Svetozar Ivanov presents an interesting program with music from the beginning of the 20th century - works by the French impressionist Debussy, the Austrian composers Berg and Schoenberg and the Russian mystic Scriabin. The compilation of works is a real challenge for every performer, and the pianist fulfils his task in the most brilliant way.
Svetozar Ivanov was born in Bulgaria. He is a graduate of the Bulgarian National Conservatory and holds the Doctor of Musical Arts degree from University of Michigan. Currently Svetozar Ivanov is a piano professor at University of South Florida and serves on the Artist Faculty at Green Mountain Chamber Music Festival in Vermont and as Artistic Director of the Steinway Piano Series in Florida. He has served as a Jury member at the Konzerteum International Piano Competition in Greece, the Seiler International Piano Competitions in Crete, and the International Youth Music Festival and Competition in Bulgaria. He has made numerous appearances as recitalist and orchestra soloist in Europe and North America. Recent venues include the Festival Peter the Great in the Netherlands, Robert Helps International Festival at Merkin Concert Hall in New York City, Fox River Chamber Music Festival in Wisconsin, Chautauqua Music Festival in New York, Sequoia Concerts in San Francisco, The Steinway Series and the Encore Series in Florida and numerous concert series at universities throughout the USA.

Firma Melodiya presents another album dedicated to one of the greatest violinists of the 20th century, Leonid Kogan.

An unusual pairing of recordings realized in the late 1960s and early 1970s makes this release particularly attractive. Two concertos by J S Bach, a composer whose music played a significant part in the violinist’s repertoire (the concerto for two violins and orchestra was recorded together with Pavel Kogan, Leonid’s son and a talented violinist ad conductor), are here along with a piece from a different era.

The violin concerto by Alban Berg, a representative of the Second Viennese School, is one of the best creations of the composer of Wozzeck. The concerto, which became the composer’s last work, was dedicated “To the memory of an angel” (Alma Mahler’s daughter who died at an early age), combined the expression of the musical language with poignant lyrical parts and ended in the sounds of Bach’s chorale.

Leonid Kogan was the only performer of Berg’s concerto in the former USSR. The complexity of the piece was an obstacle for many celebrated violinists. His interpretation still captivates with its emotional expressiveness and in-depth comprehension of the concept and form of the concerto.

Firma Melodiya presents a record of chamber music by Carl Maria von Weber, Robert Schumann, Johannes Brahms and Alban Berg performed by leading Russian musicians of the 1980s. Anatoly Kamyshev received the second award at the 1979 Soviet national contest of winders; he was a soloist of leading Moscow orchestras, performed with solo and ensemble programs, including a number of concerts with Sviatoslav Richter at the December Nights festival. After Andrei Gavrilov's convincing victory at the International Tchaikovsky Competition (1974, first award) he became world famous. Celloist Ivan Monighetti was one of the best disciples of Mstislav Rostropovich (at the same 1974 International Tchaikovsky Competition he received the second award). A renowned master of contemporary music performance, he is also known for his interpretations of Baroque and Classicism works; romantic music was also abundant in his programs.

For the 100th anniversary of Sviatoslav Richter, Firma Melodiya presents its
arguably biggest project in its semicentennial history.
The name of Sviatoslav Richter is inscribed in gold in the history of music.
He was not just “more than a pianist,” he was even more than a musician. An owner
of composing, conducting, artistic, directing and acting gifts, a connoisseur of literature,
arts and philosophy, with a will of iron he made all his gifts serve the art of
pianism. An “artist of planetary scale,” as of the critics put it, Richter was like that in
everything - in his unbounded repertoire that he never stopped replenishing until
his last years, in his priestly frenzy of hours-long rehearsals, in the geography and
number of performances, - over 3 500 concerts in 770 places of the world for 55
years of his musical career! (“He was somewhat fathomless, Richter,” said one of his
famous colleagues). However, after he conquered the world (almost literally), he remained
indifferent to ovation and eulogies of the press, painfully experienced each
of the “defects” he noticed in his performance, and at the end of his way confessed
before the journalist Bruno Monsaingeon: “I don’t like myself.”
Of course we inherited numerous recordings from Sviatoslav Richter, live
and studio ones (although he preferred the former to the latter). Hundreds of records
and CDs have been released on domestic and foreign labels (the first of them,
gramophone ones, appeared in the 1940’s while some others became available as
late as in this century). However, even the existing body of recordings captures
neither his complete repertoire nor the entire essence of Richter’s
pieces could sound differently over the years, or even over a day!
And now, Firma Melodiya that recently marked its 50th birthday makes a
unique present for both sophisticated experts and a broad circle of music lovers -
a 50-CD set of Sviatoslav Richter’s concert recordings!
It has to be understood that this collection is far from the complete phonographic
legacy of the great musician. Nevertheless, the set includes plenty of
exclusive, previously unreleased recordings that will make the hearts of even
most erudite connoisseurs and collectors rejoice.
Most of the featured recordings are broadcasts from the concerts played in
Moscow in 1962 to 1983. However, the exceptions are of special interest. These are:
• one of the first Sviatoslav Richter’s extant concert programmes -
Schubert’s last sonata and Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition (1949);
• recording of the concert with Nina Dorliak in Bucharest, in 1958;
• recordings of “home” rehearsals with Nina Dorliak.
Alexander Scriabin’s Prometheus, on which he plays a “modest” piano
part in an orchestra, is evidence of Richter’s extremely broad musical interests, or
the recordings of J.S. Bach’s ensemble concertos together with students of the
Moscow Conservatory.
Perhaps the listeners will find a number of “repetitive” tracks surprising.
Richter played (and recorded) many works time and again. Some of them allow us
to track the evolution of the pianist’s art, testify to his constant creative search
and dissatisfaction with himself (the interpretations of Berg’s concertos with different
performers, different versions of Schubert’s Sonata No. 6, Beethoven’s Third
Concerto and Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition at an interval of ten and twenty
years, respectively). Some other recordings were played in a shorter stretch of
time (Beethoven’s Sonata No. 1, Prokofiev’s Sonata No. 2), or in succession - from
the mid 1970’s. Considering the growing interest of the public, Richter frequently,
fully or partly, repeated his programmes. So, at an interval of one day he played
Mozart’s Concerto No. 18 and Rachmaninoff’s Etudes-tableaux. In those unique
phonographic documents, a keen ear will detect barely perceptible “atmospheric”
changes that captured an inner aura of a certain concert as each of them was a new
test for the pianist in terms uncompromising strictness to himself, a new step on
the way to Absolute Music.

Firma Melodiya presents a recording of chamber works by Alban Berg and Olivier Messiaen.

Four Pieces for Clarinet and Piano (1913) were created by Alban Berg, one of the pupils of Arnold Schoenberg, the founder of the Second Viennese School, in a period of an intense creative ascent, a year before he began to work on his opera Wozzeck.

Olivier Messiaen’s Quartet for the End of Time is arguably one of the most amazing pages of chamber music of the 20th century. It was composed during the composer’s stay in German prisoner-of-war camp where it was premiered in January of 1941. The epigraph to the entire work was inspired by text from the Book of Revelation:

“And I saw another mighty angel come down from heaven, clothed with a cloud: and a rainbow was upon his head, and his face was as it were the sun, and his feet as pillars of fire ... and he set his right foot upon the sea, and his left foot on the earth .... And the angel which I saw stand upon the sea and upon the earth lifted up his hand to heaven, and sware by him that liveth for ever and ever ... that there should be time no longer: But in the days of the voice of the seventh angel, when he shall begin to sound, the mystery of God should be finished.”

The works were first performed in the former USSR for the first time in 1998 at the Gift to the Vine music festival in the Georgian city of Telavi. The festival was initiated by two outstanding Soviet musicians - cellist Natalia Gutman and violinist Oleg Kagan. The composer and pianist Vasily Lobanov and Swiss clarinetist, then a member of the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, Eduard Brunner, both recognized interpreters of contemporary music, were among the participants of the festival. A year later, the Quartet for the End of Time was performed by the same line-up in Moscow at Sviatoslav Richter’s December Evenings festival at the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts.

The featured recording was made at one of the last performances of Oleg Kagan who passed away prematurely in 1990.
