RAMEAU, Jean-Philippe - Les compositeurs

   Les titres retrouvé: 15

Compositeur: RAMEAU, Jean-Philippe ((1683-1764))
RAMEAU, Jean-Philippe Son musique:
Numerous harpsichord pieces and many operas, including Hippolyte et Aricie, Castor et Pollux, Le Temple de la gloire, Les Paladins, and Les Indes galants.

Son vie:
His birth date is unknown, but he was baptized 25 September 1683.
Rameau began his musical career as an organist, but for a long time was best known as a theorist. His Treatise on Harmony was one of the most infulential works of the 18th century.
Rameau didn't begin composing operas until he was into his fifties. Hippolyte et Aricie was his first attempt, and though it later became very successful, the Parisians (who were naturally suspicious of music written by a theorist rather than a practical composer) found the music far to wild and violent for their tastes. It was toned down to accomodate them.
He became very sucessful as an operatic composer, and was an important player in the so-called War of the Buffonists which sprang up in Paris after a performance of Pergolesi's La Serva Padrona. The conflict dropped off after the successful perfomance of an Italian opera which was actually written by a Frenchman.
Rameau's output is small if measured in total number of works, but when one considers that he didn't begin a serious career in composition until his life was more than half over, the amount of actual music is astounding.

John Kitchen harpsichord (1769 Taskin Harpsichord)

John Kitchen - uniquely familiar with Edinburgh's internationally acclaimed collections of early keyboard instruments - turns his attention to the world's most famous harpsichord, the Taskin harpsichord. The reign of Louis XV was the period during which the harpsichord gained its greatest popularity in France, and this glorious 1769 instrument by Pascal Taskin would have been the preferred choice of any composer. Here its opulent lushness is captured in the ideal acoustics of Scotland's oldest concert hall St Cecilia's Hall. The Hall is also home to the Raymond Russell Collection of Early Keyboard Instruments, which houses the Taskin harpsichord. The combination of instrument, venue, programme and performer creates a unique listening experience.

This is John Kitchen's fourteenth solo recording on Delphian. Since his appointment in 2002 as Edinburgh City Organist, he has curated a busy series of concerts in the city's iconic Usher Hall. Recent recital series in the USA and Germany complement his busy programme of activities in the UK. Having studied seventeenth century French harpsichord music whilst Organ Scholar at Clare College, Cambridge, John is now Senior Lecturer at Edinburgh University, Conductor of Edinburgh University Singers, and Director of Music of Old Saint Paul's Episcopal Church in Edinburgh.

Svetozar Ivanov has a successful international career as a pianist. He has made numerous appearances as recitalist and orchestra soloist in Europe and North America. Recent venues include Festival “Peter the Great” in the Netherlands, Robert Helps International Festival at Merkin Concert Hall in New York City, Fox River Chamber Music Festival in Wisconsin, Chautauqua Music Festival in New York, Sequoia Concerts in San Francisco, The Steinway Series and the Encore Series in Florida and numerous concert series at universities throughout the USA. He is a piano professor at University of South Florida and serves on the Artist Faculty at Green Mountain Chamber Music Festival in Vermont and as Artistic Director of the Steinway Piano Series in Florida. Svetozar Ivanov was born in Bulgaria and is a graduate of the Pancho Vladigerov Bulgarian National Conservatory. He holds the Doctor of Musical Arts degree from University of Michigan. The first CD of the pianist released by Gega New includes works by Debussy, Berg, Schoenberg and Scriabin (GD 322). The second CD features pieces which present the development of music art within a period of four centuries. Svetozar Ivanov says about the present program: “In 1914 Erik Satie composed Perpetual Tango which was meant to be repeated eternally. Seventy years later John Cage wrote a piece with the same title, shape and structure as Satie's tango. Separately and superimposed, these two works encircle this CD endlessly. The title, Naked Tango is borrowed from a stunning work (reproduced on the cover) by Argentine artist Guillermo Kuitca. I was very fortunate to know Robert Helps during the last few years of his life and he remains a great inspiration for me as a person and as a musician. His music, which is the heart of this CD, along with timeless sounds from the distant past (Tisdall, Rameau) is woven into the perpetual rhythm of the tango as expressed by Nazareth, Stravinsky, Shchedrin and Barber.”

The Masonic movement is considered to have originated in the beginning of the 18th century. For this reason, the present release covers three centuries. The composers included are not only among the greatest musicians, but they are also renowned members of Masonic lodges. For example, Haydn and Mozart were members of "Zur wahren Eintracht" (True Harmony), and List was a member of "Zur Einigkeit" (Unity). The performers Ventseslav Nikolov and Ruzhka Tcharaktchieva are among the most distinguished Bulgarian musicians and laureates of prestigious international competitions. Currently they are respected members of the adjudicators’ committees of these competitions. Still giving concerts and making recordings of works from different epochs, they pass their experience to their students at the Prof. Pancho Vladigerov Academy of Music. The programme with music by Masonic composers is a clear example of their excellent performing skill and interpretation of styles !
