In 1849, the translator, poet and playwright Lev Mey (1822-1862) wrote a drama The Tsar’s Bride based on one of the passages from the era of Ivan the Terrible’s reign. In 1868, Mily Balakirev drew Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov’s attention to Mey’s work. However, the composer set to creating an opera based on the plot of The Tsar’s Bride only thirty years later. He began his work in February 1898 and completed it in ten months. Almost without changing Mey’s plot, Rimsky-Korsakov enhanced the dramatic qualities of The Tsar’s Bride with his musical means. The opera was premiered in the autumn of 1899 at a Moscow theatre of the industrialist and patron Savva Mamontov with Mikhail Ippolitov-Ivanov being the conductor. The Tsar’s Bride, a sample of realistic drama, is one of the most popular works for musical theatre at the present time. The performance of 1973 presented on these CDs brought together great artists of Russian stage - Evgeny Nesterenko, Galina Vishnevskaya, Vladimir Atlantov, Irina Arkhipova and others.

Tchaikovsky - Eugene Onegin - Opera in Three Acts

Tchaikovsky - Eugene Onegin - Opera in Three Acts

Type: CD

This 1955 performance features some of the leading artists of the operatic stage; Galina Vishnevskaya as Tatyana, Sergey Lemeshev as Lensky and Yevgeny Belov as Onegin. Lemeshev’s deeply heartfelt performances in this role were particularly critically acclaimed.

Firma Melodiya presents one of the most famous and loved work of the greatest Russian composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky - the opera Eugene Onegin. This 1955 staging featured some of the leading artists of the operatic stage - Galina Vishnevskaya as Tatyana, Sergey Lemeshev as Lensky, Yevgeny Belov as Onegin, Ivan Petrov as Prince Gremlin, and also the soloists, choir and orchestra of the USSR Bolshoi Theatre conducted by Boris Khaikin. The composer turned to the story of Alexander Pushkin’s novel in verse of the same name in 1877, and it took him less than a year to compose the opera. Tchaikovsky somehow reconsidered the plot of the novel focusing on its lyrical component, its heroine Tatyana, and her love for Onegin. Tatyana confesses her feelings to Onegin, but he discards her. After awhile, he sees her in a ballroom and realizes he is in love with her, but it is too late - she is already another man’ wife and won’t be unfaithful to her spouse. Tatyana performed by Galina Vishnevskaya is a fine example of acting and richness of vocal palette. Also, the critics have repeatedly noted the genial performance of Sergey Lemeshev as Lensky. His deeply heartfelt performance makes the character of a lyrical poet so real, touching and at times tragic.

Galina Vishnevskaya (Tatyana), Yevgeniy Belov (Onegin), Sergey Lemeshev (Lensky), Larissa Avdeyeva (Olga), Valentina Petrova (Larina), Eugenia Verbitskaya (Filipyevna), Ivan Petrov (Gremin), Andrei Sokolov (Triquet), Igor Mikhailov (Zaretsky)

Soloists of the Bolshoi Theatre / Choir and Orchestra of the Bolshoi Theatre, Boris Khaikin

D. SHOSTAKOVICH - All Symphonies - Symphonies Nos. 1-15 (complete)

D. SHOSTAKOVICH - All Symphonies - Symphonies Nos. 1-15 (complete)
ID: MELCD1002431
CDs: 10
Type: CD
Collection: Symphony
Subcollection: Voices and Orchestra

Dmitri Shostakovich’s creations constitute a musical chronicle of the epoch. What we hear in his music is something that continues to alarm minds and souls of millions of people. His fifteen symphonies captured not only the great musician’s evolution - as if the entire 20th century with its great discoveries and perturbations, unprecedented progress and terrifying catastrophes breathes in their scores. These are unique documents of human spirit that will stay with us for good to tell us about their time, to stir heated theoretical and aesthetic disputes, to give us a reason for very different interpretations, and to command our admiration or sharp rejection. Whatever the case may be, they will never find an indifferent listener.
Firma Melodiya is preparing a number of large-scale projects for the Shostakovich anniversary year. We present the first of them - a set of the composer’s symphonies performed by the greatest masters of the Soviet conducting school and brightest interpreters of Shostakovich’s music - Evgeny Mravinsky, Kirill Kondrashin, Evgeny Svetlanov and Gennady Rozhdestvensky. The set also includes recordings made by Konstantin Ivanov, a predecessor of Evgeny Svetlanov as chief conductor of the country’s principal orchestra - the USSR State Academic Symphony Orchestra; Yuri Temirkanov, a successor of Evgeny Mravinsky, a great representative of the St. Petersburg conducting school; Rudolf Barshai, a founder of the first Soviet chamber orchestra and the one who inspired Shostakovich’s Fourteenth Symphony; and Maxim Shostakovich, the composer’s son who presented the world premiere of the last, Fifteenth Symphony.
The live and studio recordings of Shostakovich’s symphonies were made by Firma Melodiya from 1961 to 1984. The studio recording is peculiar for the fact it was realized shortly after the world premiere in the presence and under supervision of the composer. An unconfirmed legend among the former members of the Moscow Radio Symphony Orchestra has it that the recording was to be erased together with the other ones after Maxim Shostakovich defected from the Soviet Union. However, it survived among the Melodiya phonograms.
The edition comprises a lidded hard box made from lined cardboard, 9 digipacks and a thick hardcover booklet in English and Russian.

Firma Melodiya presents the first complete CD release of the Anthology of Russian Symphonic Music, the most massive project in the world’s history of sound recording!
Evgeny Svetlanov… It is needless to remind what a mark the great musician left in Russian, and even broader, world performing arts. The outstanding pianist and talented composer, he became a legendary conductor who helmed Russia’s main orchestra, the storied Svetlanov’s State Academic Symphony Orchestra, for 35 years. From his early youth upwards Svetlanov was possessed by the idea of rescuing from obscurity little known and forgotten pages of Russian music; his aspiration gradually grew into the idea of the Anthology. He worked on it for about 30 years, and it still appears to be a true heroic feat.
Glinka, Dargomyzhsky, Balakirev, Mussorgsky, Borodin, Rimsky-Korsakov, Tchaikovsky, Lyadov, Taneyev, Arensky, Kalinnikov, Lyapunov, Medtner - all orchestral works by the Russian composers of the 19th and early 20th centuries were captured on tape by Evgeny Svetlanov and his orchestra.
The first part of the Anthology comprises 55 CDs with works presented in chronological order from Glinka to Lyapunov. The bonus CD includes recordings of Nikolai Medtner’s piano works performed by Svetlanov the pianist. He had a special fondness for the outstanding composer’s music and in many ways contributed to the return of his music into the context of contemporary performing culture.
