Live recording in the Hall of Columns of the Unions House, Moscow, October 20, 1954
Maria Veniaminovna Yudina (1899 - 1970) was a Soviet pianist. Yudina's playing was marked by great virtuosity, spirituality, strength and intellectual rigor, with a highly idiosyncratic style and tone. She was an extensively performing performer who performed mainly in recitals or in a chamber ensemble. Her interests included, first of all, the latest Russian and world music: Yudina was the first performer in the USSR of a number of works by A. Berg, P. Hindemith, E. Kshenek, B. Bartok, A. Webern, O. Messiaen, and others.
Maria Yudina was one of the non-conforming artists. Her performance style, as well as her overall philosophical and aesthetical views on the nature of creativity, were very often at loggerheads with the established norms, which provoked a strong reaction in academic musical circles, causing a rejection of her art. Unlike many of her contemporaries, Yudina was critical of the 'romantic' treatment of the piano. The music of Bach, which she admired all her life, has a special place in her legacy. Yudina's immediately recognisable hand (the extremely prominent articulation, the expressiveness of narration, the fervent grandeur of her musical 'speech') gives the preludes and fugues a subjectively powerful character, where the asceticism and meaningfulness of thought combine to form an integral artistic whole.

Youri Boutsko is an outstanding Russian composer yet little known in the West, a representative of the generation of Soviet authors whose creative developmenttook place in the 1960s. He belongs to the same brilliant assemblage as Arvo Pärt, Edison Denisov, Valentin Silvestrov, Alfred Schnittke, Sofia Gubaidulina, Giya Kancheli - artists who influenced the development of the spiritual and intellectual trend in music in the second half of the twentieth century.
Youri Boutsko's piano cycle "From the Diary" consists of four fascicules, each reflecting the composer's deeply personal and spiritual experiences. It combines philosophical reflections, inner emotions, and the search for a new musical language that organically incorporates the traditions of Russian culture. The recording of this cycle offers to the audiencean opportunity to connect with one of the significant works of contemporary Russian piano music.
Yuri Butsko - From the Diary. Performed by Alexei Chernov
The piano cycle From the Diary by Yuri Butsko is a rare and deeply personal masterpiece of Russian music from the late 20th and early 21st centuries. Spanning four notebooks written over nearly two decades, it traces an inner journey through memory, faith, and philosophical reflection.
Alexei Chernov, a close friend of the composer and one of his most dedicated interpreters, offers the world premiere recording of the complete cycle. His performance is not only a tribute to Butsko’s spiritual and artistic legacy, but also a profound personal statement - the result of study, friendship, and artistic affinity.
With expressive clarity, architectural depth, and emotional honesty, Chernov brings to life this intimate musical diary, illuminating its poetic imagery, chant-based structures, and timeless philosophical tone. His interpretation invites listeners into a unique sound world where silence, melody, and memory become one. |

The Slavonic Dances are a series of 16 orchestral pieces composed by Antonín Dvořák in 1878 and 1886 and published in two sets as Opus 46 and Opus 72 respectively. Originally written for piano four hands, the Slavonic Dances were inspired by Johannes Brahms's own Hungarian Dances and were orchestrated at the request of Dvořák's publisher soon after composition. The pieces, lively and overtly nationalistic, were well received at the time and today are among the composer's most memorable works, occasionally making appearances in popular culture.

A Cycle of Symphonic Poems (Vyšehrad; Vltava; / From Bohemia's Woods and Fields; Tábor; Blaník)
My Country, the monumental cycle of symphonic poems by Bedřich Smetana, is a unique apotheosis of the composer’s love for his motherland. Smetana himself wrote a brief outline of the contents of the cycle’s individual parts. The work, which he dedicated to the city of Prague, was first performed on November 5, 1882. It’s import, most notably in the darkest times for the Czech nation, was perhaps most eloquently expressed in 1939 by the author, Jan Drda: “It is not a poem, it’s a prophecy. A spiritual vision of the beautiful land which has accompanied generation after generation, a message of hope and love harking back to the past and pointing to the future… A land from whose people have arisen such truly prophetic figures as was recently Bedřich Smetana, is indeed invincible.”
