763). We have therefore the chance to listen from Sonata X up to Sonata XIV. For sure all Platti's work demonstrates his intention to broaden the stylistic horizon of the time, starting from a quintessential Baroque foundation and evolving to touch in edge of Classicism. Fausto Torrefranca, one of the major Italian critcs and the first one to study Platti, wrote in his fundamental and monumental publication "Giovanni Benedetto Platti e la Sonata moderna": "How to portray Giovanni Benedetto Platti […] He was a true artist, it's undoubtly, but he was also a great artist and must take his place in history among the most important authors of instrumental music. […] As far as music for harpsichord is concerned […] his style stands out over that of his contemporaries. To have a clear idea, just choose and read one after another, those works in which he had been able to instill his true personality in the most concise and brilliant way and he conquered a place in the world of the indisputable, the highest sphere of art."

For this recording of Francesco Geminiani's Sonatas op. 5 and the imaginative Baroque setting they create, we strived to ensure that the musicians' stylistically extraordinary interpretation got the acoustic quality it deserved without resorting to an excessive use of technological tricks. The result can be heard in the natural austerity of the sound thanks to the splendid dance hall at the Castello di S. Lorenzo de Picenardi (Cremona, Italy), a very special recording setting.
We wish to point out to those who particularly appreciate this music a little noticed aspect of this improvisation - guided by Enrico Bronzi's cello, which transforms the written melody into the life breath of the composer, while in the figured bass of the harpsichord Michele Barchi recreates and rebuilds the images and emotions of that period with exquisite polish. This magnificent performance inspired us to create an audio recording that gives the public the flavour of a journey back in time.
