Collection: Baroque Subcollection: Harpsichord John Kitchen (1755 Kirkman Harpsichord from the Raymond Russell Collection)
Handel’s overtures had an independent life almost from their inception, and the practice of performing them on keyboard instruments has a similarly long pedigree, beginning with a number of transcriptions made by the composer himself. Keyboard specialist John Kitchen virtuosically evokes Handel’s orchestral palette in the welter of timbres and colours which he summons forth from Jacob Kirckman’s 1755 harpsichord, a classic instrument from the very apex of the English harpsichord-building tradition.

Subcollection: Harpsichord St Cecilia’s Hall is the oldest purpose-built concert hall in Scotland, dating from 1763. In 1968 it became home to the Raymond Russell Collection of Early Keyboard Instruments. This already world famous collection was further enhanced in 2005 when the University of Edinburgh received the extraordinary gift of 22 historic keyboard instruments from Rodger and Lynne Mirrey; the galleries at St Cecilia’s Hall now house one of the two most comprehensive collections of early keyboard instruments in the world. John Kitchen’s demonstration recital couples music with instrument in a way that informs and entertains.

Collection: Baroque Subcollection: Oboe Soloist Oleg Yakubovich, oboe (Russia) and the Kostroma Chamber Orchestra conducted by Pavel Gershtein (Russia) are remarkably professional, master the Baroque style, and their ensemble is perfectly structured. The oboe is amazingly light, virtuosic, there is a feeling that there are no problems for the performer, everything is very natural, absolutely playful, all improvisational moments are appropriate and coordinated between the soloist and the orchestra. The first violin and the cymbal are also very good, which thoroughly supports the entire musical structure. |
