On August 1st 2015 it will be 70 years ago that the Marine Band of the
Royal Netherlands Navy (Marinierskapel der Koninklijke Marine) was established. The originally informal 18th century ship’s bands developed through the years via the formal Regimental Band of the Royal Netherlands Navy (1874-1940) into an internationally leading military band.

This platinum jubilee coincides with the 350th anniversary of the Marine Corps (1665-2015), an organisation belonging to the oldest branch of military service of the Netherlands: the Royal Netherlands Navy established in 1488.

As early as the 17th century in the days of Fleet Admiral Michiel de Ruyter one of the initiators of the Marine Corps, music has played a role in the navy. Besides using it to pass through commands, signals and for recruiting ships’ crews, it was ideal for moving groups of people (soldiers) to the cadence of musical genres with a duple time sense of rhythm: the military march was born. Marching was made more pleasant by an often cheerful and recognizable melody, improving morale and at the same time giving the column an impressive appearance through the uniform movements.

This military marching music also developed into marches destined for entirely different purposes, like commemorations, celebrations or for amusement. According to the occasion, the tempo and key were adapted: from slow to (very) quick, cheerful or of quite a plain nature. Examples of this are, among others, the funeral marches, procession marches, inauguration marches and dance and circus music. At the same time a genre emerged that could be performed on stage, the concert march, giving the traditionally non-marching symphony orchestra occasion to programme this music. A few of these pieces of music, well-known and loved by the public in general are; the Radetzky March by Strauss, the Pomp and Circumstance Marches by Elgar, the Stars and Stripes Forever by Sousa and the Florentiner March by Fučík.

Paganini’s 24 Caprices, a mile hill for any violin virtuoso. Paganini composed these solo works to play exclusively in his concerts, all of which profoundly influenced the evolution of violin technique. Generally speaking, Paganini’s compositions were technically imaginative, and the timbre of the instrument was greatly expanded as a result of these works. Sounds of different musical instruments and animals were often imitated. Like Caprice no.9 (Hunting) or no. 13 also known as “Devil’s Laugh”. Paganini was in possession of a number of fine string instruments. More legendary than these were the circumstances under which he obtained (and lost) some of them. While Paganini was still a teenager in Livorno, a wealthy businessman named Livron lent him a violin, made by the master luthier Giuseppe Guarneri, for a concert. Livron was so impressed with Paganini’s playing that he refused to take it back. This particular violin came to be known as Il Cannone Guarnerius. On a later occasion in Parma, he won another valuable violin (also by Guarneri) after a difficult sight-reading challenge from a man named Pasini. Playing and recording the 24 Caprices by Niccolo Paganini on my Stradivarius 1729 brings to this recording the original atmosphere that Paganini created in his concerts while playing these amazing extreme virtuoso works. About Razvan Stoica “Discerning charm and ravishing timbre, breathtaking technical bravura, sparkling intonation...”...he will become one of the greatest violinists of his generation.” “Meunsteriche Zeitung” Born in Romania, in June 1986, in a family of famous musicians of an undeniable quality and prestige, Razvan Friedmann Stoica enlightens the latest years with his virtuosity and passion, with his outstanding performances and presence on the well-known international stages! His charismatic performances have drawn the attention of both the press and the public. Having mastered his instrument at a young age, Razvan was admitted to the Enesco Conservatory in Bucharest in Maestro Modest Iftinchi's class. After graduating, Razvan continued his studies at the Royal Conservatory in Amsterdam, studying under Ilya Grubert. His talent and passionate interpretation brought him out into the light of the classical music world stage as being the real, well-known, appreciated, best new talent of 2013 as rewarded in Slovakia at the EURORADIO New Talent Competition in October 2013. Razvan Friedmann Stoica plays on an Antonius Stradivarius 1729 violin loaned to him by an anonymous donor from Salzburg and a violin bow of Max Moller, Amsterdam, courtesy of Montferland Cultuur Fonds. The suave delightful tone, the heavenly sound and the charismatic performance of the young violonist made the prestigious critics stand up for his presence in concerts and acclaim him to be: the greatest violonist of his generation!

Sven van de Voorde - Messiaen - Quatuor Pour La Fin Du Temps

Debut album by Sven Van De Voorde and ensemble TetraGonist expected Soon!
Presentation Concert March 16 Conservatory Ghent.
January 15th 1941: The premiere of Messiaen’s most performed work ‘Quatuor pour la fin du Temps’ in the theatre shed of Stelag
VIIa, a German work camp near the Polish border.

This work, which consists of 8 parts, centralizes the Apocalypse as it is portrayed in the Gospel of John. The musical language is essentially ‘immatériel, spirituel et catholique’. Messiaen dubbed himself a ‘compositeur- rythmicien’ and, alongside his preoccupation with harmonic development reflected in his wayward use of several modes, he was mainly concerned about the auditor’s listening experience. This concern was expressed , on the one hand, through added values and rhythmical palindromes, and on the other, through his often extremely low paces, always aiming to express the Christian mystical experience that results in eternity.

The ‘Quator pour la fin du Timps’ by O. Messiaen with its unique formation, is the central work around which the young TetraGonist Ensemble has taken shape…Which music, however, could function alongside this masterpiece
and maybe even shed a new light on it?
