Dufourt’s works typically appear to be something like the slow differentiation of an overarching “structural sound” (Lachenmann), like a “texture which tears apart and grows back together again, albeit with a unified note that prevents the work from disintegrating.” Here, harmonic objects are endlessly weighed, turned over, put under a magnifying glass, stretched, distorted slightly, filtered and rubbed to dust via instrumentation, with the fine line between chord and timbre drifting this way and that.
